5 Rules Every Newbie Should Live By

Every day when I am reading these forums, I always see some type of post that is along the lines of "Help Me - Can't Make Money Online". The people who are usually posting these threads are *usually* very general about what they are struggling with. They want to be spoonfed information, and that just isn't going to happen. I've created a list of the five biggest problems that I think beginners are struggling with. Here is exactly what you should do if you are struggling with Internet Marketing.

1. Pick a Method
Some of the responses to threads about struggling beginner's say that they should pick a method and stick with it. That is great, but *most* posts don't really go into detail about what this really means. A method is sort of like a gameplan that you are going to follow in order to make money. You can read about these different gameplans just by reading the forum headings of some of these different forums. PPC, Offline Marketing, SEO, Affiliate Marketing, etc. These are all different types of methods. Find a good thread about one of these methods (using the search box) and follow it. (I would recommend NOT using PPC if you are just starting out). You can look for a complete step by step method just by looking at some of the most popular threads at some of these sub forums.

2. Don't Be Cheap!
In my opinion, this is one of the biggest faults of people that are just starting out Internet Marketing. They are looking for the cheapest way to get something done. Honestly, you CAN start off doing everything for free, but it isn't the most effective method in the LONG RUN. If you are going to be serious about marketing online, you should be willing to spend some money. If you can't spend 15 dollars on a domain and hosting, then IM probably isn't for you.

Not being cheap does NOT mean buying every single product that looks flashy. You can find 90% of the information that you will ever need just by reading this forum and by gaining experience. The other 10% will need to be paid for because people do find out some neat tips and tricks. Of course, these are just some random percentages that I just made up on the spot. But, I DO believe that you can be successful without spending a dime on an Internet Marketing product.

3. Stick with One Method
This means that if you don't make any money from starting a new method, DON'T GIVE UP. This is NOT going to happen overnight, and you should realize that. I would say that you should stick with one method for 6 WEEKS before you try to change to a different method. If you don't make money in 6 weeks using a PROVEN METHOD, you are either doing something wrong, or the method doesn't work (I would just guess the first option).

4. Just Do It!
Nike probably has the best slogan ever for Internet Market, "Just Do It!". Read a method, learn a method, and then apply that method. Do not sit around the forums and read about other methods (like I used to do). Try not to fall into the "information overload" mindset. Don't get caught up in all the hype of different products and just focus on making money for you.

5. Focus
This is very similar to the last point. Try to focus on what you are doing instead of worrying about other things that are happening around the Internet.

Do NOT check your email every 10 minutes
Do NOT check your Clickbank Stats every hour
Do NOT read the Warrior Forum for 5 hours every day.

You are allowed to take breaks, but they do not need to be hour long breaks. I usually take a break for 15 minutes every hour. I found that this is best system that works for me. This does NOT mean that I NEED to take a break every hour. If I am focused on a project and working for 3 hours straight, I might take a 30 minute break after I am done. You should try and find the best work to break ratio that works for you.

Hope that you found a couple of these tips helpful

This is so true! I think it's best to just stick with one method and learn it before jumping on to the next thing and then the next thing. That is my two cents. I've hopped around too much. I changed my focus and now I am starting to figure out the best path for me.

These are good - but I have a question about 3. Stick with One Method.. are you suggesting that trying multiple methods at once is a bad idea? Or just that one should not quickly give up on a certain method?

      Both :p

I think that you should learn and master one method before you move onto another one. If you start out trying to do 5 different things at once, you are not going to go anywhere.

Just because you don't see any money rolling in after 1-2 days, it does not mean that the method that you picked isn't working. Like I mentioned above, I think 6 weeks is a good time frame to keep working on something.

Which is what new IMers usually do thinking traffic is supposed to come at the speed of light as soon as they setup their sites and submit articles.

Hey I read Warrior Forums more than 5hours a day. I find it very relaxing

Great advice Mike! Thanks for sharing.

Sure, but what if you want to focus on two or three methods, and you devote time to each one? I don't see how that could be too problematic..?

It honestly comes down to a personal decision.

I would rather learn one method and learn as much information as possible for that one method.

I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to try several methods at once, but that isn't what I would recommend doing.
