Paypal Disputes... what's the point?

Am I missing something here?

I lodged a dispute with Paypal for someone who took my %50 and absconded without doing any work.

He hasn't replied and now the case will be closed.

Apart from having a whine, what purpose does this serve if the other party ignores it?

Disputes work best with physical products. There is not much buyer protection for digital or service based deals.

i bought a training program that was a complete sham a while back. once i realized it i emailed the seller three times and he ignored me. rather than initiating the dispute myself, i called paypal and showed them the website where he offered a money back guarantee unconditionally. they started a CLAIM for me and five days later i had my money. it's funny because at the time the lady said it would probably just close since it was digital products, but i got my money back anyway.

i think the bottom line is make darn sure you want to buy something via paypal if it's some sort of digital product. they offer no guarantees of a refund as such.
