I recently started a thread asking if members would be interested in a certain that I am thinking about providing, but a few minutes it went live it got deleted. Now I've been a member here now for nearly 2 months and have read the forum rules several, but I am yet to find anything about why asking for advice on whether you guys would be interested in a certain service is against the rules.

Now I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, I am just really curious as to why it would have been deleted. I figured this would be the quickest way to find out.

99% of the time, questions like that turn out to be self-promotional or pre-selling threads. That's most likely why it was deleted.

It was a pre-sale survey for something you said you wanted to offer as a WSO. Very "launch-like." That's not allowed in the discussion sections.

If we allow that kind of post, the whole forum becomes one big pre-launch frenzy. Remember... If you think it's a good idea, so will a lot of other people. And there are things that are harmless in small quantities that are destructive in larger amounts. That would hit large amounts very quickly.

Yeah, I bet that moderators thought you were trying to get a following and then do a switch for a product/promotion. It happens a lot at a few forums that I use.

I just asking how many people would be interested in a service I was thinking about providing. I know it's not something that is already being provided so I didn't think there would be a problem seeing who would be interested. I don't want to go and provide a service for something when nobody wants to buy it. It was never going to be a WSO, but a service in the Service for Hire section.

If doing this sort of thing is considered wrong/bad, then wouldn't it be a good idea to update the rules?!

It's rather long, but you might want to read the thread about "being a better member moderator." It explains why it's not useful (or possible) to have specific rules for every possible circumstance.

By the way, what you did isn't "bad" by itself. The problem would (not might) come from the number of such threads being started once people got the idea they could do it as a part of a pre-launch promotional process.

I've never taken much notice of that thread because I didn't consider it official rules. You started that thread as what I presumed was just a recommendation. If any of that was to be official it would be best to add it to the rules. I've owned and administrated several forums as well as been a moderator on several others and having a complete set of rules where everything is listed in one place has always been the best policy in my and others I've worked opinion. But hey, everyone runs their sites differently so I guess I have to check all these threads before making any kind of thread in the future. :p
