Best way to get them to open an email after opt in?!

I'm noticing a low open rate even on the first email for some of my free giveaways for various niche sites and I'm wondering what type of "Thank You" page text has gotten you the best open rate?

Thanks!

You mean they aren't even opting in to get your freebie? Or after they've got your freebie they don't open any subsequent e-mails?

Are you making them double optin? It doesn't sound like it. You may be getting a lot of junk email addresses submitted thus the low open rates. You need to make it clear that access to the freebie will be given by email - so they know there is no point entering a fake email address.

If that's not the problem, then I've had success with simple things such as...

    "here it is..."
    "ok, you're good to go..."

Also, make sure the 'from' name of your emails is something they will easily be able to recognize as coming from the site they have just signed up on.

Using a stop page after your squeeze page telling them to go check their email will work well. Another thing to do is to test different subject lines to see if some are performing better than others.

He's asking about thank you pages, so I assume he can't get people to do the double optin. They fill out he form and never confirm their subscription.

    Typical problem:

    1) The freebie is not a good enough hook, so the extra opt-in step is not taken because there is some lack of trust / care

    2) They wonder why they have to double confirm, or think they're getting added to a spammy email list. TO fix this try making a screencast video showing what the email will look like in their inbox, and SHOW THEM that there will be an unsubscribe link in every email in case they are not interested in staying on your list

    3) On the "Thank you" page offer them some value right away (some tip that's really cool, etc). Build the trust right away. Tell them you'll send more tips following the freebie.

Make up your mind - which one do you want him to do? Never give people more than one thing to do at a time - in most cases this will result in them doing nothing at all. I am not talking about the OP I am talking about the optins.

Only have one thing on the thank you page. If you want them to double optin then it has to be a quick video showing them exactly what to look for and how to confirm their email. If you are running a single optin list (which is becoming more popular these days) send them straight to the good stuff.

This reply may or may not be correct. Bottom line is that you NEED to establish trust. I gave you TWO separate ways to do a better job of that. It's very easy to split test these. I have a split test running on my "thank you" page right now. One page offers a very firm "Wait - you're not done yet" message in bold red font. The other variation is a more laid-back message of what to look for in the inbox. It looks like they are generating the exact same results (+/- 2%). Next step will be to test the use of audio (autoplay vs not autoplay) and also video.

Just make variations and setup a test in Google website optimizer. It's free
