How To Recruit Affiliates and What Attracts Them To Promote For You?

I've always been amazed at how top guns (i.e. Ewen Chia) have been able to recruit so many affiliates, train them and seriously, get them out there promoting like crazy for them all the time! Mass control, 100% commissions... whatever. I've tried different models and yielded different results.

Now, here's my question: how do you recruit your affiliates and what do you think attracts affiliates to promote a product?

Thanks to everyone who's contributing!

If you're interested in recruiting affiliates, you should raise their interest with something. Try offering them a percentage of your earnings. That, I believe should work. I'm curious, what other methods have you tried? Since you opted for different models, I have no idea what you have tried, so if you can, develop on that.

I promote only products that have banners available....and banners must be good looking ...the kind of look that will guarantee clicks

It's not just getting affiliates it's getting affiliates that can actually generate some sales.

The main way I have found affiliates is by promoting my products myself and getting them to convert well.

Obviously you want to make affiliate aware that you have a new product but ONLY after you have done testing and are sure that the conversion rate is good enough and then you will find that affiliates jump on board fast.

You know what is the best thing for getting affiliates to promote?

    1. An offer that converts extremely well.

    2. A product that is really freakin' good.

After that, the better the "offer" the more affiliates will jump. Higher commissions, instant commissions, etc.

I know some people in this thread said offering premade banners/emails/ad's, etc. helps, and I agree it does - but it isn't the winning formula.

    The winning formula is this:

    1. A high converting product.
    2. A product that is super high value.

If you can offer 100% commission PLUS instant to paypal payments - and the product converts really well - and it just rocks as a product - affiliates will come to you to promote.

I've seen it time and again with my business and with others. My last WSO I had affiliates promoting without me even getting the program SET UP! I had to quickly do fire control as the whole thing was about to flop on itself - but after an hour of fixing it, I gained another 40 customers I didn't have before and made a lot more money.

Then I was immediately approached by 3 other people and my list is begging me to allow them to promote it.

What did I do? Nothing but put a good product that converted really well.

    Rob

EDIT: Another reason why you need to be in the IM niche - you get affiliates super easy and can get them to promote your niche products too.

This is a very good question. I like to give loads of aff tools and try to communicate with my affiliates.

If you don't have a personal relationship with the JV - it's all about the EPC.

They want to know 2 things

    1) That you've tested your offer and know your numbers
    2) They are going to make money for mailing

(Naturally this assumes your product is good and you are respected in the industry)

You have to bear in mind that (oversimplification coming up here!) there are, broadly speaking, two very, very different kinds of affiliate available to vendors on Clickbank (and elsewhere, too, I think): there are the 90% of affiliates who collectively produce 10% of the affiliate-referred sales (they typically like banners and affiliate toys and gimmicks more than they care about the product and the sales page!), and then there are the other 10% of affiliates, the serious, professional ones, who collectively produce 90% of the affiliate-referred sales.

Many inexperienced vendors, in my opinion, make the huge but entirely understandable mistake of trying to attract "as many affiliates as possible", which means that they inevitably construct their affiliate-attracting process (whatever it entails) by targeting the first of these two groups. That, specifically, is likely to be the outcome for those who canvas affiliate opinion and try to please the majority. The majority of affiliates doesn't relate at all to the majority of sales. Those who target the second group are likely to be far more successful.

In this post, I've set out my own criteria for "an attractive product", from the Clickbank affiliate's perspective. (Most of it applies outside Clickbank, too - that's just the "example").

I can't speak confidently for others, but I think that the criteria listed there are pretty attractive, overall, to the second group.

    Patricia,

I went through the same things as you.

I have a product (Ebook) that converts really well and I put it up on Clickbank. I usually have anywhere between 80 and 100 affiliates promoting it at any given time.

But, only a small handful of them were making sales. I soon realized that I needed to change my approach based on my results and also the helpful posts from experienced affiliates such as Alexa.

I think those that are trying to make it as "easy as possible" for anyone to promote their product are not taking the right approach. The ones who really know their **** and know how to get highly targeted traffic to my product are probably not going to care about all the typical affiliate tools. And, I've noticed that mainly lazy affiliates who want to "give it a shot" are the ones who use those tools resulting in mainly... no sales.

I'm currently developing another product and I'd like to build up a buyer's list for it so I plan on offering a 100% commission with Instant Paypal Payments to a select group.

I think it's important that you be experienced and know your business really well, and have a few products before you approach the Super-Affiliates.

I feel I'm at that stage so I'm going to proceed with this new approach.

Someone mentioned that having a high converting product is VERY important. Well, my product converts good with MY traffic... but will it convert for YOUR traffic??

This is a question I'm very interested in when searching for potentially successful affiliates and something I would expect them to answer before we proceed with a partnership.

Anyway, my two cents. Good luck.
