Rare Post By Ken McArthur: Getting Cash When You Need it NOW!

Hey Folks,

It's been ages since I've posted anything on the Warrior Forums - even though I've been a member since 2003.

But ... the closing of Michel Fortin's Copywriting Board sent me this way and browsing through some of the postings made me want to continue a conversation that I just had with my Impact Protege mentoring clients.

I think that it would be great to discuss the subject right here where we can ALL discuss an issue that comes up from time to time for EVERYONE!

That issue is ...

"How do you generate cash quickly when you need it RIGHT NOW!"

I always tell my mentoring clients to focus on the BIG ROCKS or said another way, the CORE elements that are crucial to success in solving any given problem.

In the case of cash flow problems some of the BIG ROCKS might include:

1. CASH (You can't solve cash issues without generating cash.)
2. TIME (It won't solve your cash issues if you don't get the money in time)
3. COMPLETION (If you don't finish anything, you won't solve the problem.)
4. GETTING ENOUGH (If you don't make enough money, the problem isn't fixed.)

In other words, your solution needs to generate enough money to solve the problem, and be completed in the time you have to work with.

There are also some key factors that I think are important in solving a cash flow problem.

First is a mind set issue ...

If you don't have the right mindset then I think you will limit your possible solutions. In fact, you might even give up before you start.

Here's a question that I would encourage you to ask, that ensure a great mindset.

"If I COULD accomplish my goal, what would have to happen?"

In other words, if COULD make $1,000 by Friday, what would have to take place for that to happen?

- Maybe you could get one person to give you $1,000 for something.

- Maybe you could get 10 people to give you a $100.

- Maybe 100 people to give you ten.

When you break down a problem into simple tasks, it makes a solution seem a lot more doable.

Then you need to look at all of the resources that you have right now, because ...

"Leverage is CRUCIAL"

We all have assets, that we can leverage right this instant, that we aren't even aware we have.

- In many cases we discount their value.

- Sometimes we can leverage resources that don't even seem to relate to the problem at all.

- Sometimes we can sell, borrow, barter or loan resources to give us cash flow.

- Sometimes we can cut expenses and generate cash.

My Impact Protege Clients came up with LOTS of examples of ways that they have personally generated cash when they needed it almost immediately.

In fact one of my clients gave an example where she had to generate thousands of dollars in a matter of hours -- and did it successfully.

What are YOUR stories of how you generated HARD COLD CASH when you needed it in a HURRY!

You KNOW you have stories on this one! After all, we've all been in a cash crunch and so far every one of us has survived.

This is your chance to tell about it!

All the best,

Ken

    Ken,

Many times people mistake a perceived lack of money, or a money shortage as needing to find money to take care of the problem.

The first step is to determine if that is indeed the case.

Often its not really a problem of money, or lack of money or a requirement for money to solve the problem of a perceived shortage.

    It's a value exchange.

Value is more important than money or the equation of dollars and cents.

What must I do to increase my money so that I can do such and such with it, is coming from a premise that money is the solution.

Income does not automatically tie to out go.

That being said, when a cash exchange is a requirement, I prefer to exchange services for cash.

The reason being, is that when I exchange services for cash, that in it self creates a a greater foundation.

    Great point Mark,

If you think about it, NONE of our problems are cash problems.

Who needs a piece of paper that's already been printed on!

What we need are solutions to other problems, like having enough food to eat, shelter from the cold or just an encouraging word!

    Thanks for the input!

    All the best,

Ken I love the way you put that. That should clear things up for A LOT of people who are experiencing money problems and don't know what to do.

That's a profound statement and for many people that's a GREAT place to start.

Ask yourself "what do I need this cash for?" Make a list.

Then see if you can trade your services or something you have to the person who can give you what you want or need in exchange.

Most internet marketers can also do really well offering their services to local brick and mortar business owners.

Most small businesses have no idea how to market themselves on the internet, know they need some kind of internet presence and won't think twice about paying someone with some expertise $500 to $5,000 to do it for them.

The average Warrior Forum member has more than enough expertise to be of tremendous service to small businesses.

You might actually help them make some money instead of shelling out a small fortune for web companies who give them a website that does very little for them.

I have a long list of people who've simply gone and talked to small business owners and made $500 to $2,000+ in their first week or first day out.

The market is very hungry and for most small business owners $1,000 is just not a lot of money for something that's likely to make them a real return in sales and profits.

Now if we combine BOTH the ideas I've mentioned...especially with Christmas coming up...perhaps you can talk to small business owners and offer them your internet marketing services in exchange entirely for gifts you want etc etc or for a large portion of the price.

      Here's a real no-brainer deal.

If a business owner is selling a product for $1,000 and his cost is $500 he's going to look favorably on ANY deal where you pay him $500 and give him some internet marketing services.

You save $500, do some work that's a piece of cake for you (maybe just set up a form on his site to collect email addresses) and he gets this service for free in effect because he's purchased the product and $500 and passed it on to you at $500 AND got some internet marketing services as well.

This is even more powerful than you might think because you're building a genuine business relationship here.

This could lead to paying work, referrals, testimonials etc etc.

Put simply...don't pay out any significant money without first thinking...can I trade my internet marketing services for at least part of the price of this product or service?

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

I love leverage! I've been using it on a minimum scale so far ie I want X so how many Y's do I need to sell to get it and then go from there. I have a long way to go yet with my baby leverage system.

    Hey Leanne,

So many times we don't consider leverage when we try to solve problems. If we actively considered all of the resources that we have to leverage we could do amazing things!

    Thanks for the input!

      hi Ken,

I'm sorry to say I have never come across your name before (possibly come across your work without knowing) however sometimes you can read a post and instantly tell how knowledgeable someone is and if they actually know what the hell they are actually talking about.

In this case your words seem to ooze wisdom so with that in mind I will be on the look out for more of your posts.

To add to the actual OP I'm sorry I have no emergency cash methods, I wish I had.

      thanks

I like to promote products that are about to launch as an affiliate to make some quick cash because of the fact that many of these products have low competition and may have hype from other affiliates. Usually a few days process before I make the cash though.

          Hi everybody,
Reading all the stories here, I realized that I'm a real old fashion woman.
It never happened to me that I have been in a money emergency without having money, and it is not because I'm rich. In fact I believe that my income is much less than most of the members on this forum. But maybe due to that fact, I made up my mind to be proactive.

We all know that from time to time emergencies just come from nowhere, and money doesn't come from nowhere as easily as emergencies. So I have as my first priority to put aside every month something for saving. That saved me many times, and gave me also the opportunity to help others.

In addition I don't buy anything I cannot afford, which means, even if I buy something in payments, I have already the money for all the payments, but I just don't want to spend it all at once (because I prefer to enjoy the credit and the interest on my money, when there is no interest on the payments), in this way I avoid debts.

I hope that can be helpful, even though it is old fashion.

Yes. This week I found myself in need of $250 due to an emergency which caused a budget shortfall.

I have a handful of IT consulting clients left from my consulting days - they don't call often enough to make it a full time business, but have occasional need. I knew if I put myself in front of their faces, I'd get enough business to meet my need. So...

I baked cookies and delivered them to their offices.

      A. It was an excuse to visit
      B. They were still warm from the oven
      C. As a rule, guys don't bake cookies, so it kind of makes me stand out.

I more than made up for my need.

Side note: If my lists were large enough, I could do the same thing with an email. All I did was put myself in front of my customers in a way that made them feel lie they should reciprocate by giving me business. The real trick would be to convey the chewy goodness of a warm oatmeal raisin cookie in an email.

    Hey Semmy,

I think it is a GREAT story! So many times people don't leverage the resources that they have, but you took it a step further and leveraged resources that you were MISSING.

If you don't have language skills finding someone who does is very helpful. The one thing that I repeat over and over is ... DON'T DO THIS ON YOUR OWN.

For my first info product I had over 50 people helping me.

I couldn't have done it without them.

It wouldn't have been NEARLY as good if I HAD done it on my own.

To this day, that product sells for $1,497, but it never would have happened without the help of so many people.

We often forget that MANY people are willing and able to help us when we need it most.

    Should you expect it?

Never expect that anyone owes you, but be prepared to be surprised.

MANY people will give you help when they DON'T OWE YOU.

In fact, people die for people they don't even know every day.

I'm constantly lifted by the fact that people give so much more than we could ever imagine.

Sounds like you could use a little personal validation yourself.

    Guess what. YOU ARE AMAZING!

I just added a short video to my blog that might help you realize how important you are:

        Hey Ken! Jani here...

Here is my story of how i generated over $2,304 in cash in 8 days even though i only wanted to initially generate $1000.

This was about a year ago.

It was 3 weeks before my vacation was due, and i had lost $1000 due to believing something that someone told me online.

(They told me they would sell me 10 i Phones for $1000)

...And me being who i am, i fell for it, thinking i could be one of the first people to sell the i phone and make a a nice chunk of change.

Anyway, after i sent it off, i basically never heard from him again.

So i was left stuck, with no vacation spending money.

So i was in a desperate situation where i had to generate $1000 FAST, otherwise i would have NO money to survive while on vacation.

So here is what i did to generate that $1000 (actually a little more)

        Step 1:

I looked around forums to see the problems that people were facing in the IM niche.

I then went over to a PLR website, and browsed around for a good e-book which had PLR rights (private label rights).

I found a great e-book which was on the subject of web 2.0 marketing, and at the time i did this, Web 2.0 was a hot subject as you probably know.

        Step 2:

I made some friends on forums such as Th Warrior Forum which i just joined at that time.

I spent a few days networking with some people in the forum.

I also made a post in a few forums saying that i am giving away a free review copy of my new Web 2.0 marketing guide.

24 hours later I was swamped with messages in my forum inbox.

At this point i knew there could be potential for at least some of the people who messaged me, to become JV partners after they read the guide.

So i replied back to all of the people who messaged me and told them that i would have the e-book ready in 24 hours...

Then i also mentioned at the end of the message that if they like the e-book and were interested in becoming on of my 'EXCLUSIVE' JV Partners to earn 65% on each sale then to message me back.

        Step 3:

All i had to do was change the sales page a little, put my picture on it, my name etc.. and maybe change the copy a little to suit myself.

(Note: It's better to completely change the look of the sales page when selling a PLR type product)

I then messaged back all the people who wanted a review copy, and gave them the link to the download page of my e-book.

        Step 4:

This was the exciting part because around 8 of the people who i gave a review copy to, actually messaged me back saying that they would love to become a JV Partner and promote this e-book to their list.

        Step 5:

i set up an account with PayDotCom so i could attach the affiliate system to it, set the payout to 65%.

        Step 6:

i decided if i wanted to definitely make $1000 then would probably want to add a OTO upsell on the back end.

So i got another PLR e-book (PLR e-books sell for as little as $1 on certain PLR websites)

I found an e-book that was on a related subject of Web 2.0, which was video marketing.

So i added this to my sales funnel, so after someone bought the front end product, before they went to the download page, they would see this one time offer.

        Step 7:

        Pricing:

I decided to price the front end e-book at just $37 and the OTO upsell at just $17.

So this means that when JV's sold a copy getting 65% commission, i would get around $12.95.

However they did not get any commission on the OTO upsell of $17.

        Step 8:

I messaged all affiliates the JV information of how to get their affiliate link etc.. and told them the launch date.

I also wrote a few pre written emails that they could use to send to their list.

(at this point i was still early in my IM career and was not that good at copy writing)

        Step 9:

        Launch Day

This was around 5 days after i began by the way

here is the most exciting part!...

all 8 JV Partners sent the email to their lists.

I was fortunate that some had fairly large lists of over 20,000!.

And to cut a long story short, after 3 days, i had made over $2,304
in sales, and that was AFTER i paid out affiliates!

I had also built a list of buyers as well because before customers were allowed to access the download page, i made it so they would have to opt in.

So i had made over $2k and also built a list of buyers who i could market to in the future.

I now had Enough spending money for my vacation!

Here's what i wana tell you guys,

        if you need emergancy CASH.

        it CAN be done.

BUT - not if you just sit there and wish and hope.

You need to TAKE ACTION and MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I spent more than 12 hours a day during the whole week of putting this PLR e-book together. But it paid off in the end.

I hope you got value from this story.

        Thanks

Well, I just recently needed to generate $2885 in about 3 weeks. I did it (with the help of my husband), but it wasn't easy. We've been renting a house for the past few years, since only breaking even on the sale of the last house we owned. However, our landlord informed us a few weeks ago that he was losing the house, and we'd have to move, even though we still had more than a year left on our lease! Cue the freaking out!

Because we weren't planning to move so soon, we didn't have any savings. We also didn't have access to credit, since encountering some troubles in that area a few years ago. My family was struggling themselves and couldn't help, and my husband doesn't speak to anyone in his family except his kids (who are grown). So, what to do?

We found a place we liked in the same subdivision we were already living in. But we needed $2,885 to move in (security deposit, half-month's pro-rated rent, and pet deposit). Here's what we did:

            Two payday loans totalling $600.
Paycheck from my day job: $965
Put 23 domain names for sale on eBay, of which 14 sold: $150 (total)
Picked up a few article writing jobs from some of my regular clients: $300
Husband sold his favorite guitar on eBay: $600
Short-term loan from one of my step-sons, to be paid back in a week: $300
            Grand total: $2,915

That gave us a $30 surplus for a nice meal out to celebrate getting into the new house. Like I said, it wasn't easy, but we did it. I've always believed that if you're really determined to do something, you can do it. And, this isn't the first time I've had to come up with a lot of money seemingly out of nowhere. It can be hard and stressful, but it IS possible.

We have a new motto at my house now: No more spending money on anything until we have at least $3,000 in savings, in case something like this happens again!

    Hi Ken,

It's funny I live in Bryn Athyn just up 332 from Richboro - in fact my daughter plays soccer at the Civic Center on Newtown road.

I am always looking for mentors - I am new to the internet marketing game and would love to get together since we are so close.

    Hi Ken -

This is really only a tactic that can be used by people with a list...

We wanted to monetize our lists further so that we could increase marketing spend on our own products, whilst increasing the value we offered to those on our list.

So we brainstormed potentially successful business models already in use on the internet, and came to the conclusion that a daily newsletter would be something all our lists would benefit from (with relevant advertorials included).

We've been testing this for about a month on a subset of our lists and it's making us on average $100.00 per day additional profit - So a $36500 profit stream from a standing start in less than a month.

And the beauty is that we are only targeting about 1/3 of the people on our list so far, all of which have been through our product sales pitch and were unlikely to buy (stale).

We have not yet fully optimized our ads, and they are all single commission non recurrent products we are advertizing, so that needs to be done to improve profits further.

The daily newsletters are all outsourced, so the our time commitment is just a couple of hours every 2 weeks, and the newsletters are then posted to article sites after they are sent to the subscribers for extra traffic.

By the end, once we have the systems fully in place and all our "stale" leads loaded we expect to triple the profits by the end of January, creating a new $100,000 per annum profit stream.

I hope this gives some people ideas to leverage more of what they already have - Especially if they have lists that are not performing for them.

    Cheers

    Richard.

    Ken,

Great post! Gives me an opportunity to renew our conversation from JV Alert Live! and share it with others here at WF.

I've helped many marketers raise funds quickly by repurposing their audio library into a preloaded, custom MP3 player or iPod.

For select clients, I can create their product without a deposit for inventory. This is because I can create the players on demand. In other words, if I know that they are going to provide the marketing muscle, I'll provide turnkey production and fulfillment. This allows them to test the product with their list and create instant profits without risk.

Ken, thanks for sharing it! I too rarely post to the WF; had another account in the 1990's. Sorry I missed this Protege call! Here are some previous and current ways I've used, solely and working with other entrepreneurs:

    A. Vector A, Money Management:

    1. Eliminated *unnecessary* expenses and paid more attention to the budget (projected/actual) line items

    2. PAID OFF consumer debt, especially higher interest debt such as auto loans, major credit cards, dept store cards (BUT keeping credit lines open for best ratings, making small regular purchases and paying off debts within the grace period)

    3. Called in old and aging debts that others owed JIT.com and me personally (managing credit extended to others)

Reply to Ken McArthur: "Fast cash flow," continued...

      B. Vector B, Business Development:

      1. In 1995, I developed a product (software) w/ others and delivered value to an under-the-radar niche for undisclosed amounts (I have a policy to NEVER discuss my income publicly; only the US Gov't has a right to know figures for taxes).

      2. Cashed out JIT.com (back in the day, when "3 letter" top-level domains (TLD's) were still plentiful and available)).

      3. Arranged a Joint Venture to continue another stream of income, hands off

        C. Vector C, Charity/Pro Bono Work:

        1. What? That's right. Whenever I give freely from my heart, which I do often by my choice selectively and sometimes if asked directly, somehow anything I *need* appears from somewhere. The "Paying It Forward" concept: e.g., whenever I help others, including strangers, it often "happens" that later I "happen to" inadvertently receive unexpected things such as help, gifts, increased business, encouragement, testimonials, referrals, new opportunities, and money from people I may not even know yet. It can be a new idea, an offline interaction, a personal or professional introduction, a dormant account reactivating, or new biz. It appears in different forms and at varying time intervals, so it's a bit hard to explain/quantify. You get the gist.

        2. Sharing: I mentor or quietly support others for free, one deserving person per year. I have NEVER publicized this personal practice before; since I know and trust Ken I'm sharing it now so you can consider doing the same for others! I will NOT share or publicize the name of any person I'm sponsoring or have sponsored, as that would nullify my spirit and intent for doing this (and I ask all beneficiaries not to disclose or discuss it either). Discretion is Rule #1. The other rule is simple: the person whom I select annually, after watching his or her ethics, behavior, and their "value offered" for a few months, must "Pay It Forward." It has worked for years. Try it? Whether or not I receive any direct "financial" benefit from anything connected to this practice isn't relevant or measured; it feels good! I may receive future benefits indirectly; I don't know or expect any. The third rule is that for it to work, the person should be CHOSEN carefully. ;-) It's "non-solicited."

        3. Organized Pro Bono:
If you prefer connecting with others who support pro bono publicly also, consider donating your time, skills, or services: see this URL - TapRootFoundation Dot Org -

I know, this isn't what you might expect for an answer to Ken's main question. Choose whatever approaches work for you. I choose to focus on other people first...

          D. Vector D, Mindset:

          1. Focus on the activities that bring value to one's life; this may or may not be money directly (time, friendship, love!).

          2. Believe that you deserve success, in whatever way you define success, and you are more likely to be successful! Simple.

          3. Start thinking BIG: if XYZ can help 123 (number of people), perhaps doing ABC can help even more people. Aim higher.

I believe that you "reap what you sow." Thanks for asking, Ken. Keep up your good work; you're a gem.

Back in July 2007 I had to raise $1000 pretty darn fast. Well fast is an understatement! I made $1000 in less than ONE hour!

My brother at the time was having trouble, sleep apnea, and was told (threatened!) that he'd have to get a system to use at night (he called it the darth vader mask!) or lose his drivers license. So in all the panic etc., I got online with a marketing contact to ask his opinion (Stewart Mackay - special thanks again). He's the one who helped me develop this idea:

I launched a WSO for ghostwriting. Mind you, I was brand new to ghostwriting (not writing in general!) and a) did NOT know what to expect and b) did NOT have more than 300 posts to my name (maybe less).

I put up an offer that, little did I realize, was so heavenly priced that Warriors ate it up in no time flat. I offered 10 slots - for a writing package. Included 25+ page ebook, keyword research, and 5 day autoresponder - all for $97. Now, *today* yes I realize that's a total steal! I would order ALL TEN slots. But back then, I had no clue. Man was I amazed to see how quickly my Paypal shot up to $1000!

So back then I was kinda green. I also didn't realize how much stress doing all that ghostwriting would cause me. Those were some serious pressures because I did NOT want to let down my initial customers - those that could pave the way for me, had I wanted to remain in the ghostwriting field. Needless to say I moved on to do other things, but there's a lot of other factors involved. I still love writing!

Let's just say nowadays, you'd never catch me selling my services at such a low price. But at the time, it was a super fast way to fill a need.

I really enjoyed the overall process of ghostwriting (despite the stress I put upon myself). I met some great contacts and learned a lot, and was ecstatic to get some great testimonials. I think it was those very testimonials that gave me the personal confidence boost to move further and further into building my business online.

I know there's a warrior (Larry but can't remember his WF nick) that recently had a WSO for $100 you could get FIFTY 400+ word articles. I bought that, and btw Larry your writing is excellent. So happy! But think about it - do you realize how FAST he must have brought in money from everyone who JUMPED on that WSO before the spots ran out? Phew! I certainly have an idea...

Want fast money? Offer a killer service at a killer price, and completely and wholeheartedly OVERDELIVER big time.

But then - be prepared for hard work. More importantly, be prepared for success. I know I'm going on a tangent here but it's worth talking about.

During that WSO I did I was pretty green like I said. I had NO idea what kind of success to expect. Well after my ten spots filled up in less than an hour, people kept replying to the thread! I was sitting here pulling my hair out... what should I do??? And then - guess what I did? I set up a WAITING LIST via aweber and had everyone who didn't get in on the initial 10 spots sign in to the waiting list. Over 100 Warriors.

Mind you in the end, I did not offer ghostwriting to that list. I wanted to go in a different direciton. But to offer them SOMETHING, I polled them on what they wanted if I put together some PLR. And then... I went down the PLR route for awhile. Great fun!

Ok I'm done now - sorry for the super looooong story. I think this must be the longest post I've ever made apart from the War room!!

    Sshhh I'm gone now

    Ken,

I could write a book on these kind of stories. Being a single mom, who has a hard time staying focused on one thing at a time online, and a million things pulling me in every direction offline, I seem to get started and never finished.

I know I have the capability to make money. I have done it with my own software products, writing plr, and writing reviews and earning affiliate comissions. In fact the third is what I seem to do best, but by doing this it also leads me in to many directions.

Well here is a funny story that anyone who has had trouble staying focused will get a big kick out of.

The other night, I was really working hard at trying to figure out just which direction to go since I know I am capable of different avenues.

What always stumbles me up, is one little glitch in uploading a script, trying to plan a campaign when I am so tired I can't think straight....... could go on and on.

Well I was getting ready to retire for the evening and I needed some inspirtation. So I went to google and typed in "how to stay focused"

It lead me to this article:

    11 ways of staying focused

I read this helpful article and was looking at the related posts at the bottom of the page.

One of the titles seemed really familiar.
7 Simple Ways to Stay Focused
    I clicked on it.

    It lead me here:
7 Simple Ways to Stay Focused to What is Most Important to Your Daily Successes by Laurie Meade Lauries Legends Co

I just started cracking up. It was an article I wrote myself over a year ago on the exact topic I was looking for inspiration for that night. Staying focused.

Everyone I have shared this story with just cracks up laughing, (these are people that know me well, who don't even necessarily understand internet marketing.)

But there was a lesson to be learned. I probably have several products sitting out there on the internet in articles I have written in the past, and could learn what direction to go by studying which ones have been the most popular.

In the meantime, I will go back to working on my latest review.

      Hey Laurie,

I had something happen to me in that same kind of circular impact way when speaking at a recent event in Long Beach -- but in this case the route of impact spanned over 40 years and twi generations.

A young woman came up to me and told me how much my presentation had meant to her and touched her.

As we continued our conversation, she happened to mention that she was the daughter of the folk singer Glenn Yarborough.

Most of you will probably not remember Glenn, but it he was very well known in the mid-sixties and when I was growing up, he was the hero of a group of high-school friends.

From listening to Glenn's music, I was inspired to write music of my own and from my music I learned about our power to impact other people.

In my book, Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions and Make a Difference in a Noisy World, I write about that experience and how it changed my life and eventually inspired me to write the book.

So think about it for a moment.

Back in 1965, Glenn Yarborough inspires me to write music, which teaches me about how we all have an impact and make a difference, which enables me to write a book on the subject, travel to Long Beach CA and then touch the life of his very own daughter.

What we do matters in so many ways. Usually those ways are tiny things that we do that we don't think matter at all.

Whether we want to or not we make a difference.

Thanks for sharing your story and letting me share mine.

      All the best,

      Ken

That is a neat story Ken. My life seems full of these, more than coincidence events, I have to chalk it up to the power of intention, or the law of attraction.

It is really weird the way things always seem to fall in place, just when you need them to, or when you least expect something to happen.

You know then that their is a force outside of us that has a big impact on everyone here on this beautiful planet we live on.

Hi Ken - Good to see you here!

I've been lucky enough to not be desperately cash-strapped for several years now, but it wasn't like that when I first threw up my copywriting services shingle. Here's the story:

Following a nasty skiing accident (high-speed, one-way conversation with a very unfriendly tree) I had severe medical problems that had completely sidelined me for the better part of a year and a half. I was receiving a small disability payment, but barely enough to pay the rent, much less anything else.

At the same time, I couldn't stand or sit for longer than 15 minutes, and was in and out of bone-graft surgery about every eight weeks or so. So a "career" job was out. I applied for some part-time "Micky-D" style jobs, and got turned down every time for being "over-qualified" (too much education, dammit!).

Things were pretty desperate. Then, in a local thrift store, I picked up Peter Bowerman's The Well-Fed Writer. As I read it, I realized that I had been writing copy of one sort or another for years - without knowing that I was a copywriter!

I thought, "I have a computer! I can do this!" followed immediately by, "But how do I start with no money, no web site, no clients, and no work to show?"

I had about $43.87 until the next disability check arrived in three weeks. I had just moved to a new city (for surgery) and didn't know a soul. I had a computer, but no printer or Internet access.

First, I looked in the phone book for the local Chamber of Commerce. I called them and asked if they had a list of their members. Sure enough, for $7, it was mine. I also found out they had a networking night on the second Thursday of every month - three days away. It would cost me (as a non-member) $15 to attend.

Back to the phone book. Found cheap dial-up Internet for $9.95 a month, and paid for the first month.

Back to the phone book. Found a plasma bank. Donated plasma the same day for $30.

Went back home. Registered my domain name ($9.95) and paid for the first month of hosting ($11.95). Also designed business cards on my computer, using Microsoft Office. Emailed my doc to myself.

Off to the public library, used their public computers to retrieve my email. Printed off a copy of my doc file using their printer (cost: 10 cents).

Next, off to Office Depot. Printed twelve, full-color copies of my business card layout ($1/pg). Cut them up by hand, using plain old scissors.

Spent the next day putting up a very basic web site. I made up mock samples, and posted them on my portfolio page. The body copy read: "Here are some examples of what I can do for you." (notice, I didn't say they were actual clients!)

Wednesday, went to the library, and grabbed the only two books they had on writing copy: Tested Advertising Methods and Oglivy on Advertising (Boy, did I luck out!). Spent the rest of the day and most of the next one cramming and sleeping.

Thursday afternoon, I scrounged out the most professional-looking outfit I could put together from my extensive wardrobe of Gor-tex and fleece, and took myself down to the Chamber's shindig.

BTW: I am a what I'd call a "situational extrovert". I lean toward the "introvert" end of the social scale, and I hate being in large groups of people. And when I have to be all bright and shiny for hours at a time, I find it, frankly, exhausting. So this was really pushing myself waaaay out of my comfort zone. Plus, of course, there was the whole stage fright thing.

But ya do what ya gotta do...

At the Chamber event, I was charming and attentive (if I say so myself). Thanks to my cramming, I listened more than I spoke. And when I did speak, I tried to say something knowledgable and valuable.

I left with two hot leads, and a fistful of cards to follow up on.

Called the hot leads the next day, Friday, and got one press release ($75) and a complete web site copy job ($650). The check for $650 was in my mailbox on Monday.

      I haven't looked back since.

Granted, $725 isn't $1,000, but to me, at that time, it made all the difference between having a roof over my head, or having to find a cosy, new underpass lodging for myself and my two cats.

I probably could have improved my results if I had had a specific dollar figure in mind when I went to the Chamber networking. I would have been focused on developing prospects with that specific amount in mind. However, at the time, I just had a burning but vague focus on getting through the month intact.

I'm not trying to get on a soapbox here, but I do want to say this:

Fear can be an enemy or an ally. You can let fear control you and paralyze you. Or you can take all that scary energy, and direct it into goal-oriented action. In both cases, the choice is yours.

Granted, I had some good intellectual skills to draw on. But I would have used whatever tools I had at my disposal. I would have found a way, using whatever I could do to survive. If that had been washing dishes at Mickey-D's, damn straight I would have taken the job!

Too often I see people who say they're desperate, also say, "Oh, I don't want to do ...", or "Oh, I can't do ...".

IMHO, when you begin by eliminating possibilities, instead of looking for possibilities, that's a sure way to fail.

    Collette,

What a great inspirational story and example for all of us. Life gets hard for everyone, but we always have assets of some type that we can leverage if only for a moment.

Thanks so much for sharing your courage and motivating actions!

    All the best,

    Ken

    Hey Mike,

Validation is worth every second of the 16 minutes it takes to watch. We forget so often what a little encouragement will do for the people around us.

And you never know what a great impact it may have.

    All the best,

      - No can't hurt you -

I recently received an email promo that I really liked.

But the dollar value was way out of my reach. I mulled
      over it...

It took a few hours for me to decide: if I go for this deal
by first selling (lining up a buyer) and then buying the product,
the worst I'll get is a NO. I mean what can No do to you?

      NO-thing!

So, I set out to work. And with a lot of negotiation I succeeded.

The sale and purchase really put me in a much better leveraged
position than I was before. I'm definitely smiling... because
I cut a deal out of nothing. The value to me alone I guest is at
least $9000. I also uncovered another skill in the process.

I guest all those Jay Abraham tapes rubbed off.

      Do nothing = get nothing.

      Be bold!

    Hey Jeff,

I love that kind of story.

That's a great way to accumulate assets. Just find someone that you can pass the cost to.

    Thanks for pitching in!

    All the best,

    Ken
