What do you outsource?

Not very clever? Why would you hire an employee that isn't smart? I have my guys do everything. Email, customer service, lead gen, seo, ppc, picking my nose... whatever!

lol, very good point. The main element of my business that I outsource is web design.

I hate installing and setting up websites and outsource the design and creation of my sites while I'm able to focus on more important moeny making factors.

Minimum experience is ok, because you can always train the right person. But why would you hire someone who's not very clever?

I think you have it slightly backwards. It seems you have a freelancer in mind, and now you're trying to figure out what kind of work to give to him. I think a better way to approach it is to decide what tasks you need done... and THEN hire the best person (or people) for the job.

Let me give you an exaggerated example.

Walmart hires a person for unknown tasks. Then they start looking at what they really need, and they need someone to unload and empty boxes, stock high shelves, etc. Problem is, they hired a grandma who can hardly lift her own cat. She might be a great greeter, but she'd make a poor stock person.

See what I mean? It's better to figure out what work needs to be done first and then hire the right person for the job.

Agree. You hire a person who already has experience or who is at least knowledgeable about the job you are outsourcing. Training limits to how you want him/her to do the tasks in the context of your project. With hundreds of skilled freelancers out there, why would you choose someone who you think is not clever enough? It doesn't make sense to me.

Like any training program repetition of basic chores will build up their skills. Have them learn one thing at a time until they are proficient. And never assume they know, even when they say they do. In the beginning it is more work for you but that should change as the skill level advance and you are comfortable on the quality of their work.

I outsource pretty much all of the content writing that won't be done for the actual website. I try to write as much of the copy as I can, for the site itself. Or, at least outsource to a better writer.

Hire a better grade of operative! There are thousands of highly educated people out there looking for work. Specify exactly what you want, invite applications, verify references and lay out clear instructions.

Ok, lets be more specific, what work would you give your admin when promoting your website? How do you handle the person if they are bored, since this kind of work is boring. I'm planning to hire someone for 8-5 kind of work.

Backlinking, submissions and social media are the main ones, other than that cut-and-paste and basic research type stuff.

In regard to preventing them from getting bored... many workers I know (including myself) use boring repetitive tasks as a great opportunity to listen to webinars, audio books, music, talk on skype...

BTW - this is hardly something unique to IM... people do this all the time when filing, driving long distances, doing data entry, etc

For one website? There would not be enough for them to do :p

I have a full-time VA that handles promotion and odds and ends for roughly 12 websites

The management technique is really basic - we use a GoogleDocs spreadsheet to track projects/time/pay and emails for new assignments or any questions.

backlinking

getting twitter followers
getting facebook fans
tweeting my posts and recommended urls
likeing my posts and recommended urls through facebook
creating social media accounts
updating ping.fm
blog commenting
forum posting
classified ad posting
creating Squidoo lenses (using training video I provide)

This varies depending on which niche the site is in.

I create a weekly schedule to be followed for each site such as:

URL: mysite.com

Monday:
create social media accounts
follow x people in the x niche on twitter
etc

You can delegate anything - just as long as you are able to provide them with training and very specific instructions regarding what you want them to do

I think data entry work which is necessary and does not require any expertise . because it has to be done with someone and if you outsource it you save great amount..
