Late to the Game on Link Wheels and Horseshoes - Good Info?

Hey Warriors!

I want to dig into link wheels a bit more. At first I heard they were the new It thing, then I heard Google was penalizing sites, so some marketers created a Break in the link making a horseshoe.

Who or where has info I can get on this strategy?

I want to try it.

"Info" is really very, very difficult to find on such subjects, Tiff.

Everyone has opinions, some of them very strongly held and vociferously argued. But "info"? Not so much.

I've found linkwheel-type structures of enormous SEO benefit, myself.

Mine are less formally structured than many, with some random cross-links but nothing approaching a symmetrical structure at all.

I don't believe for a moment that Google "penalises" sites linked to by linkwheels, and think such claims are hysterical nonsense almost on a par with the nonsense some people believe about "duplicate content penalties", "penalties for getting too many backlinks too quickly", and other such ludicrous misunderstandings. I do, however, think it's quite possible that Google (and other search engine) algorithms may well recognise something that's "too symmetrical" and devalue it (the linking structure, not the site it's all designed to "point at", of course, for exactly the same reasons that you can't really "get too many backlinks too quickly" without it being wide open to abuse!)

      ^^^^^ This...

It makes no sense for a search engine to penalize a site for something not under its control. On the other hand, it also makes no sense to reward obvious efforts to game the system.

So I believe that if a linking structure triggers warnings with an algorithm, the smart action is to just ignore the structure's links. That way, you don't risk harming an innocent party while at the same time you don't reward the guilty...

I don't believe that Google penalizes for the use of LinkWheels, but unique structures in an organised structure is what you need. The same link wheel structures pointing to your pages will eventually be ignored. You need to have authority links to your money page, and support those authority links by building links to them, making the link to you site more valuable

I guess what I need is a definition kind of ...

I need to see a diagram or something - what starts it off, where does it point (to what?), that points to what? I'm confused on it.

Hi Tiffany, Alexa and others have given great answers, but I'm like you, I need demos and pictures. Here is one video from YouTube and there are a bunch of others there as well.

All the Link Wheel demos and diagrams often show all the links going around in a circle but I do it way more random than that. I can set this all up in one long day, but then I don't publish all the Web 2.0 that same day, I save them unpublished and then go back randomly over the next week or two or so and publish them so it looks a little more natural.

I agree there's no way you're going to get penalized for this because isn't this the whole point of Web 2.0...to get the word out about something that is awesome and solves people's problems?

Tiffany: I agree with John and Alexa. All good for SEO, but you should break out of the Circle mentality.

I build links backwards, and try to never duplicate the structure.

I just explained this to someone else how I use this concept inside of the WF.

Currently I have more than 1600 posts. My signature links to my WF blog, and there is also a link to my profile with my posts.

My WF profile links to my home page, but my WF blog links to the home page of my sites, my product pages, and my articles inside of WF.

My articles inside of WF link to each other and will occasionally link to articles I have written and placed on other websites.

My articles on those other websites always link to one of my website home pages and a deep link to my site. Occasionally the article itself will link to an article written and posted on another third-party site.

All articles I write point in the resource box to a site home page and a deep link on my site.

So for this example, I have "forum posts" to "forum blog" to "WF articles" to "another article" to "another article" and to "my site". So I have five levels deep, all pointing home.

But if you are really dedicated to the process, you can build 20 or 50 levels deep. I often do.

It is all about pushing link popularity to those pages that link to your site. You will never get 100% of the link popularity from each linked page, but it ensures that more of those pages linking to your site do have real link popularity to pass back to your site.

With this system, I have thousands of pages with some link popularity pointing some link popularity home.

The only place in this system where I am not linking home is in my WF sig block.

Just in new sales on my WSO and some top rankings in Google for my article threads.

I can track WSO sales to both, and I have already earned back the money spent on the Article Forum.

    Tiffany,
I employ something similar but I call it a perimeter site defense. I use it to fortify and strengthen the position of my mini-sites which I call forward operating bases.

Both of those entities linkback to a main base website with the sole purpose of turning it into a big money maker.

I'll see if I can dig up one of my digrams that I built for my site structure.

    Respectfully,
    Tim

Just trying to keep it real and break this stuff down into terms I know and can use in order to develop a fully functioning course of action (COA) which can then be followed through a series of operations orders (OPORDS).....lol

            Hey Tiffany

Had the same questions about this when I first heard about link wheels too.

This site covers the topic pretty well and has some diagrams to show how it works exacty, check it out.

If google was to penalize sites for bad Backlinks, you'd see services for bad Backlinks everywhere (if there was money in it - it would be offered), i think the fact that you can't find theses services around is proof Google doesn't do it. At most, what google can do is ignore the links.

best advice is, before you do anything, make sure you understand the basic's. Would suggest learning about dofollow/no-follow links, linking structures (like link-wheels / link pyramids), and long term linking (aka link velocity).

That should be enough things to dig though to get you reasonably up to date, would suggest using the warrior forums search before Google though as all the information you'll need is right here on the forums in droves.
