Hey Guys,

I found a bunch of links added to the footer of my site awhile back that someone had obviously hacked in and put there. I found em by going View->Source.

I restored a backup and made sure they were gone from any source code I could see. But when I do an outbound link check I still get links to quoteclickinsure.com and intexasinsurance.com showing and I certainly am not linking to these companies to my knowledge on purpose. (I checked my approved comments to make sure they weren't coming from there either).

The adding of these links corresponded with a HUGE rankings drop for me, but I have no idea how to get rid of them. Can't find them anywhere and I'm not the most savvy guy when it comes to the back-end of these type of sites.

Any suggestions? Ideas?

Out of curiosity, what backend are you running? And chances are your outbound links just hasn't been updated yet. What're you using to check them?

Asking what you are using to check your backlinks to find those outgoing links that go to someone else like Yahoo site explorer, seo spyglass, back link watch, etc.

Im using Wordpress. I just used an outbound link checker that I found on Google.

outBound Links checker Check all outbound links of your site

I thought this was in real-time and didn't need time to 'update' my site?

  • Are you sure these weren't embedded in your theme the entire time? Probably by the theme developer. Some of those guys pull some shady stuff sometimes.

Can we get a link to your site and what theme are you using? I'd like to check the source code to see perhaps that they may been there in the theme from the beginning.

First check your css files for any buried links. Actually, go through any of your theme files and look for links.

If you can't find anything, look for anything encrypted in the files (just search base64 on this forum to learn more). It is possible to compromise a theme this way.

This is the best reason NOT to use free themes unless you have gone through them line by line.

In free themes they always have links in the footer.php file.

Just delete them by going to Appearance > Editor > footer.php

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but the theme is flexibility who I think are fairly reputable? They're recommended enough anyways. I've gone through the footer and looked at the other files through the wordpress editor and don't seem to be able to find much.

Should I be looking through the theme files through my file manager instead? Would this help?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Go to you site then go to option in browser to view source. Do a seach for the links and find out where they are being inserted.

thats the thing, they don't show anywhere when I view source. I found a bunch a few weeks ago and deleted them but there are still more links showing in the outbound link checker
