If I were looking to register www.mydomainname.com but it was taken. Would it be better to register:

1- www.emydomainname.com
or 2- My-Domain-Name.com

I suggest the www (dot) emydomainname (dot) com. According to my experience, the hyphen is not good for SEO purposes at Google.

The non hyphenated ones are always good. From my experience the hyphenated domains can work as good as the non hyphenated ones if you can do some seo.

But not that pleasing if you have more than 2 hyphens. Before you go with hyphenated domains, check if you can get mydomainname . (org). That works equally or much better than . (com) domains from my experience.

But whichever ones you choose. You can pretty much get the same results, if you can build lots of links. Easy to reach top when the keyword is in the domain. hyphenated or non hyphenated, both can be seo'd to the top. I've done it with both, hyphenated, non hyphenated, .com's and .org's.

The tricks I follow to get the joined keyword with no hyphens are.

      - Try to add plural forms of words eg: bonus, bonuses
      - Try to add "my" before the words
      - Add "site" or "portal" at the end
      - add "e" before the domain etc etc...

      Just use your imagination...

      Hope it helps...

I agree with Shannon, have your keywords first and another word at the end.

I would try to search further to see if the .org, .net or .info (or even the more obscure ones like .tv or .biz) TLDs for your keyword domain are available.

These different TLDs do not negatively impact your chances of ranking for the keyword in question, so do not rule out the other TLDs just because they're not a .com

As far as I know, .com has higher commercial value, so stick with .com if your intentions are to sell your site in the future.

If you want to keep if for yourself and work on it, than any TLD will probably suffice (with the prefered order of .com, .net, .org and others following though).

If .com isn't available and you don't really want to mess around with words at the beginning or end then i suggest going for .org then .net as you can still overcome a .com in the search engines.

It's all dependant on what you want really and if you want to add a word at the beginning or end then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

If it's a specific keyword then i always like to put howto or howdoi etc.... before the keyword. Or even think of 4u at the end.

Thanks for all the great advice. I know when I use Market Samurai and do a domain search it it gives a higher keyword density rating if you put a letter before the domain name as opposed to putting it at the end. It gives a 100% density for hyphenated names.

I just have heard negative things about hypens. I guess by reading the posts, as long as you have your main keywords you'll be fine.
