Has Someone Hacked My Wordpress Login???

Hey all

Have been getting multitudes of new users registering on my article directory site and decided that I would go into the admin and see how many registered users I had, as I dont really maintain it.

However whenever I click on the bookmark, it says the saved password is not recognised. I havent changed it obviously and one thing I did notice was the bookmark address now suddenly says this

http://articlepc.com/wp-login.php?re...in%2F&reauth=1

Instead of articlepc.com/wp-login.php

I tried typing in the address manually and got the same response.

Whenever I type in a password I know it isnt, I get a Firefox message coming up saying "Do you want to change the stored password?". Now whenever I type in the password I am 99.9% sure it is, then it doesnt give me that option, which leads me to believe something is very much wrong.

Any ideas?

By server do you mean FTP client? Or C Drive? Or C Panel?

If you can't log into your WP control panel at www.yoursite.com/wp-admin, just reset the password, i.e. click on the "Lost your password?" link and follow the instructions to reset it.

Could you try setting up your email address as webmail within hostgator, and then try to retrieve your password again?

            So what was the outcome?

Was your site hacked, infected or user error?

For future reference, you can do this yourself without tech help. All you basically need to do in the worst case scenario is delete your email account, and then recreate it.

I would definitely e-mail the host. It's almost definitely an error on their end - if it recognizes your correct password (responds differently to it, as you say), then nobody hacked your account, because they would have changed that password!
So don't worry.. contact your host and they'll work it out with you.

It could have been something as simple as a user error. Guess we will never know what the actual issue was because the OP has left those who want, to hypothesize.

Apologies for the delay in getting back. Was goggle eyed by the time I'd finished with Gator guy. End outcome was he was able to reset the password for me. So was able to get in and reset password then put my own one back in.

However he wasnt able to offer an explanation on what had happened. Like devid says, it recognized the correct password (ie Firefox didnt offer to change stored password like it did for stupid attempts that defo werent the password) so it was probably an error on their part. Tho its a shame they couldnt come up with anything.

It is too bad the issue couldn't be pinpointed.

Just for future reference, make your self less visible to prying eyes...

*For your user name dump the standard, "admin"

*Your user name as well as your password should include uncommon characters such as: $ % _ # ! ? *

*You password should be at least 18 characters.
