New to Internet Marketing: No Need for Student Loan next Year?

Hi there,

My name is Joe; I've been an extremely avid reader of the Warrior Forums for the past week or so. (By 'avid' I mean I was reading an AdSense thread during my walk home from the takeaway tonight - I just can't stop myself!)

I've found everything on these forums absolutely intriguing. I love the idea of having a passive income, particularly during uni where a couple of extra quid to buy a round at the pub wouldn't go a miss.

I've taken so much information in I can't possibly act on it all at once, particularly as I've read such varying methods of monetizing sites, finding niches, creating traffic (you get the idea...).

My Internet Marketing model

I'll summarize this quite a bit, partly because I'm not entirely sure how I'll go about some things, and partly because I flat out don't have a clue how I'll go about other things

I am planning on creating a series of micro niche websites. I can't really say an amount of websites I'd like to have because that depends on how successful each website becomes. Obviously I could strive to reach a goal of 100 websites by February, but this may net less than creating 30 websites would by February if I made myself traffic and revenue targets. Seeing as revenue is my one and only end goal for this, I'd take the latter any day.
- So I'll leave this part pretty empty I guess, a figure in my head I'd like to have possibly by February is 10-20 I would say...

Monetization

I plan on monetizing with AdSense placed in areas in which I have read convert the best, but I will also attempt my own testing with ad placements and colours. I will also be placing Amazon affiliation links within the content of my sites.

I don't see myself really attempting to sell digital products unless a particularly good niche opens up and there's a market for them. In that case I'd just follow where the money was and try monetizing with Clickbank.

Outsourcing?

I won't be outsourcing anything whatsoever. I (think) I enjoy writing. I am, however, not experienced at all and have not yet had to write large amounts of quality material as of yet. (Other than a few A level essays!)

I am familiar with the popular CMS's, I'm going to be using Wordpress though as I find it the easiest for the simple things a micro niche blog needs, and is easily customizable with regard to layout.

Finding A Niche

I think this is kinda the holy grail of this business model, is this correct? I'd also imagine that once you're able to find a niche, you're able to find more niches. By this I mean, once you have your niche finding methods in place, finding them shouldn't be 'too' hard?

Some of the methods I'm going to use:
  • Google Keyword Search
  • Ebay Pulse
  • Amazon (general categories)
  • Other retail stores - Popular products etc
  • Making notes on my phone if I think I spot a potential niche when generally out of the house
I believe there are hundreds/thousands more ways of finding a profitable niche, you just need to think outside the box and use your head. I think I can relate my recent niche finding to being on youtube... I always get carried away with the related videos, I can sit there for ages, but it always leads to something I like. This kinda happens when I use Google Keyword Search. (Sorry, I can't explain my thoughts properly!).

SEO

I hope I'll be finding good enough keywords that I won't have to do a ridiculous amount of backlinking and all that jazz.

I'll be using 'All in one SEO' for Wordpress for my on page SEO.

I'll be submitting articles to the popular directories, I don't know how many yet as it varies for every site. I guess it'll be between 1-5? (not a clue with this really).

To conclude

I apologize for not (being able) to go into detail about all the points raised above, I do however hope to gain enough experience over the next few weeks to be able to answer them in more detail.

You may have noticed I've used words such as 'plan' and 'hopefully' quite a bit in this OP. This is because nothing I've mentioned this far is set in stone, I know how things in business change very easily, so I need to be able to adapt to changing conditions in the marketplace/s and with the various IM practices.

I have hosting already which includes 2 databases. My knowledge of the CMS's is from tihs previous year where i've been teaching myself how to make a website, but with no real end goal - not with IM in mind. So I am completely new to IM (adsense, affiliates etc).

I have one question for the moment if that's OK...

I think I've found a real nugget of a niche by using the keyword search combines with checking out Amazon. Some of the combinations of keyword (some 3 words long) have CPC's of £100+. This is with 1000-2500 searches a month, and only 8 results with the allintitle query.

  1. Does this seem like a good niche? What other figures should I check out before pursuing?
  2. How accurate is the big G's estimated CPC?
  3. Is the CPC the amount I personally get paid per click? Or the amount the advertiser is paying in total in his campaign?

I'll be checking this thread non stop, it'd be great if we could get some questions going or if some other people want to hop along and start at the same time as me.

Thanks for reading,

Joe

Ahh yes... I remember 4 months ago when I started on this forum.

I was in the EXACT position as yourself... thinking of, and only limiting myself, to AUTO BLOGS!

However, I personally do not think this is the route to go for beginners. There is so much optimization that must be done to get a GOOD income. I'm not saying you can't make money starting now, but it will be very little for a long time.

What I have been doing lately is providing SERVICES. I think this is the #1 thing beginners should consider. In one week of promoting my backlink service, I have made about $150.

Yeah, not much, but it sure is more than what you will make with auto blogging as a beginner.

I'm sure many people will comment on this theory of mine, but I bet you these 'many people' have been around IM for 6+ months now and have forgotten the mindset of a 'noob'.

Don't get me wrong, you CAN make money! Heck, you might strike gold and get a great niche by stroke of luck. The expenses however, will start to add up and up until you no longer have any money left.

Fun post to read, you've really thought a lot about things.

You can check a dozen heuristics and all the signs can be there to indicate really terrific keywords but...

Things happen you can't control or didn't control and awesome keywords look like or turn to crap.

You can't not look around and try to find decent keywords to hedge your bet but there will never be any guarantees. So you might want to just go for it and see what happens.

You probably want to set some sort of stop loss though based on time or some other criteria that's important to you. I personally like the $100 gauge. I'll throw myself into something until I make $100 and then reevaluate to see if it's worth continuing.

As you find your way trying to make money online you'll probably throw quite a bit of 'stuff' at the wall before you see what sticks - so be sure to throw plenty. Best of luck.

Don't go with big G's estimations of CPCs, it is never true and keep fluctuating. Although the niche you have found can be a gold mine since you get only 8 results with allintitle query and with around 1-2k searches per month it will be absolutely easy to rank for.

    Here are few suggestions:
Get unique and quality content for your site.
get exact keyword match TLD domain[com/net/org only]
get indexed before putting adsense, once done add adsense and keep adding content periodically, depends on how much you want to add until you get around 10 articles or so.
start building backlinks and keep working on it!

If you get stuck somewhere don't forget to ask around or drop me a message

take action and stick to it!

    Thanks for the replies

    Swords:

How are you doing now mate? Is it coming on well?

I've kinda been outsourcing my work for the past year. I am an off/on freelance graphic designer (unqualified), but I designed car wash marketing material, packaging for a mass produced electrical item, logos and so on. Thing is, work is hard to come by given my small portfolio, and tbh I'm not all that fussed on doing this sort of stuff anymore though I do enjoy making the odd logo or whatever. I was elected head of arketing and PR for my uni society last week so I'm going to be doing their designs from now on.

Regarding the expenses, as I've said I've already got my hosting sorted which includes 2 MySQL databases and plenty of storage, so my only costs would be for the domains really. (and time, but I don't value my time really given I have any other methods of earning money at the moment.).

    Doug Slaton:

Thanks for the encouragement. I certainly do not mind getting my hands dirty and testing the waters. I don't mind being beaten or failing as it will only help me learn in the long run.

Can you explain your stop loss a little bit more by any chance? Over what time frame of earning $100 would you consider it a non-goer?

I'm really looking forward to just seeing some pennies add up in my Adsense account

    sameerjoad:

Cheers. I kind of assumed those cpc's were unreliable and a tad rediculous. When I first saw the £130 estimated CPC I just thought no way, but still managed to get excited lol.

That's all really awesome advice, thank you so much. I'll be executing all of those suggestions for sure. It shouldn't be too hard to rank for I don't think.

Taking action and sticking to it is exactly what I plan on doing

    I have another question...

The keyword I plan on targeting has x amount of 'global monthly searches', but about a tenth of the amount of 'local' monthly searches. Should this matter at all?

    Thanks again!

    UPDATE:

Just purchased my first propper IM domain

It's an exact match with a hyphen in between the two words, but it's .org.

I know this may not seem to be the perfect option, but the exact matches were taken, and the hyphenated .com was also taken.

I don't think it's going to be 'too' much of a problem though, I don't think it will be too hard to rank for the keyword

Very excited to get going now!

I'm going to start writing some content right now and search for a nice layout to use
