How do I make sure nobody pre-orders my domain?

It just occurred to me that people can pre-order (back order, whatever you'd like to call it) domain names so they receive ownership at the end of your term.

How do I prevent this from happening? Is it literally just a case of making sure your term never ends? Or can you get some sort of protection?

    The only protection that I know is to make sure your domain automatically renews.

    Decent domain registrars certainly give you plenty of notice that a domain is about to expire. From Namecheap, for example, you'll get emails right up to the date of expiry. For GoDaddy you can set to auto-renewal.

    Then, if you do happen to go past the renewel date, you have a couple of weeks in which you can still renew before the domain becomes available on the resell market.

    yes automatic renewal - also you can set up your email notification so that it lets you know a good month in advance ...

    To make sure that your domain won't be bought by someone else, you may register it for a longer term (e.g. 5 years or so) and/or have it automatically renewed. Your domain registrar will notify you quite a number of times prior to the expiration and after the expiration of your domain so make sure you check the e-mail address that you submitted to them when you first purchased your domain.

    I was also worried about this.

    So the best thing is to set your domain to auto renew so that when the domain is about to expire, you will be charge a certain amount so that you can continue to own the domain.
