Is It Time for a Video Subforum?

With all the new subforums that have popped up lately, maybe it's time to have one just for videos too?

That way, the people who enjoy wasting our time with videos--making us spend 5-7 minutes watching something that could have been read in 30 seconds--and the people that don't mind watching them can post and watch videos to their hearts' content without cluttering up the main forum.

Sorry, Dan...have to disagree with you. Videos only waste your time if you CHOOSE to watch them. Why not just close the thread and move on if you're not interested? That's what I do as I'm not much of a video person either.

The thing is I've already wasted my time opening the thread. When I open a thread in a discussion forum, I expect to read something. So, it's misleading when you open a thread up and--bam!--it's a video.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Now that I can understand. I do wish people would tell you it's a video in their thread title so I can just pass them by. But that's not 5-7 minutes, just 20 seconds or so, so not a huge time suck involved. Still a bit annoying though, so I can see your point there.

LOL! That about sums up my impression about video posting. It's more personal, but it's also a major time waster for yourself and your readers.

Yep. Common courtesy is an endangered species these days, dangerously near extinction.

The problem with marketing videos is:
      They are not videos.
They are slide slows with narration.
Heck, I can read faster than the narrator.

You haven't seen my videos then. :p

I think the issue is that it is not as easy to scan and speed read a video.

I'll be sure to start adding a "chipmonk" speed to any of my future videos.

Ha. I couldn't agree more. Everyone makes fun of the corporate world that is dominated by power point presentations...yet the IM world is basically videos of people doing power point presentations.

At least the "professional" videos have a script. 99% of the others are basically just a dude talking and rambling.

Obviously, they must convert for people. But I literally can't remember the last time I watched more than a minute of a video.

PS I hate videos too. I always close sales pages that contain a video and I never buy WSOs that deliver via video. I don't have time to watch video.
We're not talking about video on sales pages or other places, Dan's specifically talking about videos posted here on the Main Forum. And he's not asking for a lot at all. This is a discussion section, and people are posting self-promotional video articles.

I think Dan and Ken make good points.

The occasional video is fine, but some posters seem to like starting all their threads with a video. Not only is that medium more time-consuming to scan, but in a discussion forum, it makes it difficult to pick out particular sentences from the OP to quote in any reply.

Or maybe we're expected to reply with our own videos...?

At the very least, video posters should include a written summary of their main points.

        Why?

Adding [Video] to the subject is literally a second of work, if you're even halfway competent as a typist. The only reason that I can see to not add that to the subject is because you don't want people to know unti after they've opened the thread.

I'm not especially keen on people posting links or videos - if I open a thread I want to see the message, not have to take additional steps to see the message. I don't think it's at the point where rules would be necessary, but it would be courteous.

Dan, there is a simple solution. You let your computer download the video while you do something else. Then you burn that video file onto a CD as a data file. Again while you are doing something else.

Then you hold the disc to your forehead, and in just a matter of a couple seconds you can absorb the video contents by osmosis.

And when you are finished, you have a nice, shiny, silver colored coaster.
