What are the advantages /disadvantages of 'bum marketing' vs. a blog?

I'm just wondering why people do bum marketing- which seems to be flooding certain sites with articles in a quantity over quality format vs. having a more static blog which I presume would be more about quality of content.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach?

My opinion is quality of content is preferable. If visitors come to your site and just bounce back and mostly they will do if your site does not have quality contents, this has a bad impact for search engine result.

What do you mean by 'bounce back'? I presume you mean they are repulsed by it due to the poor quality of the content?

I presume though that that is one of the advantages of bum marketing in that you are doing a shotgun approach but hosting content on places which are not tied to you. I read how people just swamp them with articles under many different pen names.

So it would kind of be like polluting a river but noone knows specifically who did it so they can keep doing it. Something like that .

Bum marketing = shotgun method which delivers loads of shrapnel but isn't very accurate?

vs. sniper method on blogs which has more quality and targeted content?

    Does this sound right?

I imagine the advantage of bum marketing are the coveted backlinks every internet marketer wants. If the disadvantage is substandard articles, you could remedy that by writing quality articles. Then bum marketing will be a win-win with no disadvantages. Think about it, you can write about 10 articles using the same keyword set so its not like you have to do kw research for each individual article. The research is usually the most time consuming aspect of article writing.

it's all about the links. having just a single blog is can be simple when it comes to maintenance but may not give you the best quality traffic for your site as well as page ranking.

I think a blog is better because the blog it self can get ranked and so can each post that you add to it

The main benefactor of bum marketing is the product creator. Not to take anything away from Travis (genious), but this does instill a quantity vs quality sense of action in people. It is of no doing of Travis (who tells you to harp the probelms and how to solve them), but many people have taken it way out of context.

That said, bum marketing is a great way to start out. Get some exposure and practice writing. Test things out while potentially getting paid for it. The numbers Travis talks about may not be there for most people, but you can still make a dime this way.

I should note that the purpose if bum marketing was never really the backlink, though smart marketers will make sure they get one in the process. And you can be as scattered or precise as you wish. Both work in the long run if you stick to it.

My preferred method would be to post quality content on my site directed to my offer (affiliate or otherwise) then submit that content to the directories linked to my site. I will usually mass submit the articles to many directories at this point, mainly for the links... but you will get some traffic. Then repeat.

When you combine the power of your own site with the power of bum marketing it makes things much easier. And it doesn't take much longer to do BOTH at the same time than it does to do just the one.
