probably a dumb question, but I have seen several references to Web 2.0, and haven't got a clue to what it is.
Can someone provide a simple explanation for me please?

thanks

I've always considered web 2.0 websites as been "one way user generated content" websites, in saying that, i wouldn't consider communication sites (like forums for example) to fit into this. (examples would be hubpages, squiddo etc)
Also there is a web 2.0 design concept, which is less junk, easy to use, and generally "good looking" (beauty is in the eye of the beholder right?).

This thread will quickly tell you what it means - whatever you want!

For some it's about the content (eg user generated). For others it's a design style (eg glassy buttons and big fonts). For others it's a combination of both or something else.

    Insert your own definition here

"Web 2.0" has embodied quite a bit of definitions. When asked about it, I like to reference the value it gives to the end user, as well as, the data that can be obtained by the website owner. Web 2.0 utilizes people's most fundamental drive to interact and be vocal about things.

Look at how Amazon.com has brilliantly integrated review functionality. People can interact and communicate about a product. In a way, this inherently makes Amazon more efficient, as they can weed out the bad products simply by leveraging user feedback. While it might 'seem' like this would affect their business, it actually helps to develop a more loyal and trusting customer...loyal to the brand and willing to spend money.

Wow Neil, small definition but to the point. I've been trying to understand what web 2.0 means for so long. Now I do: USER GENERATED CONTENT + STYLE
      thanks

Web 2.0 is when you operate a website where other people sign up for accounts, and then they operate their own little personal space on your website.

Like Facebook. You sign up for Facebook, and you get your own little personal space on Facebook, where you can post whatever you want within the bounds of the Facebook terms of service.

Web 3.0 is where you don't so much operate a space as post little snippets of information. Like Twitter; you have a personal page on Twitter, like web 2.0, but in the main your presence on Twitter is a series of short tweets.

Essentially, web 1.0 is a deliberate archive of information that you own and control. Web 2.0 is a deliberate archive of information you control but do not own. And web 3.0 is a deliberate archive of information that you neither control nor own.

And web 4.0 will be a deliberate archive of information that controls and owns you? Lol.

Web 4.0 will be an accidental archive. Nobody will actually own or operate it. You will just say and do things which are propagated up to the cloud by automated processes nobody controls or owns.
