Outsourcing Hiring - One step closer to SWEET complete automation...

It's one thing to outsource the work you need doing in your business, but its another thing to outsource the actual hiring process.

I've been hiring a lot lately, and its exceptionally time consuming.

- You've got to post the jobs.
- You've got to write the job ads
- Sometimes you need to go out and email individual candidates to invite them, or contact a lot of different companies
- You need to ask candidates lots of questions
- You need to read all their responses and filter them out to the best ones
- You need to summarize all that data and pick the best ones
and so on...

I took a big step recently and actually outsourced 70% of the hiring process. I was skeptical it would work, but it did.

It's saved me about 3-5 days of work, and left me with just checking the final small selection of top candidates from hundreds of potentials with all the info I needed summarized. It cut down 3-5 days work into about 3 hours.

It was actually pretty simple:

- Had a template for the original job description for VA to send out
- Had a list of sites to advertise on
- Had a set of questions to send out to every applicant
- Had a set of rules to discard or shortlist the applicants
- Had a set structure of what the final report for the shortlist could look like.

it took about 2-3 hours to prepare all that info, and I have it again if I need to use it in future.

I could then have more follow-up questions to be sent, or a short sample task, with further criteria for discarding or shortlisting the applicants.

I was very skeptical about this since it was for hiring a programmer and the VA had no technical experience, but with clear instructions it was easily done.

Happy it work for you! Seriously, picking the right candidate takes time especially if you are new to outsourcing. Virtual Assistants are really the best way to go in the awesome automation process. To what sites do you outsource with?

I generally advertise positions and contact potential applicants on pretty much any website I can find. eLance, oDesk, vWorker, Craigslist, and a variety of others.

The more applicants you get the better chance of finding someone great.

Hiring staff members is the hardest part of the process, so yes outsourcing and getting help with the outsourcing is a great idea. I think depends on the level of person you are looking for but it can take a lot of effort to find good people. I have 3 full time people just recruiting.

  • Oh man, congrats. This is exactly why my assistant (not VA, actual in-house) is worth her weight in gold. Once she was trained and dialed-in on what I wanted and how best to spot the "good ones" she was off to the races.

She loves doing it now. Treats it like a video game. haha.
