How do you guys write a press release?

I want to write some press releases mostly for backlinks and SEO. These are going to be for my affiliate sites, but I have been checking around and apparently you are not allowed to blatantly advertise for your sites in a press release?

DO you guys recommend any programs or examples of how you would write a press release for affiliate sites?

  • Find a nugget about the product that is newsworthy and elaborate on that. Scour around and look at good press releases by large corporations so you get the gist of the "voice" they use in their materials. This will take you a long way into crafting a release that is much less promotional and more objective.

Simply type in google.com "press release samples". You will get some good samples to work with. Hope this helps. Good luck!

The best way to learn how to write a press release is to copy the format used in successful press releases. That does not mean copying their words, but following the style.

The way I learned was by taking a good release and rewriting it with my information. By the time I was finished, the release was 100% different, but I understood what should be in each part of the release and what the structure of a good release is.

Do not assume that the releases you find online are good. Some are, many are garbage.

There are a number of books about writing press releases, and many of them include samples. Start with one of those.

Writing a good press release is not as easy as some people would like to believe it is. I'm no expert, but I can offer a little advice based on what I've learned
      1. Make it newsworthy.
      2. Make the headline and intro get right to the point. Tell them what the story will be about, but also make sure it grabs their attention and makes them want to keep reading.
      3. Keep it concise. The PR should only be as long as it needs to be to get your point across.
      4. Avoid hype and any uneeded adjectives.
      5. Focus on one story only.
      6. It should read like news, not an advertisment.

Thanks for that link. I've never heard of that before, but it looks good. I'm going to read it tonight

This site was the first one I ever read on the subject, and there's some straight-forward advice there:

I would also like to add that warrior Dana Willhoit (Dana_W) is the press release expert around here, and I would suggest reading some of her past WF post. Also, take some time to look at her blog, as there's a lot of good information on it: http://www.thepressreleasesite.com/

They are no longer "press" releases. In the business, they are either media or news releases. Releases go to lots of outlets where they have no press (like radio, TV and blogs).

Beyond that, the key thing is finding some aspect of your work or product that is actually newsworthy. Most people send stuff they think is interesting, not something an editor or reader would find interesting.

Also, many people send blatantly promotional material, and editors trash that stuff instantly. They are not looking for ads in written form, they are looking for material that will capture the interest of their readers.

You need to understand who a press release is for.

A press release is for staff reporters at a news outlet who have a deadline and need something to write about fast.

The more your press release sounds like something their editor will like and want to publish, the better off you will be.

Write like a reporter, not like a marketer. Speak about your company, products, and services in the third person. Highlight the things you might want to read about in your local newspaper.

Keep in mind that you may end up in print, not online, where clickable links are just plain not happening.
