Reasons for a Hosting Account being Suspended?

Hi
In this last week we had our website's hosting account suspended so that our websites went offline.

We do not yet get much traffic and so that could not be the reason for the suspension.

All the host would say is that we were using too much bandwidth and they had to shut us down so we did not crash their server.

Any ideas what this would cause this?

Could it be wordpress plugins that we are using?

This is all new to me. I have not experienced this before and so have no idea what to do to prevent the problem from occurring again in the future.

Thanks for any ideas.

Leanne

It's quite possible that one or more plugins could be causing problems, particularly if you are using any of them to scrape other sites, run repeated searches, etc..

[I once used a perl script to automate a chore in my maintenance list. It was supposed to run once per day. I made an error setting up the cron, and it was running every 24 seconds rather than every 24 hours.]

Another possibility is a security hole or backdoor, which is allowing someone else to use your bandwidth.

Have you looked at whatever control panel your host uses for a bandwidth report?

Another thing you could do is contact your host's tech support people and ask for help tracking and fixing the problem.

It could be a that you've got a script running more often than you need to or possibly even a wordpress plugin as you suggested. If you have video on your site I would that is DEFINITELY it. Most don't know how much bandwidth simply hosting a 4 minute video can take up.

Ask the host which site is the offender. Then, once it is identified, disable all the plugins. Enable them one by one. If everything is still OK, look at the traffic and where it's coming from. If you have a lot of visits from a single IP, then block that IP because it likely is a scammer using your account for no good!

Try installing the WP Super Cache plugin, that could solve the issue.

I've actually installed that but it didn't help me much. Are there some particular settings I should activate?

The main reason for a hosting account being suspended is:

    You chose the wrong webhost.

The first things you need to ask your webhost are whether they limit concurrent connections, whether they limit mysql queries, whether they provide burstable bandwidth and whether they will grow with you.

        I'll second that.

If you purchase shared hosting then just about every hosting provider will promise you the earth, until you subscribe ...

You need to specify as near as you can, as to exactly what you want from the hosting account, before you sign up. Ensure too that there is the flexibility to upgrade to a more suitable account plan without your existing account being limited for breach of your host's T&C for that particular initial sign up account.

        Just my thoughts.

        Regards,
        Jeff.

I am now seeing that we did select the wrong host and we are now moving to another host.

        Thanks for the tips

Hi - moving to a new hosting provider might not solve the problem; it might be that you are running outdated versions of wordpress or haven't upgraded all plugins. I'd suggest that you get tech support from your old host to tell you what went wrong just in case it causes more issues at your new host.
