High returns, high competition VS low returns, low competition

I'm having a bit of a problem. I want to get started small in a less competitive niche but in my niche ( dog training) I see why it's less competitive because I can't find any good affiliates to offer. Should I find a long tail IM niche keyword? or make less from a niche I am passionate about and want to stay in?
P.S. I'm not saying you can't make big money in the dog training niche, just asking how IMers make money on the niche's that affiliates don't pay as high.
