Do RSS Feeds Really Help with Backlinking?

I hear a lot about using RSS feeds to get backlinks indexed by the search engines, but am beginning to wonder if this really works or not.

I've been building a lot of backlinks lately, and putting in the extra time to submit RSS feeds for the links to pinging services and directories. So far, I haven't seen any noticeable benefit over just building the links alone.

Are there any tips or tricks for maximizing the effectiveness of RSS feeds for backlinks, or is this a time-waster that I should simply give up on?

Thanks.

In my experience they help big time when your RSS is properly linked with feedburner, email, twitter, shorteners, directories etc.

Thanks for the reply Brad. Can you give a brief example of how you link all of these things together? Not asking for anything in depth, just an idea of how to best use RSS feeds to help with backlinking efforts.
