Can You use .info domain names for your blogs?

I know .com is best, but wondering if this works too.

Yes, it works. You just need to add this domain to your hosting

Yes, you can. There's no SEO difference at all.

The two main things you might want to think about, in this connection are :-

      (i) Does someone else own the .com? You might lose some traffic to them, some future time ...

(ii) Are you ever planning to sell it? It can be worth more on a .com domain, simply because so many people wrongly believe that .com domains have an SEO advantage over .info domains.

If you can live with those "drawbacks" (if they are drawbacks, to you), then use a .info by all means.

It isn't preferable, but you certainly can do it. Keep an eye on your .info renewals. The registrars will often lure you in with a dirt cheap price for new .info domains, hope that you leave the domain on auto renew, then hit you with a high renewal price while you aren't paying attention.

Wow I never knew this. I need to keep an eye out for that.

Seems like .info would fit a blog more because blogs provide info.

I've had no issues with using .info domains. I usually use a .com, but when I need a domain quick and for cheap, I pickup a .info domain. The only case I wouldn't use something like this is if I were to use it for branding a business or a product that I created.

I would like to know if .info domains have any SEO disadvantage at all to .com domains? (im about to create a lot of blogs and would like to know cause I could really use the extra money if I can get .info domains, but if there is a disadvantage, I wont get them)

No, they don't inherently carry any SEO disadvantages.

But a lot of people believe they do, and that stops them from using .info domains (and many other less common TLDs, too) for their sites, or putting in the work to build up the ones they have.

Then when they don't rank as well or build up as much authority, they post on forums, declaring - quite surprisingly (or not) - that .info domains don't/can't rank as well.

Don't be fooled; it's their own darn fault.

I use one for my personal blog that deals with my hobbies, interests and other things that are going on with me aside from my business. For business related websites/blogs I of course go with .com, .net or .org whenever possible.

People kept answering questions about me on facebook and other social media sites incorrectly and I felt the need to create some sort of a blog where those curious about me could get to know me better.

.INFO domains are a tarnished treasure as they say. For a while go daddy was selling them for $1.99 per year. Sadly, as a result they were used by many a spammer. That is tragic, and they quickly lost their magic.

It is like working in a pawn shop or selling used cars. Maybe you are honest, but it will hurt your rep. Trust me on this one.

What are you insinuating? That those who used .info domains for spam websites have caused Google to penalise or somehow devalue the whole .info TLD?

What you said (or at least how I interpreted it) held some truth, at least: during the time of the insanely cheap, widespread .info promotions, a lot of people did spam with .info domains, and Google rightly deindexed or penalised those sites - just as they continue to with all the spam they find, regardless of whether it's on a .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, or .ws, etc ... (And as they also would with a .gov or .edu, if they were spamming, engaging in BlueFart on-site SEO or otherwise engaging in "illegal" activity.)

But Google is not that petty, nor that stupid, as to be prejudiced against every domain of a certain TLD, "just because".

No; it's not even based on a tiny grain of truth.

You'll always be given conflicting information about this subject (so get used to that!), because there'll always be some people (though fewer and fewer, over the months/years, mercifully) who mistakenly believe that .info domain names have some SEO disadvantage.

Domain extensions have no effect on SEO at all. Google's own Matt Cutts says so. He says so regularly and repeatedly, in writing, on video and on Google's blog. He says so forcefully and unambiguously; and he invites people to quote him on it.

But there are still people who believe otherwise.

What tends to be behind the "reasoning" of the people who imagine that, I suspect, is the reality that you see comparatively fewer .info domains ranking in the no. 1 position of Google's SERP's than .com domain names. Some people look only very superficially and imagine that that's evidence of a disadvantage in SEO terms. What it's actually evidence of is simply the fact that some people imagine there's a disadvantage in SEO terms and for that reason they don't use .info domains when they want sites to rank well; obviously enough, because they don't use so many .info domains for that purpose, lo and behold there are fewer of them there, surprise surprise, shock horror ...

Actually Godaddy was selling them for less than a dollar around $.80c + icann fee for quite some time this year. I have no idea what the current price is.

I have purchased many .info domains over the years, probably over 1000 but I only have a handful left, they are nearly all dropped or upgraded to .com's etc now. I'm one of the people who do believe that a .com will get better SEO off the bat and I have seen and watched it all happen. This is not to say a .info can't be better placed than a .com, but I know I have seen .com's get indexed within hours while .info's can take weeks and quite often never. If you market the .info properly and do everything right then I'm sure it can place well, it's just a lot easier with a .com or .net or .org. That is my own experience anyway.

What a .info is good for and the only reason I would buy one now (if I can get one for less than $2) is to use it when a keyword domain is not available with the .com etc. This would include when there is no hyphen names either. I would then only use it until I'm able to buy a replacement .com, .net or .net name later before the name has to be renewed. I would then 301 the old domain to the new domain at least 2 months before it expires.

Welcome to the realities of learning internet marketing. Developing judgment about whom to believe, and to whom to listen, is hugely important. Not over this issue: this one's trivial and you can't really get it "wrong" anyway ... but in general.

Yes, it is fine. My company usually sets up .com domains, but .info are a popular choice too. A nice factor is that there are more open .info domains as well so customers are more likely to get the website name they prefer. Best wishes to you.

The only "negative" I can see is that I've seen polls and such quoted that suggested people are more hesitant to click on a .info link when a more common and recognizable .com is also available. E.g., in a group of search engine results.

Meaning in terms of actual clicks received, a #1 position on Google might not return quite the same results as you'd expect of a #1 with a .com suffix.

I just don't get it. Thins .info , that .info , brandable thingie. It's like when people say pagerank doesn't matter

You mentioned "polls," I know Tiffany Dow did surveys on this and found that .info domains are regarded as less commercial and more reliable for content (information) than .com domains. She also found many ranking high on the first page for certain terms.
The only other consideration is if you flip sites or domains the value is much less than .com.

If you get a .com domain of your choice then it is best and if not then there is no problem in taking .info domain. .com domains are more popular, so give first preference to that

If your desired domain not available in .com then you go for .info but make sure if .com with same name is already exist then try to find some else related keyword and serach for .com first if not available then go for .info.
