Hosting Camtasia videos on amazon s3? - is this the right procedure?

I made a rough camtasia video (mp4) which is output in the camtasia player, loading the mp4 video from my desktop (the video is on the desktop)

can i upload this mp4 on amazon s3, and get viewers to watch this video using the camtasia player

(Which I assume i will have to upload the files onto my webhost server- and point to the Amazon s3 video file) ?

Is there a tutorial which shows how to do that? or do i just upload all the files camtasia has made to my server, and connect them

The files:
-The html file
-the JS Script
-the XML config

#amazon #camtasia #hosting #videos

You can use the camtasia player with Amazon S3. You will just need to upload all the files to Amazon S3 as you would to your own server. And then make sure all the links are pointing to where all the files are now located on Amazon s3.

or just the mp4 video one?

+ In an example, what would be the URL of the video page then?
(can you make an example please)

Upload all the files, grant the correct permissions, unless you are restricting access, and then you can either embed that video in an iframe or you can just link directly to the video as a webpage, either method is effective, however, keeping the visitor on your website is usually perferred, so I would design the interface so that you can serve the video from inside your website,

If you are using wordpress, there are methods of doing this too.

It kinda depends on how you plan on delivering the video...

Maybe you said but I missed it. Are you wanting to simply provide a link to your viewers and have them watch your video in their browser or are you wanting to put the video on a website like a WordPress blog or static site?

I made a short video for you to help answer your question

Click Here to play the video

Let me know if this helps - if so, I would not be against you hitting the Thank You Button

            .
Hey, i wish the Video to be on a static webpage of MY hosted domain (one of the pages, i will make with a webpage maker)

I will then want this VIDEO link url, and give it to my Email subscribers

            www.MyDomain.com/video1
            www.MyDomain.com/video2
            www.MyDomain.com/video3
            www.MyDomain.com/video4
            www.MyDomain.com/video5

so my subscribers click them links above, hosted on my domain and watch the Amazon s3 videos (which i am trying to play using the Camtasia output method)

Would I be better using FLV Videos hosted on my server?

My 8-9 videos are just under 10 mins long each. (about 10mb in size)

should i just convert them into flash videos and host them on my server? (as somebody suggested) ?

-as i heard Amazon s3 storaage has a slow buffering time.

If i host flash videos on my server, could it slow down if 100's of subscribers see the videos at the same time?

                  Hello to the forums!

I'm actually from TechSmith (I found a tweet to this page while monitoring our channels) If anyone ever has any questions about Camtasia or any of our other products (Snagit, Jing, Relay, Morae, Etc.) please feel free to shoot me an email directly at j.skole [at] techsmith.com or tweet at me directly @JordanSkole or tweet at any of our social media channels we should respond as quickly as possible.

As for the answer to this we have done a couple tutorials that involve pushing content directly to a private server. The write ups are here:

                  bit.ly/alXJv7

and there is a video here:

                  bit.ly/gPcaRd

Both these videos are for Jing (its our "lite" version) but the process is very similar in Camtasia. If you have any questions please let me know!

I haven't had any problems with Amazon's buffering time. And if you are expecting a lot of views of the videos at the same time, your server is going to be a lot slower at delivering them than Amazon S3.

Converting the video to FLV will not solve your problem. FLV and MP4 are just different video formats. Here's what you seem to be overlooking.

The video file, whether FLV or MP4 is just that, a video file. You can upload that to your server but no one will be able to watch it unless you also upload a video player to play that file.

It's the same as if you were to click on a pdf file. Unless you have Adobe Acrobat Viewer installed on your computer, that file will not open.

So there are two parts to this. First is your video file and second is the video player. You seem to be having difficulty getting the video player part to work.

                1. Create a new bucket in your Amazon S3 account. If you're using Cloudberry which I already recommended to you, just right click in the white space and click on 'New Folder'. Cloudberry refers to buckets as folders just to make it easier for people to understand. Choose a name for your new bucket and click enter.

                2. Once your folder is setup, double click on it and now you are ready to upload your files. Upload the video file to that bucket. You can just drag it straight from your desktop into the program like you would with an FTP program. Wait for the video to finish uploading.

                3. You will then need to make sure all the ACL permissions are correct so people can actually view the files. Amazon makes most files secure by default. So right click on the file and then click on 'ACL' > 'ACL Settings'. Then in the top box click once on 'All Users' and once that is highlighted, make sure in the bottom box that the checkbox next to 'Read' is ticked. This is just telling Amazon you want everyone to be able to either download or play that file.

The file is now ready to go. If you want to know the full url for that file, simply right click on the file and select 'Web Url'. It will now display the full Amazon S3 url of that file.

                4. Next you need a player for the video file. At this stage, if you send people to the link of that file, they will only be able to download it - not watch it. You can either use EZS3.com which is much easier if you plan on uploading a few videos every now and then. That's what I use and recommend to you.

If you want to use the Camtasia video player, you will need to upload the video player files to Amazon and change urls here and there so they all point to the new location on Amazon. If you're a beginner though, I suggest using a hosted video player service like EZS3 because it's much easier.

Hope that helps. There are plenty of video tutorials on this stuff all over Youtube so if you still have problems, head over there.

Cloudberry Explorer is a third party tool that is not part of Amazon Web Services but it is kinda like an FTP client in that it is used to transfer files from your computer to the Amazon S3 account.

Cloudberry Explorer comes in a freeware and a pro version. Here is a link to the Cloudberry Labs website where you can check out the free and the pro versions.

Once you are there, on the right side of the page you will see some links to watch some videos I made for them a while back and learn all about the setup and use of Cloudberry Explorer.

They have a fantastic support staff that are lightning fast to reply to your questions.

It has worked thanks, and the videos are great.

Which video (if any) shows how to UPLOAD a Whole Camtasia folder
(mp4, xml, flash file, javascript) to the Amazon s3 folder,

But not only upload it (as i can do that) - but the video/instructions should show how I can get the Video URL link from amazon, which i can give to my subscribers, so they can watch the video?

so i need a video to show how to create an amazon s3 URL link, which has my hosted Camtasia video -> for my subscribers to view.

Which video would that be, if any ? - or can What i want be done even?

if so,would the URL have "amazons3" in it ?

As I have said a number of times, Amazon S3 is a place to host your media and other files. You can upload your video files to S3 however if you give people the Amazon S3 link to that video, all they will be able to do is download the file, not watch it. Once you have your files on Amazon S3, you will need to change the links in your html document that came in the Camtasia folder, and those links should all now point to the files on your Amazon S3 server.

Once you have the correct links in that file, you then upload the html document to your web server like you would any other time using your FTP. And whatever you decide to name that page and where-ever you decide to put it, that's the link you will give your customers.

As I also said, there are heaps of videos all over Youtube and the Internet that explain how to use S3 and Camtasia. You obviously find it easier to learn from videos so rather than us all trying to explain this method in words, go and have a look around - that's what I had to do to learn this stuff in the first place.

Open the folder Camtasia gives you. Get rid of the xml file, that's not even needed. And don't upload the html file because you will be uploading that to your server. Go ahead though and uplaod every other file from that foler (minus the html and xml) and put them on Amazon. Once you've done that and changed the permissions of every file like I told you in the tutorial above, you then need to open the html file in an html editor and look for all those files you just uploaded in the html code. When you find them you now need to change them so they are pointing to the correct files on your Amazon S3.

Amazon S3 is just a file storage service. Just do exactly what you would do if you were playing and hosting this video on your own site, however the links will be pointing to S3 not your own domain.

Amazon S3 is just a file storage service. Just do exactly what you would do if you were playing and hosting this video on your own site, however the links will be pointing to S3 not your own domain.
Thanks, that has cleared up alot of confusion.

I have hosted the entire contents of the Camtasia Video, all the files Besides the HTML, or the XML (although you said the XML file is Not needed to be hosted,,,,,, I have seen that the XML file called "MyVid config" actually has the location of the Amazon s3 Mp4 file which is to be played, like this.....

(the Config XML file for my video contains this)
                                  <uri>http://s3.amazonaws.com/MyBucked/MyVideo.mp4</uri>

so would I be transfering that XML file to Amazon or not? - as it contains the location of the video? (above bold link) or do any of the other files contain that link?

+ Just a quick query on the editing of the HTML file,

I am changing the url of everything which says
src= (change this to the NEW amazon hosted source)

and changing every src= to the NEW location of the amazon server, correct?

and then I know i am hosting this HTML file on my server.
                                  Signature
I Have to say a Massive...THANK YOU to every Warrior who has helped me, and thanks to every warrior who helps me in the future...

Oops, yes you will transfer that file as well. My mistake. So just transfer all the files from the Camtasia folder, minus the html document. Once you've uploaded those files make sure you change the permissions like I told you before. In Cloudberry just right click on each file one at a time and click on ACL > ACL Settings. Then click once on 'All User's at the top and when that is selected, make sure in the bottom box the checkbox next to 'Read' is ticked. Once that is ticked just click 'Apply' and then do the same for each of those files.

They are all now ready to go.

Yes, so open the html file and change all those links that are pointing to the files you just uploaded to Amazon S3. To get the new and correct links for each file, open Cloudberry and right click on each file and click on 'Web url'. A box will pop up showing you the new location of that file. So just click on 'Copy to Clipboard' and then go and find that file in the html document, and replace it with the new Amazon S3 link. Also change the link to the video file that's in the xml document.

So, for example, you might be replacing the link myvideo.mp4 to http://myfiles.s3.amazonaws.com/myvideo.mp4 or whatever your Amazon link is.

Once you've done that, upload the html file to your server and let me know how it goes.
