An Internet Business Model Question

I have gotten various answers to this question from friends - most of whom were failures at internet business development. I decided to post it here to get some more varied, and intelligent responses. Apart from outsourcing the actual set up of a website - and SEO functions, what areas or functions of the internet business model should the business owner take absolute care to understand or familiarize himself/herself with in order to minimize the risk of his/her venture failing?

I'd say it's vital to know your numbers, specifically visitor value.

That way, you'll know if you're making a profit per visitor or on the way to losing your shirt.

    Google it.

    Cheers,

    Hi.

I think you know this - but there are no fixed answers that apply to everyone for this.

It depends on you and your business model.

I've always thought that a working understanding of html is important so that you don't need someone else to set up a site, create links etc.

An understanding of SEO is useful because it's often a vital part of making a website generate revenue.

But with that said - you can get both of those areas done by other people.

What really makes the difference in whether or not you're ultimately successful is the effectiveness of your business plan and your dedication to taking consistent focused action.

The best plan in the world is useless if you're lazy and unfocused.

The worst plan can be made to work with the application of regular focused action.

So - the question isn't what things can you get others to do - it's what will YOU do.

At the very least you need to understand what matters - customers!!

How to find what people want and put it in front of them are more important than almost anything else.

I personally like to understand everything. You don't want to get caught up in analysis paralysis, but then again, you don't want to get stuck making stupid mistakes.

Before I outsource something, I usually always do it and master it myself. That way I know if the worker is doing a good job.

Exactly. Understand first everything about what you will be doing so that you will be prepared in dealing with various circumstances.

How about familiarizing the experiences of some outstanding internet businessmen and make thorough analysis from their experiences. Take advices from experts. Again, know, understand and master the business.

copywriting, finding "targeted" traffic, networking with bloggers and webmasters in your niche and most importantly the math

also, another good way to do this is to google your competition and contact them and see if they'll answer some questions for you.
