Go to dashboard->Settings->Reading
choose the second radio button and it should look like this:
"front page displays -> a static page: Front Page: choose Home
Posts Page: choose Blog or the page you want the blog on.

Regarding the dates:
All you need to do is remove this code from your site:

< ?php the_time(‘F j, Y’); ? >

From your theme editor in your WP dashboard look for that code in your single.php and index.php. Than just delete it. And you now will have the dates gone.

Try removing <?php the_time('F jS, Y') ?> by <?php the_author() ?> in index.php, single.php, category.php, and archives.php.

For your static homepage you will need to go to the 'Reading' settings on your dashboard and select a page to be your Home Page.

Typically what I do is create a new page called 'Home', and of course, use that as my home page.

Then I will create a page called 'Blog' (or whatever), and use that as my blog page!

Additionally...if you ever want to disable the comments area throughout your blog, you can go to your single.php file and delete this portion:

<?php comments_template(); ?>

hey man: check this out. Go to a torrent page (btjunkie, demonoid, isohunt...just google one) and search torrents for [LYNDA.COM WORDPRESS] and you will find a couple awesome wordpress tutorials which will get you up and running. I am doing them myself.

Excellent advice. Lynda has alot of wicked tuts. Alot you have to pay for. I think you can get access to everything for $50 a month or so. I have never signed up, but it would be well worth it.
