Can anyone recommend a good captcha plugin for comments?

Hey all,

I am not sure if this thread would go here or not. I don't think it actually programming. Not sure.

I am running into a lot of attempts at spam on my contact form on my site.

It is a shortcode built into the theme. I am using the inFocus theme from Themeforest.

I am hoping someone has experience with choosing a plugin for captcha or something that can cut down on the crap.

It kind of doesn't make sense, because the stuff in these emails I am getting is total crap.

I will forego the built in shortcode for the contact form and use something else if there is another way to stop this.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Greg

If you're using wordpress, there are some great plugins (i.e. Akismet) for spam reduction.

      Thanks jewin,

I am using WP and I have akismet installed, it isn't stopping these stupid emails, I think they are testing them thinking if they are comments, but they are complete jibberish.

Weird. Kind of harmless. It's kind of like playing Galaga in my inbox.

As I know, recaptcha dot net should be the best, right? It has been acquired by google and so it will be developed even more. However, no matter what captcha plugin you are using, you can still be over posted because there are captcha bypassing service like bypasscaptcha dot com run by Indians. This is the real world, you can not bypass it. Finally, some manual working is still required.

Akismet wont monitor contact form submissions, only comments, as far as im aware.

The gibberish is a simple spam technique - the spam tool sends out these messages to everywhere it finds a user input box. It then goes back later and checks the page for said text. If it exists, its found a vulnerable, un-moderated target for spam - then the real spam links will arrive.

a captcha would defeat this type of spam

A good free WP form with captcha is: contact form 7 (google it, i cant post links yet).

thanks for that carrot. I thought it might be something like that, since there are software programs that will do it for comment sections, but didn't know for the contact area as well. But it makes sense, why not try if they can get a spam link, right?

      I'll check out the plugin.

I would use Disqus commenting system (free plugin) with facebook Connect integration. That way people can login with their facebook account and write comments, or register in Disqus and post from their Disqus profile. Many regular blog commenters already have Disqus accounts since most major high traffic blogs use it.
