Why So Many Registered Users On My Site

Looking for a bit of help here. A site I no longer maintain as such is getting over 150 users registering every day per emails I get from WP.

The cpanel shows I am getting same if not more unique visitors every day however Google Analytics shows like 7 new visitors. GA figure is backed up as the posts as such are not getting any views or very little.

Now, I know GA is the more accurate figure but can anyone explain why I would be getting all those new users plus cpanel backing that up with different IP addresses?

Could my GA code be in the wrong place? I am sure its in the header section as obviously its being tracked by the GA interface.

Any ideas?

TBH I am going to be selling this site soon anyways coz I just want rid of it but would be handy to know answer first.

I'm a bit technology challenged but if you need any help with WP look up Istvan Horvath. I have to admit cpanel on all my blogs show completely different analytics to what GA does. So I'm not sure how accurate either are. I tend to go with GA but I'd be interested to see what others think.

Yeah apparently GA is the more accurate but I am getting totally unique IP addresses each time which is making me wonder if my GA code is inserted correctly.

To register as a user you have to be on the homepage and the GA code, is in the header, which I presume should be the main page.

Definately PM Istvan, he'll know exactly where the code goes. You can download an analytics plug in or other tracking software that won't slow the blog down like analytics does. The 2 best people I know to help here are Istvan and Suzanne (Sbucciarel). Do take their advice.

    Google analytics is woefully inaccurate.

If you don't believe, so a search in Google for a keyword phrase that no one else could remotely use to bring up your site in the search results. Click on your site ... check your Google analytics a few days later to see how many visitors came to your site for that phrase !!!

Maybe you should check it from a few other tracking sites like quancast and alexa to make sure.

Consider this, GA is a third-party statistics utility, AWStats is a server-sided statistics utility.

A good way to put it into perspective, if your phone battery says it has 5% left, but the "battery checker" says it has 30% left, which one are you going to believe?

GA is mainly better for just a few small simple things, such as setting goals, connecting it to adwords to track clicks etc... etc...

    Hope that helped some

I just wanna answer on the header title.

He has a many registered user on his site just because he knows the key or the strategy on how to build the list.

It's just a trick head line title so that some internet marketers drove there eyes then contribute a post w/ out knowing below on his signature there's a backlink to his site. Now that's smart move! Im impress and it's not a spam.

Once you know how to choose a main headline, definitely people are flocking right away. Like right now Im also here on this forum.

Lets just say if I create a wonderful headline like "Make Money While having S_X ,,, hmmm Lol - people would actually wonder and ask themselves "what on earth is he talking to.. better check that out" Well, ask me there is no such thing like that. It's just a strategy. This guy really know's what's he up to.

I guess that's the key if you know how to choose your headline definitely its just a simple twist of faith. And you're good to Go!

It sounds like spammers auto-registering accounts.
Their typical methods would never trigger the GA code. That's why GA isn't showing visitors.

That is what I was thinking. Very possibly accounts being autocreated to build profile links.

I gues it is possible that they would be synthetic-unique visitors if beign sent through proxy servers.

This is why I add captcha to any and all signup and registration forms.

Then you will be seeing real human traffic which are usually much, much less.

You want human traffic. Bots do not purchase things or click on ads.

Let's get back to the basics.

WHY do you let people to register? Do you need them? - If you don't, check in your wp-admin Settings > General: Membership. The "Anyone can register" box MUST be unchecked.

If you have new members registered even with that box unchecked... then there is a problem with the security of your blog.

    1. See if that check box is set as required
    2. Delete ALL the users
    3. If you still get (automated, bot) registrations... consider installing a plugin: WordPress › Sabre « WordPress Plugins

To be honest, I don't use the plugin, just don't let anybody register and never had any fake registrations.
    YMMV

I agree with the above couple posters - it is probably spambots.

Also keep in mind that spambots can spoof their IP addresses, meaning they could appear unique when they are not.

It is possible to register to a WP blog without triggering the GA code. You can check the number of users in WP and you'll see they are all there.
To stop and get rid of them, do as Istvan advised.

Yeah sounds like spambost then. Would make sense given the email addresses I am getting and no views on posts. TBH I think I am going to be ditching the site anyway.

Cheers for the info tho, another nugget of info in the quest for online freedom

Update. Added CAPTCHA and no difference to the Cpanel figures, they keep going up. Also the users keep rising as well at the same rate.

Had a look at a few of them and there email addresses seem legit ie they go back to live sites, however in the User form in WP they have strange website addresses.

For example one user has the email address ending with @womensclothes****. com. So you would think the website detail in WP would be www . womensclothes****. com but its not, its www . cart***. com.

    All very strange.

I recently changed our village website so that local people could register and join a forum. As I get so many spambot registrations on other WP sites, I also added the "New User Approve" plug-in which means that I need to manually approve registrations before they can access the site.

With so many sign-ups a day that might not help you, but it's a thought if you actually want legitimate users to register with the site.

Otherwise, as Istvan suggested, I would just disallow registrations.
