Do some sites pay google to stay #1?

Do some sites pay google to stay #1?I have noticed that a bunch of #1 sites have links right under name to parts of their site. I assume that they paid for that? How much would that cost, and can you only do it if you are #1 for a keyword?
#google #pay #sites #stay
  • If you are talking about organic search results, No...

Those "expanded" search results are also not paid for, the spider does it for specific sites...

Is this is what you are talking about:

If yes then you don't have to worry about it as google does it automatically and it's free.

As far as your first question is concerned, google is in a law suit right now and they have been accused of taking money from some well established corporations for #1 rankings. I don't know if the accusations are true or not but google says that they don't charge for the organic ranking and it is Dependant on the algorithm.

This makes me laugh. Google is still a company, it's not like a gov't search engine taking a bribe...

Oh, I was asking because I have only seen larger company sites and the occasional popular forum get that in the #1 slot, many smaller sites that are in #1 dont have it.
Yea I heard about that lawsuit. I think they do SOMETHING to mess with certain ratings due to the weird way of ranking their suppposed alogorithm uses to bounce people back and forth. i.e. "google slapping" and stuff like that. I doubt they are taking money though. From what I understand other top search engines tend to be more stable. (or am I wrong about that)

They dont charge for organic ranking and it's true. Those sites with links under it are authority sites for the respective niches. If you see Webmaster Tools, you'll notice that there is a tab that shows the links that Google presents of your site.
