Calling all newbies! What is your biggest challenge?

This post is for all beginners, newbies, noobs, and those who can remember back to that time when you were the most challenged with getting started with business online.

What is the biggest challenge you are facing, or have faced, as a beginner? I see posts all over the forums here from newbies but I am trying to see what it is you are most challenged with.

For instance:
- Where to start in general?
- Which model to choose? (e.g. affiliate marketing, product creation, ebay, etc)
- Technical difficulties? (e.g. Not understanding how to set up websites, blogs, etc?)
- Time, motivation?

Tell me where you, as a beginner, are having the biggest challenges. List one or list them all, I'm very curious to know. There is also a poll so I hope you will all participate.

Thanks for your input!

Hello.....by far my biggest challenge is technical. I have been setting up

my blog for about a month and a half...I already have articles written and

saved on my desk top. The problem with me is that I get extremely frustrated when it comes to the technical stuff and will just stop

whatever I'M doing....hence the reason for the long starting time.

    Regards.....

My biggest challenge is two which are interlinked.

I'm new to internet marketing so I have a steep TECHNICAL learning curve to overcome every step of the way. And learning takes TIME. Every time I start to do something the first time I have to take out a lot of time. I feel a strong urge to spend some money and automate the whole process, but I don't have that luxury either.

Right now I'm in the link building stage for my affiliate site. I've been in that stage for a month. I'm continuously trying to build links but I don't see satisfying results. So I always have this fear if what I'm doing is right or not.

I think the biggest challenge for a newbie like me is to overcome the fear inside: "Am I doing this the right way? Will I get the results I'm looking for?"

        Hey Rob,

I feel you man, not knowing this "skill" sucks, but it's actually quite easy to learn.

        What you do is you:

        1. Download a free Website Editor called Komposer (it's simple to use and just awesome)
        2. Write some very basic and simple text for your download page
        3. Then in the middle of your page type "yourdomainame.com/ebookname.pdf"
        3. Once your done, call it "download.html"
        4. Upload it to your FTP client (use Filezilla, it's free, fast download and just amazing) by clicking public/html file on the "right side of Filezilla"
        5. click on the folder with your "website name"
        6. Then find your "download.html" file in the "left side" of Filezilla where your files stored on your computer are and double click "download.html" to send it to the folder of your website name
        7. Then find your eBook or free report and upload it by double clicking it to send to the folder with your domain name
        8. Finally, type in yourdomainname.com/download.html
        9. And you're done.

I know this can be confusing at first, so if you have any questions just shoot me an email:

        Good luck.

For me the problem is information overload. It is like needing a drink of water for a tickle in your throat and the only option is a fire hydrant.

My challenge has been that I need to pick a market and go with it. I have had to force myself to avoid the WSO forum and focus, focus and then focus. Thankfully, all the gurus have started pimping all these blind copy rehashed products so my Inbox is getting a rest and my distractions have diminished.

With focus I started seeing success. Trying to do too many things at one time left me with dozens of unfinished projects.

I still have to fight the urge to try something new and have to force myself to stay committed on my current projects.

I recommend to Newbies, to spend some time doing research and then STOP reading and start doing. That is the only way to make some solid progress.

1 or 2 COMPLETED projects will serve you much better than 10 half done projects.

It was a toss up between "Getting Started" and "Lack Of Good Information".

There are many methods and ways to make money online. For newbies it is really easy to become overwhelmed.

Alot of newbies get hooked into some "Get Rich Quick" product without knowing that it takes work and time for some of these products to work and others just flat out do not work.

They end up spending alot of money and become frustrated and quick altogether.

My issues are money to get started up. There are so many software packs and information that I want to buy and money for outsourcing. It's been a real challenge with very little money. That's why I do the banner thing on the side, I use it to put back into my efforts.

I put where do i begin. I have been in web development since late 2005. I have a plan and have picked about 5 niches that im going to break down into sub niches. I picked my niches based on low to moderate search results with not much competition. The only thing is I dont know is, if my niches will actually sell. I really only wanted one or two niches, but thought it was best I didnt put all my eggs in one basket. I figured if I could get a couple of sales from at least one of my niches, I could then start to pound it.
It was nice finding this forum, its full of great ideas and strategies.

    Awesome thread you've started DJ.

This is a problem that I'm sure 99.9% of all newbies are struggling with and trying desperately to overcome...

...well, for me when I first started in IM, 2 and a half years ago I was what you would call an "opportunity seeker" looking for the quickest and easiest way to make money online. And so "Information Overload" a.k.a. "lack of good information" and "getting started" was my biggest challenge.

But after many failed attempts and countless number of hours learning from a select few honest and successful "Gurus"/Experts and through my own research I was able to be overcome this "disease" and become a "strategic entrepreneur" by focusing on ONE method and putting all my effort and time into that. And this method was "list building".

I am so glad that I have now become a "strategic entrepreneur" and stop becoming overwhelmed with "information overload" from the myriad of ineffective scam products out there today.

So...for you newbies to IM just STOP chasing those "get rich quick" schemes and FOCUS on ONE method that you like or feel will be profitable and go with that for a couple months or so and you WILL see results.

"Information Overload" is a disease that is spreading like a wild virus and must be STOPPED to see any sort of success.

YOU have the power to just say NO. Once you do this you will feel liberated and become highly productive in your business.

Great thread DJ. This will be very helpful for many newbies on the forum.

    Hey!
This is a great idea to find out what the most common problems are.
So for me, my biggest challenges still are:
    1. The fact that I live in a country with a weak economy and don't have money to start and not even offline businesses to offer services to.

    2.Getting backlinks.
I know how to, but i can only get a couple per hour...which is very frustrating.

Knowledge and content has never been my problem!

    I hope my feedback helps.

I'll have to say money. I've been at my new job for nearly 3 months and have been trying to put aside money for IM, but I've had to bail out a few relatives with financial problems and I got several expenses of my own to deal with.

Hopefully next year I can really start getting serious again. I already have my set plan, but I need the money to outsource it.

Gosh, reading over this list, I've realized that I've had issues with almost every one of these options at some point!

At first it was complete information overload, and I had no idea what to begin with. (Article marketing? Ezine advertising? Amazon comissions?) The list of possibilities went on and on, and every time I discovered some new method I'd stumbled upon, I'd get caught up in the excitement and feel even more uncertain about what to stick with. The same thing went for niches too; I just had trouble focusing.

I've also struggled to find enough time to get a project done, enough money to cover basic investments and expenses, and the motivation not to give up when it gets discouraging. I'd say that it's mostly a three way tie for me between money, time, and information overload.

(...By the way, this is my first post as a Warrior member, and it's very nice to meet you all! I'm really excited to become a part of what seems like such a helpful and fun community of fellow IM'ers, both newbies and veterans.)

I'm easily distracted (It's 12:30am should be in bed but for reading stuff on the WF and looking for somethings online) when I could be focusing on creating something worthwhile, or learning from the myriads of reports I've bought.

Goal setting is a weakness; and putting things off!

I have been wandering around in cyberspace for about 5 years now, dabbling into free stuff, especially trying to make things happen. Especially experiencing that excitement of the first cheque.
I have found the best programme for me that is teaching me loads and loads of good information from building an easy website with an optin form etc.

So to answer the question given, will have to be the technical side of creating a website from start to finish.

I suppose you can say:'Building the Engine'(your website). Once I got my head around the basics, everything else falls into place.

Initially it was learning how a web business actually worked - i.e. fitting all the pieces together - building a website, using an opt in form, building my list, having a downloadable giveaway, and having a product to sell or to be an affiliate for.

Now Kompozer, Filezilla, Aweber, Clickbank, are all part of my normal vocabulary, and to think I had never heard of them a year ago!

The next challenge - which I am currently working on - is getting more traffic to my websites. As I see it, this is a never-ending task, because you can never say you have finished. Initially I was a bit of a scattergun, but now I am concentrating on a couple of areas at a time.

A big challenge when first starting out was time management and focus. It was so easy to get distracted and go off on a tangent.

And of course there is conflicting advice, information overload, and knowing what to believe about IM. Thankfully after a few false starts, I found genuine helpful information and support to get me started.

I think the biggest problem newbies face is information overload.

    My best advice is this...

Pick a small niche, small traffic.

Then do backlinks, article marketing etc

Watch it grow in the SERPS.

    Take notes of what worked.

Once you master that, move to other other keywords with more traffic.

    Rinse and Repeat

I am glad to see so many people responding as I know this will help other beginners realize they are not alone in the challenges they face. There are 1000s of programs, methods, systems, etc. I think the biggest piece of the puzzle is figuring out that there is no ONE way to do this and that the worst thing any beginner can do is spend all of their time 'wandering'.

If I could give one vital piece of advice it would be to pick a method and take action with it. Do something. Build a site, promote through twitter, create a video, create an ebook, anything is better than doing nothing. Even if you fail, you get the hands on experience of doing. This is critical. You can't learn through reading alone or watching every program, you have to DO IT because everyone's experience is different, even if they are following the same plans.

It is easy to get distracted, or procrastinate because you don't understand a system. But, if you seek it out piece by piece you will quickly begin to put it together. You can only do this by DOING.

Also, one great lesson I learned is you DON'T need to spend a ton of money on systems, programs, ebook, products, etc. Most everything is available for free online or very inexpensively. Your first choice (ESPECIALLY BEGINNERS) should be the free stuff until you learn the lingo, the processes, and the various business models. Until you have that down, you can't make good decisions on products, scripts, and programs to make you money online.

Great stuff here and so much thanks for all of those who have been in this awhile and posting their own lessons learned and advice. I hope this thread continues to bring in activity and help to the newbies.

      Thanks All!

If you are reading this, the very next method you read, I want you to start! Go, do it!

There is no 'best' method. And what you are earning doing nothing, is precisely zero - you are not earning experience, you are not earning knowledge, and you most certainly are not earning money.

It's the time it's taking. I am fortunate that after only a couple of months of bright and shiny objects I have found a program that fits my personality. But everything takes me 3 times as long as I think it should. Content creation is much tougher than I thought it would be.

Now I am working at monetizing and the learning curve is pretty steep - the nuts and bolts of it and especially the aesthetics. Then there's the fear (near certainty) that it won't be done well enough to do its job. Doesn't help that I decided to start out with 3 sites and 80 keywords in the same niche.

I'll get through it, and I know the next one will be easier, and the one after that. But it sure does wear a guy out, and some days the motivation gets dinged pretty good.
