How do you go about checking backlinks on google.

For yahoo, the way to do it is link:http://www.website.com

What's the command to use for google?
#backlink #google

    Same at google: link:www.website.com

But you'll get much more detailed stats with a sitemap and Google's webmaster tools:

That's the problem with google as they don't report all the backlinks.

As for yahoo, the backlinks is only applicable to yahoo but not for google.

For webmaster tools, it can only help to check backlinks for your own website but how do you go about finding out your competitors?

There are programs available that report all the existing google backlinks, they are worth the investment.
