Reasonable time to start earning money from my affiliate sites?

I was recently sort of hired by a friend who had bought a very in-depth training program (which I checked out here and has a nice reputation) for building a business. He has money to spend but no computer skills, which I have in pretty good supply. This training program is divided into 3 sections, each growing in required skills upon the previous one...affiliate marketing, CPA, and PPC. Over 3 months I have studied the program in detail, then put up so far 7 affiliate sites (developing more all the time and getting the process mastered and organized) based on Clickbank products. I am starting to get traffic, using high quality article marketing. I use pen names, and run them through Web 2.0 sites, commenting and social bookmarking. So far I have made a grand total of 1 sale. Every day I am exposed a glut of promises to teach me to make 6 figures next month. I am so far resisting the lure and sticking with focus on getting through this program before I branch out.

My question is, what is a reasonable length of time to expect to start earning? I refuse to buy the hype. I saw one person here say 18-24 months of consistent work building a substantial income, which seems realistic. But others promise results in a month. I do believe in focus, persistence and consistent forward pressure. I am wondering now if I need to get someone who truly knows to assess what I am doing and check my process for effectiveness. I do NOT want to waste time or effort. How in heck are we newbies supposed to find accurate and reliable coaching? Who can we trust to get to check us, coach our work? The person who designed the program I am using is not personally available, though I do believe his program is worthy. Where do we go to get trustworthy guidance? How can we know if we are on track?

For most people, 18-24 months is realistic.

For exceptional people with good marketing plans behind them, next week is realistic...

If you are willing to invest in PPC, today is possible.

The real question is, "How committed are you to creating a fast return on your investment?"

My committment is total. I intend to fund my retirement this way. But PPC is presently completely outside of my skill range and I hear so many horror stories about people losing big time. So I wouldn't dream of going for PPC until I have some good training. And that goes back to my original question...how can we find coaching we can rely on? For instance, I have been advised that Wealthy Affiliate is excellent, but that I have already passed the stage where they would be the right fit. So...who to believe?

there's plenty of threads here that says you could make $3k per month per site just using SEO, after 3-6 months waiting

search for 'best threads in warrior forum'

now, you can believe it or not

why don't you try it and report back in 6 months?

a PPC guru once said you need at least $2k and good coaching for success in PPC

if success is dependent on traffic, 3 months is a realistic goal if you know your SEO well enough.

if you have money to invest in PPC, today is a realistic goal (as somebody else said).

24 months seems a bit extreme to me. I would suggest that if you wait that long for success you've probably done something wrong.

research the products you are promoting. Create how to manuals if it's software, or better yet a video and post it on your website.

Sorry to say, but everybody's learning curve is different... time and effort is relative

Person A might not be earning anything after 1 year, but he doesn't feel that he has waste his time and effort, because the things he learnt during the 1 year allowed him to move a lot faster in his 2nd year

Whereas if Person B has the wrong mindset thinking that he wants to a foolproof 100% guaranteed plan that will make him money after X amount of days, then he can continue waiting.. and waiting... because such plans do not exist in this world!!!!

The only thing is to keep trying other peoples different business models again and again, find what really works for you, combine all the different parts together and then tweak it to suit yourself!!!

It's really all about the traffic and that basically boils down to your keyword selection and how much promotion you are doing to the site (and, of course your ability to presell the visitor).

It sounds like you are doing all the right things and working hard, but are you doing enough of the right things?

How many keywords are your affiliate sites focused on?

Are you at #1 for those keywords?

What about your articles? Are you at #1 for those and how much traffic do you get?

What is your conversion rate from your articles to your site?

What is your conversion rate from your site to you affiliate product?

What is the conversion rate of the actual product from YOUR traffic? (Ok, probably not enough data to tell on this yet)

These are all things to look at and improve on in order to get more traffic/sales.

If I can give you one piece of advice, it is to pick ONE thing and focus only on that ONE thing. The reason most beginner Internet Marketers never make it is because they get caught up in the hype, always buying in to the next big thing. It's very hard (near impossible) to ever make progress like that.

You need to focus focus focus. Unsubscribe yourself from any email lists that are regularly promoting IM products - you don't need the temptation.

Keep doing what you're doing. It takes time. But you will get there a lot faster if you just stick to one thing and do it well. There are plenty of people making money doing the exact same thing you are doing right now.

Just remember, you won't hit a home run every time - otherwise this stuff would be easy. For every 10 websites you set up, you may only end up with 1 or 2 that bring in the bucks - but that's the nature of the beast. And you will never find those 1 or 2 profitable websites unless you set up the 10 websites.

Will has hit the nail right on the head there. Unless you're using PPC or paid traffic, where you can control the traffic and it basically comes on demand once you've tweaked things, with SEO and websites there's no way to absolutely know for sure before setting up a website if it is going to be a raging success. Think about it - if it was such a sure thing, then everybody and his dog would be throwing up these sites like crazy. Even an experienced marketer will have some sites that perform poorly, this is just the nature of these websites and using SEO.

It is a numbers game, and you have to focus on always building up these websites on a consistent basis to see results. Obviously, the more websites you build, the greater your chances of seeing results and the higher your income will be. Sometimes you might have to build 20 websites before hitting 1 or 2 golden ones that gush money like an oil well. You just never know for sure, and the classic newbie's mistake is to give up prematurely after just building several sites and not seeing any results. Do not fall into that trap!

My advice would be to take the course you have right now in your hands (as long as it's a good one) and work it to death. Really stick to what they say and do everything wholeheartedly.

The problems that most of the people on the warrior forum have (me included sometimes) is that they often skip from one idea to the next when the going gets tough.

I am by no means an expert and it has taken me a long time to start seeing results. I have been guilty in the past of switching from one thing to another, but I am now just focused on one thing and that is starting to work for me, thanks to the guidance of my Mentor.

What the guys above have said is true, as long as you are happy with the program you are working at, just keep at it and you will see success.

    Focus Focus Focus

    Regards

I think you are approaching it correctly. It seems of the three "sections" of the course chosen, you have worked your way through the first section.

My advice is to ignore anyone who tells you to "go here" or "go there" or "try this". The method has been chosen and you have made a great start - keep going on it until you have worked your way through the entire program.

Worry about the PPC when you get to that part of the program. Don't get so focused on doing more and more on the first (affiliate) section and forget to move to the next method to add to it.

Your expectations are reasonable and clearly you are well focused - so keep going.

It all basically down to trial and error. If I new back when I started on my IM journey in June 2009 to what I know now, I could have saved countless wasted hours and a few quid, but that's what it all about, finding the right products and paths to market them correctly and that only comes with experience.

The 80/20 rule is quite accurate in this business I think in that, 20% of your efforts gives you 80% of your income. You just have to find out what works and what doesn't and eliminate the dross and push forward the tools which give you more profit.

Thanks to you all. This helps my frustration levels ease back a bit. I am glad to see the consensus on sticking with it. That has been my plan. I love this forum and you are all great to give us newbies the benefits of your experience. I can build websites like making peanut butter sandwiches..but mastering all the tech stuff that goes into them is an uphill climb.

The reasonable amount of time depends completely on the persons ability and dedication.

I have seen people start to make great money within 3 months of starting. Others, like myself, were doing it for one and a half years before making any steady income.
