just so i have this correct before i purchase my 1st domain from GoDaddy.com. (i have a hostgator hosting account already)

can someone explain to me what exactly a domain is? is it a website?

i must name the domain something based on the subject matter contained on it.

for every category, say Car Covers and Pool Tables, i need a new domain. so one domain for Car Covers and another for Pool Tables?

thanks guys

A domain name is not a website. It is the location of your website, just like your street address is the location of your house. A domain name is simply a string of characters you use to identify your website. Think of it like your phone number. When somebody calls your phone number, they get you or whatever message you want them to hear. Likewise, when someone types in your domain name, they will be brought to your website that you have created under that domain name. The contents of the website do not necessarily have to match the domain name, but obviously, you'd usually want your content to be what a visitor would expect to see.

  • Gene answered your primary question pretty well, but I just wanted to point out that GoDaddy's checkout is pretty annoying. I like Namecheap for the lack of hassle and free WhoIs for a year so you may want to look at that.

    Good luck!

For categories that are not related (like the Car Covers and Pool Tables that you mentioned), it'd probably be best to have separate domain names.

Of course, this is not a "rule" per se, but having unrelated content on a website that does not match its domain name is probably not going to make your website convert too well, especially if you're selling or promoting some product or service there.

Visit the help section of any of the webhosting companies and you will find lots of good information explaining the different areas of what domains are and web-hosting in general.
