Is Paypal popular to the banks in your country?

Hi Warriors,

I am just wondering, if you mention Paypal to
the staff at your local banks, will they know
what it is?

It amazed me that I have talked to numerous
staff in the banks located in Hong Kong and
they have no idea what Paypal is.

I thought it was popular among bankers
since so many people transfer money via
Paypal now.

The truth is that Paypal is very limited when you start talking about international e-commerce. They are afraid of many emerging markets. If you want to accept debit cards in eastern europe and other eastern venues you need another solution - like, um, for example, the service in my signature.

Why would I mention PayPal to people at my local bank?

  • I have never had a reason to mention PayPal, mind you I never actually go into a bank these days, probably over 3 years since I last did to open a business account.

Did you also mention Ebay at the same time? I am sure that if you mention that it is the prefered method for payments through Ebay, they should at least know what Ebay is.

However, I think Ebay / Paypal etc are still pretty Western focused, similar to Google, while it has huge marketshare in the western world in China and Russia is less then 20% of the search market. The same might be true for paypal?

My bank has no idea. I once had a hold up on a PayPal transfer, and trying to get the bank official to understand PayPal. I might as well have been talking about astrophysics to them.

Now, they just live with the knowledge that I somehow (magically) get money off the Internet and it ends up in their bank.

Funny too, because we have a PayPal Japan office in Tokyo.

Exactly what I mean Kevin. "They just live with the knowledge that

        their bank."

I didn't live in Hong Kong previously, so this is my first time trying
to transfer money from Paypal to a bank in Hong Kong.

They also have a ?? - PayPal just for Hong Kong. Guess
it still takes more time for it to become popular in the East.

Here in Japan, with most Japanese websites I still can't pay via PayPal. Usually, have to go make a bank transfer or pay via convenience store. I'm hoping the companies here will catch on soon, as it is not convenient.

Just to give you some words of advice: Paypal DOES scam people!

Go to paypalsucks.com, this isnt just a fluke anymore ... I know at least 3 people in my neighborhood who had their accounts frozen and all the BANKS know about paypal as well here.

Paypal does work, just make sure you clear out your account as often as possible to avoid it getting frozen for 180 days.
