I've just used my merchant account return function for the first time. I usually prefer to send checks for refunds but this time it wasn't practical. Am I correct in assuming that a return is not the same as a chargeback? I could find no indication that I would be charged for the return nor penalized in any way whereas a chargeback usually results in a high fee plus it doesn't look good on your record. The return was so easy I'd rather use it than checks in the future, as long as there are no negatives attached. |

The credit card owner starts a chargeback. It's completely different then making a return. Returns and credits are normal. |

Returns are fine with your merchant account. What you do not ever want to do is give a refund by check if the person paid by credit card. They could still turn around and do a chargeback and you will be out two times. |
