So after researching using MS I have found what I beleive to be profitable keywords. The dot com,org and net have been taken but are not generating large amounts traffic (im assuming for not being optimized).

I can get my exact keyword domain but with a dot biz,us or dot info, would this be a wise choice or should I alter my potential domain name? thanks for any input.

Move on to a different domain name. Google gives higher rankings to domain names with dot com, net and org. You'll be in a disadvantage if your main traffic source is organic traffic.

If you really must you could possibly try a dot us. Also have traffic sources from videos and images.

Where is most of the traffic originating from? Could you use a country specific TLD? Or how about using a close match, or topically relevant domain name. An exact match .com is simply not essential to your overall success.

Personally, I would move on. From several past experiences Goggle just doesn't seem to rate a dot biz, info or us domain as highly as a dot com and unless the dot com etc has received absolutely no optimization at all, you will never pass them in the rankings.

Go to Site Explorer - Yahoo! Site Explorer and enter the dot com etc URLs in the top 'Explore URL' box, then in the results, select 'Only This Domain'. This will show you the links to the URLs and will give you a good indication of what you have to beat. Plus, as I find, you will need to overcome the Google bias as well.

Did you trying adding additional modifier words in front or after the keyword? You will definitely be able to get a domain that way.

I would move on as well.

Are any of the hyphenated versions available? I know some people think hyphenated domains is a bad idea but I've enjoyed some good success with them. If it is purely for SEO I think they are worth using.

I've also seen hyphenated domains used with good results. I'd buy both get the dot biz,us or dot info in the name you've already chosen and then go ahead and brainstorm another new domain that is available as a .com.
We always try to buy .com domains but the thing is you can forward the other domains to your main one at any time. Domains are cheap in the grand scheme of things. And if your site becomes popular and you haven't bought the .info .net versions of it other people will and they'll capture some of your traffic.

Great input everyone, thanks.Adding the "s" to the end usually works for me but in this case the ending keyword is plural, maybe make it singular? "What are your guys/gals thoughts on putting an "e" as the prefix in the domain name?

Only put an "e" as a prefix if it makes sense. If your site is "books.com" then "ebooks.com" is fine, but if it is "bestbooksever.com" then "ebestbooksever.com" would make absolutely no sense.
Make sure it makes sense in the context of the site!

Or you could put HQ after it. I.e yournichenamehq.com

      Something like that?

I wouldn't necessarily move on unless the .com/net/org have a decent amount of links to them.

HQ stands for headquarters.. this only works if your website is kind of representing the headquarters of your company.
It might not make sense if you don't have a company, just a few items.

There are several different prefixes and suffixes that can be used. I would try to choose a phrase that makes sense. Choose a phrase that someone might actually search for. Also, many times you can rank the exact match phrase with dashes too (your-keyword-phrase.com) if the .com, .org, or .net is available.

BUT, if this longtail keyword phrase has a lower search count, then it might be best to forget it and move on to a new search.

    Just my 2 cents...

Google could care less what extension you use. Except country specific for
country specific type of websites looking for country specific traffic.

Dot info can rank high as well as anything else.. Just do a search for any
      variation of google pagerank.

I think this domain extension thing is the biggest myth going now on the WF.

Hyphens don't seem to bother Google at all, in my experience, and it makes it easier for the user to notice the domain name when browsing the search results.
