INTERNET MARKETING

Hi.
I have been browsing these forums past few days, found lots of good information but nothing that would relate to my site.
I have a classifieds site that is in need of marketing. I do not sell ebooks (not yet at least) or any other Special Offers that warriors promote.
Please visit my site and let me know if this forum is the right place for such site?
I am just starting out as a new webmaster and had this great idea to create classifieds website, something similar to craigs list but without the adult content and it is limited to a region (not world wide site).

  Your site looks simple, but that's what's good about it. The information is presented in a clear and organized way and this makes your site easy to browse. I like the three columns; they add structure to the site. The white background gives it a clean look. Only the logo needs to be touched up. I suggest you have it redesigned by a professional graphic artist.

  excellent input, thanks guys, Yes the logo is my creation and graphic design is not my best suite. I even have problem choosing the right combination of colors.
  Now for marketing. I have many great ideas. Because site is local only to NYC area, even advertising the site on NYC buses would be a great idea (i think) but also great expense and probably little conversion.
  Also newspapers and magazines local to the area sound good. But these are generalizations and simple ideas.
  My primary right now is to have the site populated. It doesn't have content because the site is new plus I don't want to copy other sites classifieds (scrape off craigs list).
  I am running little adword campaign (first time user, steep learning curve) but out of 1000 impressions 1 click (keyword: nyc classifieds).
  One major hurdle is that nobody will post anything or use my site if it is empty and it is empty because nobody posts anything.
  The way I see it, there are two marketing strategies. One is to promote and advertise my services/web site offline, walking sales, and Two is to have online presence and campaign. For direct traffic perhaps I can run ads in newspaper classifieds, plus i probably should write and submit some articles.
  Please advice, proper marketing strategy or should i scrape it all together. I strongly believe there is market for classifieds especially since craiglist is getting such bad rep. As you can see my site doesn't even include Adult materials and adult material is significant part of craigs list business. Also NYC area has 20,000,000 people so I am sure getting 2,000 users with proper marketing should not be that hard.
  My first goal is to populate my site with classifieds and ads without stealing it from other sites. I am thinking perhaps run little campaign as business listing so bussines owners can add their store or product to services category, then slowly real estate will get filled out and for sale category.
  Excuse my rumbling, I am all over the place with ideas.

  Hi! I just popped over to have a glance at your site, and I don't think you should scrap the idea yet, especially not before giving it a chance to take off.
  
  I wonder if, regarding how you could potentially get people posting without stealing classifieds from Craigslist, you could actually use Craigslist to encourage people to post on both sites to increase their post views. That's exactly what people want: they need as many people as possible to see their job opening, or item for sale, or apartment for rent.
  
  You could go to the NYC section of Craigslist (since it pertains to the geographical location of your site), and tell people in a post something along the lines of:
  
  "Do you want more people to see your (items for sale) (apartment for rent) (job posting) (etc.)? Copy and paste your post to top1classifieds dot com, a free classifieds website for the NYC area" (and link directly to the main page of your website so that they don't have to search for it).
  
  (Of course, you'd have to make sure not to overdue this and be accused of spamming the board: check their guidelines to make sure that you're not doing anything wrong.)
  
  So many people still use Craigslist that it's a good way to get your information to a lot of people who looking for your service exactly: a place to post their classifieds.
  
  I'd also recommend seeing if there's an online directory of classifieds sites-- especially by region, and then registering your site with them to get more traffic.

it is difficult to find a forum that will focus on classfieds marketing and this forum doesnt seems to do it either. Don't get me wrong, this forum is overwhelming with information. Most of it applies to my portal as well.
I actually expected little bit more replies but seems classifieds is a niche not everyone is familiar with.
I am starting to write articles and then I will focus on keyword optimization. Furthermore I will try to get involved with this forum and see how it goes

Do local SEO it's the best way to get people to start posting on your site. Marketing is what your site really lacks at the moment, and all sites do have to start somewhere. I suggest that you first start with keyword research to target those who are really looking for the services that your site is offering (ads).

Classifieds business is very competitive.if you can make it popular as craigslist then you would certainly become rich.For this you need to prepare a plan to make popular then tons of hungry advertiser run to put their things on your site.it is hard but possible.Many bright people come to this forum and give great advises and also read old threads here.
