GNU GPL Wordpress Theme?

sorry to intrude but I was looking for some free wordpress themes I could use and I noticed many were licensed under GNU GPL.

I'd like to know with this licensing do I have the right to edit the theme such as the footer legally?

Thanks

Uh answering my own question this is what I got from it:
"Themes licensed under GNU GPL Can be edited:
-The GPL does not require you to release your modified version, or any part of it. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them.

-A quick note about copyright and your site
From the start let's make one thing clear - you own your site, the content of the site is yours and does not belong to anyone else. There is an obligation to maintain the copyright notice within Joomla's PHP source code but you are not obliged to allocate the copyright of your site to anyone but you in the publicly visible page footer

Joomla is also registered under GNU GPL.

It mean if you edited the theme, you have to release it to public to download. That's the simplified version.

With the WP GPL license, if it's a php file containing WP code, the content is free to do with as you chose. Graphics, Javascript and CSS may or may not fall under the GPL license. It depends on the theme.

Yes, you can change remove or replace the content in your footer since it is a part of footer.php which falls under the WP GPL license.

And for the most part, if you're not redistributing the theme you don't have much to worry about unless it's a theme you've acquired questionably.

Incorrect. If you make modifications and redistribute GPL content, you have to make those modification publicly available. If you make modifications for personal use only, you don't have to make it publicly available.

So, feel free to remove all of those viagra links!
