how do you discover good retail categories?

I have a question about how you would suggest an e-commerce retail company identify new product categories to get into.

Bottom line is how do you discover good retail categories unrelated to what you are selling

So - I am wondering how you suggest a company research a new category first? Besides the obvious tools like google KW tool or google insight or other similar KW tools. If I am selling shoes, maybe I want to sell washing machines on another site - so I want to be totally open to any category. I mean how would I know in the first place that washing machines are a great category??? Thats the key

It there a tool or service that identifies the hot selling categories online for retailers?

In the past we have gone into hot categories like GPS and even Vacuum Cleaners - both with tons of search volume. But competition was super strong and margins really poor - even if you inventory product.

Any help here to have a standard way to find new categories would be great and I am sure your other readers would be interested as well. If the information is really good though feel free to just send it to me

thanks so much

The consensus is to use Amazon and look for best sellers "off the beaten path." Items with 50+ reviews are definitely in demand. Home and garden is a good place to start. Electronics are extremely competitive.

Thanks for the reply, we have used Amazon for guidance

And yes we are looking at home and garden

But how can you tell what is a popular category vs a not as popular category?

      thanks

you can tell using the bestsellers category in amazon

you can also check ebay pulse which gives information about what's popular on ebay at any given time.

I really thought there would be a more concrete way. Like maybe some of the paid services or sites like compete.com or comscore or something like that. But Amazon and ebay are good places to start

      Thanks

Why don't you check out the competition. What are similar websites selling; who is the biggest retailer in your neighborhood who is selling these items? Go stand in their store and watch what folks are actually buying.

If this is a long-term project, I'd also suggest attending a trade show; watch which trade stands are buzzing; that's a great way to spot new trends or identify hot products/suppliers.

        Hope that helps
