Role of exact match domain?

Hey warrior's I was wondering how much weight does an exact match domain carries.

Some people say its not much important some say it is.

My whole motive is to start a site that deals with almost every kind of indian stuff like indian clothes, arts, sculptures everything.

and I want to name it on my mother's name or generic name such as Indianarts, so will it affect my ranking badly?

A huge advantage for domain names that match a niche or keyword/phrase is visitor recognition and acceptence. By that I mean they can easily relate to the site's name as a way of knowing you guys are on the same page.

If you were looking to get your toes straightened after a career in ballet would you rather go to a website like toefixers.com or a website named jimsgaragedoorrepair.com.

Naming your site to get rankings is one thing, but choosing a name that people can instantly relate to for what they are looking for is even better. That can be a niche specific name, or a branded name like Google, Amazon, Yahoo, etc.

What you want is repeat visitors and your name should try and help that become a possibility.

Your area of interest seems to be an excellent example of creating a brand and becoming a leader in the industry through personal branding in the minds of your customers.

It's the harder way to go, but if you succeed, the game is over and you can start living.

You should find some short, easy to remember name (from what I understand, you could easily use some Hindu words as you're targeting the Indian market, so there should be no problem in picking the desired .com domain)...

Personally I experienced exact match domains very useful for SEO. There is actually even a ebook from gene on exact match domain finding EMD with local businesses such a Burnaby Lawyers as in my sig because it ranks relatively easily.

Also many business bases on EMD. There was a warrior who mentioned he has 235 sites making $4-50/day!

Exact domain name will HELP SEO, but it doesn't mean if you use generic name will hurt your SEO.

Let's take the big name like AMAZON.COM or EBAY.COM .. there's nothing on their domain name show anything about "buy online books" or "auction site" whatsoever, but it still get TONS of Traffic from Search Engine.

At the end of the day, what most matter in SEO are:
    1.RELEVANCY - Good Content, LSI
2.POPULARITY - Proper amount of Backlinks with anchor text
3.NATURAL - Keep adding content and more backlinks over time

Just 2-cents from me. Good luck with your website!

It sounds like your site is a general interest site that will sell a veritable cornucopia of items of Indian origin, so I think it'd be hard to find one specific keyword term that people searching online will use, that would effectively cover everything that you sell.

So I'd not even worry about trying to find an exact match keyword domain, because in all probability this does not exist in your particular case. I'd go with creating a catchy and brandable domain name that will make your business uniquely stand out, i.e. something like ebay, amazon, yahoo, netflix, etc.
