13 year old PR4 domain - What do you think?

I am looking to buy a domain that is 13 years old. Its a .net domain. Domaintools.com shows 3 registrars with no drops.

Somewhat related to my niche. If the domain was about "socks" in 1997, mine will be on "shoes".

Is PR4 but has only about 20 links which are not related to my keyword but closely related to my niche.

Website was live on it till 2009, but is parked since then.

The domain name itself is not related but is a good catchy non dictionary name.

The price quoted is 300$.

Questions
1. Do you think this is a good deal?
2. Can I build 5000 links within a month and expect results or atleast not be penalized by G?

Edit:
The domain is currently indexed.

Thanks guys
Vij

    - Not a good deal as Google will most probably drop the PR if you don't build links to it.
    - Content on your site also matters for PR.

Just because the domain is PR4, it doesn't mean it will get indexed immediately(that is the main goal of PR - to get your new pages cached fast).

It's been parked for a long time... So you can be pretty sure that Google will not index unless you build more links. And if you don't have quality content on the site and don't build revelant links, your PR will definitely drop.

You can build 5000 links a month and not be penalized by Google for anything. But you will always notice the Google dance. Most of them call the dance, Google's penalizing them.

My site which was page 5 for a product keyword and page 1 for product name scam. I wanted to make it rank for product name and so I built links to it.

Within the next few days, I got kicked to position 35 somethin but no.1 for product name scam. I updated some site content and built some links.

And then in two weeks, I got to page 3. The links you build don't matter that much compared to the out going links from your site.

Keep your outgoing links minimum and increase the incoming links. If you take a brand new site, add around 30 pages of content(few pages of unique content) with wordpress and build around 500-1000 links(5-10 articles via AMR), Google will believe your site to be authority and will start indexing you in a few minutes. And you'll have a PR0 ultra fast.

Now you can build that PR by building more links and more content to your site...

Thanks for your interesting inputs tylerdrun.

It might be indexed but your new content will not get indexed for at least another month. Plus you need to build backlinks to it. If it wasn't on Google's index, it won't have PR.

Ofcourse the intention is to build backlinks like a crazy zombie on steroids :p
The only reason I am considering this domain is because I was under the impression that having a related domain(not name) that has high PR and pre-2000 age can be hit with massive links in short time to get quick results.

First..no offense, but most of the advice here is terribly wrong and misleading...

Second..PR has nothing to do with the number of links, it's all about quality of links and the pr of the linking pages.

Third, the domain keeps the PR or loses it according to few factors:

-If it is just dropped, most probably it will keep pr and you'll get it with the current pr.

-If it has been already deleted and being available through regular registrars, it will lose it's pr.

-If you receive it with the PR, you need to add relevant content quickly to keep it.

-Its not true that a domain with no content isn't being indexed, aged domains with pr and previously indexed are getting indexed even with no content.

Finally, if you make sure it will keep its PR, and the domain itself is closely related to your niche, then it's not a good deal, IT'S A STEAL!

He is right. At that price it is a steal. If you think the domain is good for your niche then go for it, it's age will help you a lot (if it never been dropped).

no. of links u build even for a new domain dont matter. If you build too many links, you will go through Google Dance especially for a new site. Your listing might even disappear completely.

But you aren't actually sandboxed. Rankings will take time. A site coming in yesterday will not get the top spot tomorrw irrespective of no. of links it has.

but a site that is few months old will get the rank if it has regular updated content. So Id buy a new domain and build links to it if I were you.

It seems like a good bargain but building 5000 links within a month is not very advisable. It could land you into probs with G. You can have the site indexed within a week or two. It depends on how you work at getting indexed. There are many ways out there of getting indexed. Few work nowadays though. Getting enough quality content with the right keywords is a good starting point.
