I've never used wordpress... No budget..

Alright... I need to ask the forum if there is anyway to get wordpress on a free host of any kind with an existing domain I have. If there is, I'd like to know. I've never used it but I'm wanting to dabble with it. I have no money to spend on hosting.. gas and food are kind of above hosting. Right now I just do blogger and I feel trapped in a box.. It works, just not well for me.

To be honest, I don't know of any free host that can host wordpress. Hosting can be as little as $5 a month so you really need to find the money wherever you can if you want to be successful online. I suggest monetising your free blogs to produce the money required for hosting and go from there.

Wordpress is an open source software as it is and to get it for free is absolutely awesome.

If you know what you're doing it's very easy to get your sites earning enough to cover hosting each month.

You can set it up on your own computer and play around with it. Here's a tutorial that explains how to set Wordpress up on your own computer.

Any free host will give you a subdomain as your web site. So nothing different from the blogger you are using.

Buy a domain with Godaddy. I think they offer you free hosting. Check details at godaddy.com.

If you just want to learn the basics of WordPress you could always get a free wordpress.com account.

It's restrictive, a lot like Blogger and you can't use it to promote your affiliate stuff or for any commercial purpose. But the price is right (and honestly, you wouldn't expect to set up any commercial service on a free host anyway).

It's good for learning the ropes until you can get the 10 bucks a month together for proper hosting. Once you do install the version of WordPress from wordpress.org and you're in business.

How much of a business are you trying to start?

Some people need to ask themselves if this is a business or a hobby. I know people are struggling with money and can't afford certain expenses but hosting is cheap and a VERY vital part of an online business.

If you can't afford $5 a month for basic hosting then maybe you should be worrying about other bills and other avenues of income that only cost your time.

Can't you go without a cup of coffee a week or some other treat?

Trying to start a real business with NO budget is not realistic at all. Offline is the same as online, you need a budget, even if the differences are huge.

I don't mean to sound harsh but you will have to spend money eventually to start a real business.

From the sound of your post, I take it you want to learn WordPress before you spend any money for a hosting account.

Depending on whether you have a PC or a Mac, you can download MAMP for a Mac or XAMPP for PC. Both are free.

If you Google -- Wordpress on a local host - you can see how to download and install either of these.

There are great instructions at the wordpress.org site and another great place to learn is youtube.com

First, learn what you need to using the above free resources, then you'll have the confidence to go forward with your business.

Just be aware, "Build it and they will come" doesn't apply when your site is sitting in a cul-de-sac on the information highway.

You're still going to have to put up road signs to get targeted visitors to your site.

I wish you well and no amount of telling you to spend money will help when you don't have it to spend.

You were one of the people that really saw what I was asking and for that I say, "Thank the lord!". I can get some traffic. I'm getting better with article marketing and profile backlinks. So I'm starting to get my feet wet. I figure if I have learned xhtml and css (And a teeny bit of php) I can get used to wordpress...I just don't want to throw money I don't have at something I may not use.

            Dustin,

If you have knowledge of CSS, XHTML and can at least read PHP, you'll have no problem with Wordpress.

It's actually quite fun to take the free theme and change it to fit your business.

So play and have total fun.

              Alright Judith,

I'm trusting you on this one. I'll jump right in. The host someone mentioned earlier will let me host for free (With little bandwith, but I'm just experimenting). Thanks again to everyone who replied with advice!

Any plugins and such that are must haves with it?

I've understood actually you are little reluctant to get hosting before you know anything about WP.

It's good that you want full control on WP before starting actual work, so in this case for you the better is to download WP as one of the warrior provided link above and do as per tutorial. Spend some time and when you feel confident then grab a hosting and start playing with WP.

                    Dustin,

                    I recommend these free plugins:

SI CAPTCHA anti-spam and NOT Akismet

                    Tabber Widget from ithemes

                    Widget Logic

W3 Total Cache (helps make site run faster. Activate after you've put in your content)

I've spent money on hosting before with xhtml/css websites I've hand coded. I've spent time and money on this, I'm just not ready to shell out money to something I've never worked with yet.

You can use wordpress.com to create a blog in a manner similar to blogger (vs. wordpress.org where you would download wordpress to use on your own server).

I really don't know much about free hosting except for sites like wordpress and blogger, but hosting on a site like godaddy should only cost you a few dollars per month for a basic account ($4-5).

Like i said I never did anything with it or even tried but it might worth checking out, also xampp is pretty easy as well

the cost of a year's hosting and domain is less than one full tank of gas. if you arent willing to invest money in a domain and host then this industry just isnt for you.

Dude, I wouldn't even worry about it, WordPress is so easy to use that even *I* can do it and do it well. It's incredible, and very easy to use. Get some hosting and install WordPress and I guarantee that you'll have your first site up in half an hour.

Bad idea. WP and GD is a very bad combination! GD hosting is a bad idea by itself...

Hosterbox is a good, reliable hosting company and just now they are offering a free account (as a special promo - but it is lifetime) with CPanel and latest Wordpress installed with Fantasico. There are unlimited databases and sub-domains allowed so you could build loads of blogs

You need a Domain name first for this, though : Hosterbox - Portal Home (not my aff. link - this is what I was given)

Also, Byethost.com have good free accounts where you don't need to buy a domain name to get started (you can create subdomains on their top level domain names) They have 50 databases available.

Free Hosting, Paid Hosting, Reseller Services & VPS Servers : Byet Internet

Wordpress installation is very easy here to, they run something called VistaPanel which is slightly different to CPanel.

Great thing about Byethost is that if you decide to upgrade to paid hosting you will only pay something like $4/month and will get a free .com, .net, .org domain thrown in. They will even take everything you want off the free hosting and set it up on the new paid hosting for you for free.

Dustin, hostgator has its famous 1 cent first month special. If you really knuckle down and do something with your Wordpress blog, I'm sure you could start earning enough to pay for the monthly hosting fees after 30 days. You have to put your mind to it and really decide that you want to make this work.

In my opinion, all this free stuff actually hurts you more than it helps, because you end up not taking things as seriously when there isn't any money on the line.

Sel;f hosted wordpress if installed correctly can be far more beneficial that the free blogger sites and far more secure
