If it's one thing I know for certain, it's don't poop where you eat.

Buy domains separately, and get your hosting separately.
Use Godaddy or Namecheap for domains and Hostgator (baby plan) for hosting.

Don't forget to search for coupons before you purchase. You'll always find some (on Google).

If they were the only two choices on earth then Hostgator.

If there was another choice left on earth then neither.

Hostgator has had multiple security breaches lately.

In one such breach one of my employees who also works with multiple other companies who hosted at host gator had to contact HG because of a security issue where hackers hacked Hostgator to get into their client's hosting accounts and install malicious script.

When he contacted HG he was told by their staff to leave the malicious script active until they could check into it.

This is not the only security issue... but too many red flags make HG an absolute NO GO for recommending to anyone.

Additionally, though they may have changed their policies in recent times when I contacted them to ask about scaling and burstability when a business exceeds the resources available at HG they said that they simply shut the client down... no scaling no courtesy. There may be other unpublished limitations such as mysql querie limitations, concurrent connection limitations etc.

While I am not aware of security issues at Godaddy... as a host they are even worse with more unpublished limitations to their hosting plans including as little as 49 concurrent connections allowed on their economy plan.

When searching for the right host, even an economy host, ask the hard questions and if they cannot answer make sure you do not give up until they connect you or get an answer from someone who can answer your questions.

Ask questions about scalability (whether you can upgrade your plan without interruption), mysql querie limitations, concurrent connection limitations, whether bursting for bandwidth is available, whether they have had security breaches compromising customer's hosting accounts in the last 2 years and exactly what they have done to ensure it does not happen in the future etc.

Don't be afraid to ask the hard questions and demand accurate and complete answers... be specific and tell them:

"If you do not know do not guess... I require a definitive answer from someone at your company qualified to answer these questions before I can entrust you with hosting my business."

btw... there are other options for economy hosting accounts that are worth considering:

If I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely pick Hostgator. Not only is Godaddy's control panel confusing and different from the industry standard cPanel, their basic hosting is very limited in terms of bandwidth and storage space allowed. They have multiple hosting plans and it can be a little confusing to pick the right plan for your needs. (Godaddy has always been confusing when it comes to offering multiple choices and upsells, especially for newbies.) Hostgator would be my top pick, hands down.

For hosting Hostgator (no the reseller). GoDaddy use a complicate hosting panel (Drupal) and many programs don't work like any common hosting.

There are other cheaper and good domain providers for domain. GoDaddy is just the most popular.

I never hosted with Godaddy but I've heard a lot of bad things regarding their hosting services. On the contrary, it is one of the best domain registrar to buy domain for very good price. I suggest to go to google.com and research different web hosting and look for the one that meet your needs. You can simply google "best web host 2010" and you will find what your looking for. In addition, read the reviews and pay attention to what the current and past customers are saying about the web host service. Try to read all the reviews before committing to any of their services and make sure that they have more positive reviews than negative reviews.

Why is the choice just between these two when there are so many other reliable web hosting companies out there.

I personally use Bluehost and have never had a problem with them. I have never had a negative experience with their Tech Support either. I also like Westhost as well.

I very much dislike GoDaddy mostly because of their ridiculous checkout process (which is effective in helping them turn a nice profit). I also dislike their marketing and ads (but hey, sex sells doesn't it? Even when it has nothing to do with web hosting or nameservers or SSL certificates.)

I have a client's website on HostGator right now and I deleted the default domain parking files and uploaded their website files but it still shows the parked page. What's up with that?

About your last point -- it usually takes a bit of time to "propagate" and should be fine if you've pointed those pages to Hostgator.

That's what I do too. Works great and is cost-effective.

I've heard good things about Bluehost too, but haven't tried them out personally. I CAN vouch for Hostgator thought from personal experience. 24/7 friendly tech support rocks. And it's pretty userfriendly to begin with, plus the price is right.

Also, it offers a monthly payment option, whcih some other otherwise reasonably priced hosting companies don't.

I also find GoDaddy support outstanding -- especially when it comes to domain names, but I still won't use their hosting.

I worked on a project for a client once where I got an insider's view into how Godaddy hosting works... it's tedious to work with, and it couldn't do a few very basic things (one involving some specific PHP) (even after talking to their friendly support person, who admitted that they weren't set up for that kind of thing), so I moved it to Hostgator and the problem was solved.

Also... compare the prices on hosting! Especially after the first year ;-)

And, as Sal pointed out, it's always a VERY bad idea to have domains and hosting in the same place!

      Elisabeth

P.S.: About GoDaddy's sales sequence when you buy a domain name... Actually, I find it very interesting -- especially the wording! I.e., "activate your domain" must be very tempting to a lot of people -- it implies you have to have that! I think I can learn from them...

Same here. NameCheap for domain registration and HostGator for web hosting. I'd stay clear of GoDaddy although that's where I started off. Too confusing and too many unwanted up-sells.

I just read that Hostgator is preparing to open their Domain Registration service called LaunchPad in a couple of weeks. They would have a single control panel to manage domain and hosting configurations with the same quality of customer support. Interesting!

      Here's the email from Hostgator:

As many of you are aware, we announced that we would be coming out with our very own, integrated domain registration service. It's taken us a little bit longer than we anticipated, but that's because we're wanting to make it right! We are working incredibly hard to bring this to you as soon as we can and we anticipate this being available within the next several weeks (beginning of 2011).
This new domain registry service is going to allow you to register, transfer and manage your domain names AND your hosting all from within one control panel.
We are also working around the clock to bring out our own domain registrar, LaunchPad (Watch out GoDaddy!)! We are anticipating LaunchPad's release within the first quarter of 2011. LaunchPad will provide all of the same support and reliability that HostGator customers have come to expect, as well as allowing clients the convenience of registering and managing all of their domains right along side their hosting. We know this is going to be great for us as well as our customers, and we simply can't wait.

If you want a good domain service, go for GoDaddy as they offer most of the domain extensions. They are not cheap. They have domain auction place and when there's a new HOT domain coming, godaddy gets it first.

But I buy all the domains from NameCheap as they offer the domain in almost half the price. Only bought one domain from GoDaddy (the one in my signature) because it was not there in NameCheap.

Now if you want hosting, GO AND BUY HOSTGATOR -they are the best.

I got the pack which offer unlimited domains and hosting space, and pay $10 monthly ($9.95) they have good customer support and they are real tech people who solve problems.

I have many domains and wordpress sites and server never went down. All those domains and websites for $10 a month -priceless.

Also, it's usually not a good idea to have your domains and website hosted at the same place. It's better to separate the two, if at all possible.

    I am personally using HostGator
I pick Hostgator because the service is the best,I repeat THE BEST(for me atleast)
GoDaddy is a good choice but sometimes the service there is really bad
I once contacted the support,it took them 7 days to reply(not kidding)
With HostGator, your account is activated within 10-15 minutes
Plus, they have a live chat service
and you could start a hosting plan for just $22
    Hope the info is usefull

I host my sites at Hostgator and register domains at Namecheap. I think it's all about personal opinions but I've never had a problem with and recommend the above names sites.

I bought hosting from hostgator and like their reseller plans, but that is just me. Godaddy is not on my favorites list if you know what we mean.
