Im creating a video course product and I'm unsure...

Hi, I am creating a video course product and I am going to sell it. So I am looking for a way I can put videos onto some sort of domain hosted somewhere with a username/password. So I guess my questions are:

1.) Where can I host a video course?
2.) How can I host this course?
3.) Prices for the above?
4.) How can I add a login to the site?

Thanks.

    Hello Tom,

Try Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)! The cost will depend on how much traffic you will get!

A membership site would be great
something like amember or the butterfly script... maybe considering a free membership script I'm sure there's great one out there.

for the hosting part, I know some people who are doing large product launches and need a lot of bandwidth the are using http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

never used this service personally but i'm sure that other warrior could help you out on this one

    cheers

Yep Amazon would be wise, or get yourself a VPS/Dedi and prepare for a hefty price tag month to month but you're in control no third party.

2.) How can I host this course?
Most standard and commonly used to preserve quality and optimize file sizes will be .flv, there's .avi to .flv converters or if you're in camtasia make sure you export as flv not mp4.

      3.) Prices for the above?
As stated there's no standard it goes by how much bandwidth you use.

4.) How can I add a login to the site?
DLGuard.com would be my first recommendation.

      Cheers,
      Norb.
Thanks is DLGuard.com free? Or how much?

Tom, you need to go out on the web and do some research.

Basically you need a domain name, some of your own hosting, a website, a place to upload your video content to (could be your host or could be somewhere like S3 depending on how much video you have) and a way to secure the content. If you want members to sign in to see stuff, you are now looking for a membership script or plugin solution.

Perhaps you should determine your budget first, and then search for solutions to fit within the budget.

    Hi Tom,
You can host the video course on your personal website, for which you would develop a login structure (not too difficult using Javascript - there are many tutorials out there). If you want it to be more secure, you can use something like DLGuard. You could also host the video on YouTube (turn off searchability) or Amazon S3.

        Hi Tom,

You can host the videos on your own website or on a service like Amazon S3. If you don't have a dedicated server or a vps I'd suggest using S3 which is very reasonable...or dare I say cheap (price will depend on size of video file and how many people watch).

To secure the site you can use a free membership script such as S2 Member. The basic version will do everything you want and more.

          Hi Tom,

Amazon S3 is really low cost and easy to use, you can get an add on for firefox which connects you easily.

I have used html password lock in the past, it has a lot of options for passwords such as : case sensitive or not, user and password or just password..

If you get a hosting account for your main site then just link to a members entry page which will come up with the password and or user name.

Here is a link to html password lock

How is payment made? assuming it's a paid product.

You can encourage your members to download the entire course in zip format from amazons 3.

I usually have options to download all in one go or indivual zips..

As an alternative you might consider systems that expire the download link after a set period..

As fellow warriors have mentioned have a good search around..

Not entirely clear what your intensions are.

Do you want to host the videos AND let users/customers watch them online (a.k.a. streaming videos) - or you want them to download a zipped (video) file and watch on their own computer?

As a side note, related to your reply to avenuegirl: yes, WF might be the best source of knowledge... but that doesn't mean that you shouldnt' do your homework, i.e. research, read, learn - instead of asking endless basic questions and expecting to be spoon fed!

If you have a ton of video and are concerned about bandwidth, storage cost and video streaming speed, use Traindom for your infoproduct. You can upload unlimited quantity of video (in whatever format you want), videos will only available to your paid customers and it's blazing fast streaming experience for your customers.

        Hi Tom.

We all want to create a mebership site at some point so when I did I looked into a number of options. There are of course free scripts and tricks you can use, which I have tried, but these will (most probably) never be as good as the paid for options.

I have a couple of membership sites and use a different mebership script for both, here's why...

My first site, people can sign up to become a free member or pay and become a gold member. When they are members they can then download the content I am offering.

I use DLG for this and I am delighted with its functionality. It's integrated into wordpress and can automaticlly add members to my getresponse mailing list, and I like the way it keeps secure files hidden.

DLG is also great for digital product delivery.

Though it's easy to use I do have (just a little) technical knowledge which helped me set everything up and with a little 'out of the box' thinking DLG is flexible enough to fit alomost all delivery and membership applications.

It is quite an expensive script - but worth every penny - so I thought as an experiment I would try a different less expensive script on my second site....

For this site I used s2member - much cheaper - this has allowed me to use wordpress to set up a paid for site, after which members get access to a page where they can view the videos online or download them.

Though easy to use I feel the little bit of technical knowledge I have helped me set up the script to look and do exactly what I needed.

Also I did as everyone suggests put the videos into amazon s3 (use the firefox plugin) AND I make those pages secure with the s3.php script so people can't simply copy the links to my videos and steal my bandwidth.

So for simple video streaming I recommed the s2member script, but if you want a bit more power and functionality then DLG.

I have not personally used wishlist but I've seen sites that use it and I would definitely consider that too, but do look into protecting your amazon s3 files with the s3.php script

        Hope that helps a bit.

anthony has a great break down about his membership sites. Tom I think you will want to step back and think not only how to get your membership site up and running but how you can scale it up once members start arriving.

You ability to scale up in the future is what will make you the most money and keep your members loyal to you.

No matter what though I would recommend using Amazon S3 and as Anthony said the s3.php script.

I too am looking at other membership site scripts and this thread has given me a few more ideas so thanks guys.

I do the same thing you are trying to do and I use Wordpress with the Digital Access Pass membership plugin. I also use Amazon S3 to host my videos.

Digitl access pass is great for this sort of thing as it gives you a ton of flexibility. One click upsells, clickbank and paypal ready. Integrates well with your autoresponder etc. They even install it for you for free.

        Tom,

Do not use FLV. FLV is dead.

Export as MP4, both Flash and iPads can play that back.

    3) Use a script like WordPress Video Plugin and Video Player For Amazon S3 - Adding the 4th S to S3 - For "Security" to protect your videos so that they play only from your site (you get this script for free if you purchase the DAP Unlimited-site license)

    So that's basically it...

Of course, you need a payment processor too - like Paypal, ClickBank, e-junkie etc.

      @Biosclan,

DAP doesn't support phpBB yet. Hopefully, within the next 6 months. SMF at Home of SMF: Free PHP and MySQL forum software will probably come first, not sure at this time. Will know after we investigate their API at some point. Seems like a better forum solution than phpBB.

I would do a combination of S3 and Digital Access Pass..

S3 will host the videos, and DAP will let you set up a membership site anyway you want.

Drip fed content, all at once, only open for a certain amount of days... whatever. DAP will let you do it.
