Two other alternatives I tried are GetClicky and PiWik.

GetClicky works much like Google Analytics where you place javascript code on your website and then you go to their website to view your tracking. This is free to track 1 website.

Piwik is an open source analytics tool that you upload and install to your webserver. I think there is a way you can use one install to track across multiple websites you own.

For a wordpress plugin check out Statpress been using it for a while now and I haven't had any problems with it. It's a one click install and doesn't require any kind of setup.

In terms of information it'll give you all the usual stuff:
      • Search Terms
      • Referrers
      • Page Hits
      • IP addresses/Country

    I personally use google analytic.
    Why?
because it is accurate, timely and i play around with SEO for google SEs so i need to know everything that google does/think/work with my sites. I also use there webmaster tools.

Most of my sites are wordpress blogs, its easy to use them there, get a wordpress plugin called 'Google analytic for wordpress' install it. Then get a analytic account, create new profile and add the Code starting with the 'UA -xxx' to the plugin and your done! Its that easy.

    Why is it important?
Because it gives you source of traffic, hotspots in your site and lots of info. You need to always keep track of how you perform so that you can improve where you lack.

I use Google Analytics the vast majority of the time, but I do have a couple of sites that use Statcounter.

I was on a program a while ago that suggested SEO Quake. Not sure if that's what you are referring to here. It puts a bar on the screen whenever you visit a website and you can see the ranking, owner, etc from that particular website. I find it quite useful for some quick info.

Google Analytic does a good job for me so far. Just add the script into Wordpress and it's done.

Google Analytics. My company adds this to the blogs/websites we build for customers. The customers like all the details GA provides, along with the ease of use. We also discuss GA during training sessions with customers. Best wishes to you.

I always use Goggle Analytics to check the insights of my websites traffic as I blindly trust on this application by Google for it's accuracy.

There are some opinions out there which suggest not to use GA and allow G to go deep insight of your sites and use other sites like GetClicky but I still believe on GA and quite happy to use it.

    I'm liking Piwik a lot.

For folks who are skittish about sharing their data with G,
    it's a solid self-hosted alternative.

Pretty much become part of a standard domain config now.
