Hosting Question -- when should I upgrade?

I have a Wordpress site hosted through HostMonster and I am doing a joint venture in which I will be getting many thousands of hits to my site in a day for a few days in a row.

I have just the standard hosting package. Should I get a dedicated server? And if so, what does that entail?

Or is there some other sort of hosting upgrade I should get instead?

As you can see, I don't know much about hosting and I need some help!

Thanks.

P.S. I'm looking into this because my site is down and HostMonster customer service tells me it should be back up within 20 minutes. I'm hoping this sort of downtime is rare.

    Hi Billy,

It's definitely annoying when you site goes down. However, I've had my site go down even after paying $174 for a pretty decent dedicated server with a high ranking web hosting company.

For the average website, shared hosting is perfectly fine. Even if you are getting a few thousand visits. However, if you are getting a few thousand visits and have some serious resource-intensive scripts running, it can cause some issues.

What I would recommend is this - contact the hosting company and give them an idea of what level of traffic you are expecting. Ask them if your current hosting account can handle it. If not, then you can consider upgrading. Also, there's always VPS that's cheaper than dedicated, but does give you more power. I'd discuss those options with them.

    Hope that helps!

That helps a lot, FreebieGuy, thanks.

I just called customer service at HostMonster and he says I'm fine up to 1,000 to 2,000 visitors per day. But my promotion could get a more traffic than that.

He also said that HostMonster doesn't do VPS or dedicated hosting, that I'd have to get that elsewhere.

Any recommendation on where I get something like that? Or is it one of those things were there's hundreds of companies offering that?

      Thanks again for your help!

I'm definitely a fan of Hostgator. They are who I recommend to all my subscribers as a good hosting company for a number of reasons:

        1. I've been with them for a decade and haven't had any significant problems.
        2. I've tried a few others since, paid significantly more, and always end up going back to them.
        3. They are good at what they do.
        4. They provide excellent customer service (based on my experience).
        5. They have a bunch of possibilities for expanding and upgrading.

So hope that helps. Others might have different suggestions, but I only recommend what has worked for me

Thanks for that. I figured HostGator and HostMonster were comparable, but I guess not. The customer service at HostMonster has been fantastic, and they have Cpanel and all that, but I now see the benefit of being able to upgrade! Thanks again.

I'm a huge Mediatemple fan. I ran 140,000 visitor a day CPV campaigns on my mediatemple account without a hitch.

Downtime is terrible! I hope your host fixes the situation ASAP, Do they have an uptime warranty? It sounds like your business is doing well and you now need a fault proof system, As your business grows I would recommend you grow right along with it. Examine your resources are they maxed out? Its always beneficial to think of the capacity your system needs at the present and may require in the future. Also always examine the way your bandwidth is charged or itemized in your hosting plan, make sure your traffic patterns are not costing you extra in any way, depending in which way your host charges bandwidth. As far as what type of hosting it really really depends, look at the prices there are so many variables from processing power to storage capability. Cloud VPS seems to be the big thing now but again concentrate on what specific resources your business needs. Also remember backups! It huge you never know!
