Is everyone on here only Marketing "Marketing"?

What I mean by this is, I was under the impression this was a site for the discussion of employing marketing techniques over the Internet to support/sell your business' main product. However after reading for quite a while it seems more that people are here to market their ability to market?

Are there any other people here who are working for a business that offers a service or product completely unrelated to the act of marketing itself?

I'm not working for a business but I own my own business and my job is selling. I use my marketing skills on all sorts of things such as my websites, my gaming, my social networking etc. I have sites with subtle marketing and sites with slap you in the face stuff. It's all a part of the whole.

For example my site that offers free Christmas carols has very little to do with selling although there are a few sidebar links that can be clicked. I have a number of other info type sites as well.

Not all marketing has to be so blatant

I think that most people have sites/businesses in other industries, but in the act of learning how to market those businesses they tend to learn the ins and outs of internet marketing, then sell what they've learned... But the majority of people in this forum came here to learn marketing I believe (mostly on the internet)

      Gotcha

Can anyone recommend another good forum that is a bit more general in terms of marketing? I haven't been able to find anything really along those lines from Googling around, any help would be appreciated, thanks

  • It's true that a lot of people are and it's a little frustrating that people that have never marketed out of the "internet marketing" niche are trying to "market" to others on how to "market to the internet marketing" niche.

Kind of incestuous, but that's just the way it is.

Haha...nice question, this was my 1st impression too when i 1st started internet marketing.

However, most experienced internet marketers will involved themselve in some other internet business like business directory, social media, online gaming, and so on...

you see many people market " marketing " because it is something more easy to start with, most other types involve huge development cost.

but i started by selling physical stuffs online, the cost involved for stock inventory is quite high too.

Yeah, I understand that people have other "branches" of their online marketing, but I was more talking about people performing marketing roles for bigger companies rather than individual entrepreneurs/start ups

Well, I know that many of the members here market in various other niches besides internet marketing, but the majority of the marketing content here caters primarily to individual entrepreneurs and not bigger companies.

However, there is a newer forum section here called 'Offline Marketing Discussions' which may be more up your alley, as that focuses more on providing marketing services to small and also medium sized businesses.

Just because a lot of people do sell "marketing" they also sell lots of other products. It's about being diversified. Also, rather than sifting through hundreds of threads for info, you can buy a guide on it for $11 and save the time.

Also, if the guide sucks, just ask for a refund.

I come from the offline marketing world and I have also been involved in sales of many different types of products and services. My most successful online businesses have nothing to do with online marketing.

If you can't understand how to market online it's going to be pretty difficult to sell anything; the one thing we pretty much have in common is the desire to make $$$$$$$. Thus, many of us are looking for way to market our online businesses more effectively and economically.

You're right Geezer... many are on here to 'market their marketing' (especially to newbies) but not all.
I've handled internet marketing/website management for estate agents, therapists, retailers and more. I also have a number of my own sites.

I find this forum invaluable in terms of info/ideas/techniques all in one place.

Every time I ask a question (techie, marketing, whatever) on WF a bunch of friendly, helpful people dive in to help.

I think the WF would be useful to any biz trying to use the net as part of it's marketing efforts...

I'm not here long enough to say what people do or do not market but here's what I can tell you...

Smart business people go where the money is. Smart business people also go where the customers will continue to buy over and over again.

Every person wants to make more money. Most people think that the internet is where you can easily make more money quickly.

Put those two things together and I think that's why you see a lot of people marketing "marketing".

I tend to believe that people are mislead by all of this. The data shows (US Census) that only about 4% of total retail sales come from the internet. Yes, this number is growing but not at the pace anyone thought it would. In 2000 it was about 1% of total retail sales. In Q2 of 2010 is was just about 4%.

I think a lot of people are chasing their tails trying to get a slice of that 4% while they completely ignore the 96%.

But like I said, smart business people sell what people want to buy and what they will continue to buy over and over again. If that's "internet marketing" then so be it.

My most profitable niches are in areas other than Internet marketing.

Same here.My primary business is a retail store that has nothing to do with marketing; however, I've found that the information here helps my retail marketing efforts. I've gleaned some good ideas for marketing that I otherwise never would have thought of.

I think a lot of people are chasing their tails trying to get a slice of that 4% while they completely ignore the 96%.

So true, but for me, I had to consider overhead and start up costs when I launched my business. I initially had planned to open a B&M store. Had I followed that path, I wouldn't have the income I do today. Not to mention, I've never been big on the idea of having employees, lol. I prefer to work at home... all by my lonesome!

I'm glad I read this thread. I was starting to get the impression that most of the marketers here and elsewhere were just trying to market their marketing programs and such. After looking around though, it's clearer that people are also involved in many more business opportunities than just marketing.

I agree it seems like marketing marketers is the only thing going on but I look at this place as a watering hole. Come by, see if there are new trends, new ideas, new tools. After I see what there is to see, I go back to battle. People come up with new marketing ideas and they need to be shared, so we evolve according to the evolution of the internet, people, and products. They have their job, others need them to have ours. Pick and chose wisely, learn when you make mistakes and adopt new methods that work.

There are actually a LOT of people here that make money in non IM niches. However - because so many newbies come here asking questions it draws out the seller in many people who see hungry customers and want to be the one who sells them what they want. If you just ignore all that stuff and ask questions about things you want to know - you should still find that you get access to the people you're looking for. We're here and often just don't get involved in the IM merry-go-round of constantly repeated information and thinly disguised pre-sales conversations. Andy

Many newbies jump right into the Make Money Online niche and never really explore other options. I mostly sell websites and domains. A lot of successful people here have service based businesses, such as writing, virtual assistant, etc. There's so many other options to choose from that are easier to make money with than the Internet Marketing niche. Not everyone is going to be the next Kern or Chow or Problogger, but I think newbies are under the impression that it's a fast track to riches.

Products or product related sites only here. Too many people pushing Make moeny online offers and courses don't know what they are doing - it is morally questionable in my oppinion. With products, It is an area I know and connecting consumers with Physical goods from brick and mortar companies is easy on the conscience.

This is funny. When I saw the title of this thread I knew I'd see a thread full of signature links "marketing marketing"-- and I did. The Internet marketing business has always reminded me of people who've needed psychological help, gone to a shrink, then decided they want to go into psychology, too.

I think it takes a bit more imagination than some people can muster to apply IM techniques in unknown territories, so they stick to what the teacher's doing. That's too bad, because the money in IM is minuscule compared to that of many of the more mainstream niches.

Andy Henry gave the best answer so far, IMO, so it's almost pointless for
me to add my 2 cents.

However, I will say this. I sell IM and non IM products. I'll sell just about
anything if it has value and there is enough of a demand for it.

More importantly, I know how to sell just about anything.

A lot of people ask, "If you can make so much money selling stuff, why not
just do that and not sell how to make money products? Doesn't that
        create more competition for you?"

This is the biggest misconception and misunderstanding by many people
in relation to making a living online.

For example, if I sell a book on how to write a sales letter, how does that
create competition for me? There are a gazillion products out there
to write sales letters for. Just because I sell a book on how to do it
doesn't mean that the person is going to write a sales letter for a product
        that I am also selling.

Same for any "how to" info product. There are so many markets and niches
that using a "system" or "method" for promoting something doesn't
necessarily have to have any impact on what I'm selling.

If that were the case, then all the people who came before me would now
be out of business because I've learned all that they know and can now
sell the same things as them and thus, hurt their income.

The idea of this is ludicrous and how anybody can actually believe such
nonsense is beyond me. But they do and they'll continue to as long as
their minds are locked in what is called "scarcity" mentality.

In other words, if too many people know how to do something, that
        something becomes worthless doing.

It becomes worthless doing when people abuse the method and then
sites, like Google, Twitter, EZA, etc., have to ban the use of the method
or give strict penalties for using it.

Article marketing, as long as it's been around, is still effective.

        Why?

Because good, relative content will ALWAYS be in demand.

What will become ineffective are ways to do that article marketing that
violate sites' TOS or other policies.

Some methods will be effective for a time until somebody at the site(s)
catches on and puts the hammer down on it.

But legitimate methods of marketing will rarely become ineffective
simply because somebody teaches it to somebody else.

        Absolutely absurd notion.

If it were true, everything that I am doing right now that I have taught
to others would be totally ineffective for me.

Not even close to being true...mostly because most people are too lazy
        to implement the strategies properly.

But that's another can of worms that I really don't want to open up here.

But as Andy said, because the new people coming here are specifically
looking for methods that will help their business, it brings out folks (like me)
who have something to share. And no, I have no shame in admitting that.

If you want an altruistic society where we all help each other for
absolutely no monetary gain, then go work for a charity and hope that
somebody comes along and offers to pay your mortgage and food bills.

Until that day comes, there is nothing wrong with legitimately earning a
living selling "how to" information as long as that information is relevant
        and helpful.

That's the part that way too many product creators (IMO) leave out and
end up creating crap just for the sake of selling it.

Another can of worms I don't want to get into.

Bottom Line: If you have a problem with people being here because they
sell "how to make money" products, then don't come here. Go someplace
else where everybody just gives of themselves freely 100% of the time.

Because if you look around...this very forum is filled with ads that are
making the owner and its members money.

The last time I checked, there was nothing wrong with that.

At least not where I come from.

I've never sold an IM product. I either have totally passive sites or e-commerce.

I'd guess that 95% of the people here likely make MOST of their money doing IM. Sure, they probably have other sites, but this has proven to be the most lucrative. And the WF is the place where everyone hangs out, so naturally it's where they are.

The other 5% are the ones that can sell in any market, but the IM market is lucrative and it's interesting. So here they are.
