What approach should I take when trying to get back into IM

Hey everyone,

Wow I haven't posted here in a really long time, its been to long.

Anyway I really want to get back into internet marketing and of course make some money.

One thing I didn't do well enough the last time though was plan! I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how they plan before they start a new project.

I feel like even though its only been a year the internet changes so quickly I've missed so much. What are some new marketing techniques that really seem to have a lot of potential?

Thanks,

Eric

  • Yes, the internet changes quickly indeed, welcome back!

As for planning, I use freemind (free mindmapping software) as well as some form of to do list manager, like mylifeorganized.

As for new marketing techniques...I'd recommend you to stick to what has worked for you in the past. There really isn't anything new...get targeted traffic, presell them properly, expose them to an offer, make money. This principle will never change.

Eric, in addition to mind maps, one of the best tools for organization and planning in my opinion is decidedly low-tech - an erasable whiteboard. The great thing about this is that what you write can be easily changed as needed, and more importantly it's something you always see many times on a daily basis (of course this is assuming you place it in your office or place that you work so that you're constantly viewing it).

It works wonders in keeping you on task and focused, in my opinion. While you can do the very same thing online or in a computer application, the act of physically writing things down and then seeing those words all the time in plain sight tends to keep you more focused on what really matters.

The stuff that truly works long-term in IM hasn't changed much, and that includes squeeze pages, listbuilding and affiliate marketing. I'd stay away from any of the new marketing techniques that may only work for the short-term, especially if you're reentering IM after a long hiatus.

I agree with the list building and squeeze pages. The internet changes so fast that trying the new "latest and greatest" techniques can cause you to loose more time and become confused and eventually walk away again. I would start off by writing down what skill sets you have. Take into account what you are trying to accomplish.

Are there any possible niches that you are familiar with already that can give you a head start in your product creation or search for similiar affiliate programs? Once you have a tight focus on those few basics, begin building a list for that market (if it seems to be profitable). Build a list and take care of it. Over deliver when it comes to customer satisfaction. Distribute great content to that list.

If you take care of that list, that list will definetly take care of you. With all the google rule changes, you never want to put all your eggs (traffic sources) in one basket. See you at the top!

Maybe depends on what you were doing a year ago?

Google cracked down on a lot of accounts with poor sites and landing page issues so take care if you use PPC, "bridge pages" was a fairly common cause of problems.

Also search rankings have been hit for some sites, particularly low quality sites that use adsense or even just sites that are "over optimized" or have poor linking strategy.

    all the best,
    Neil

Any approach would work under 1 conditions: Focus!!!!
You may have hundreds of good idea and try different method, but if you're not focus on one single thing until it works, then it's gonna be wasted. So my personal advice: Stay focus until it works!
Good luck and Welcome back to IM

Aaaaaand there is your first big mistake!

Stay away from the glitter and stick to the basic.

Have a solid product and sell it to people who are hungry for a solution.
