Hosting question -- Is this possible to do?

I'm ready to make the switch to a new hosting company, and here is my question . . .

My site is a cold fusion site, and now I want that site to be in Wordpress.

Is that possible? Will I be able to completely start over and rebuild my site from scratch to make it a Wordpress site?

Is there a way to delete all the files and start over by FTPing new files in and then install Wordpress or something like that?

Thanks for any assistance on this!

It depends, you didnt give us much info.

The answer is probably. If the functionality of your coldfusion site is within the constraints of wordpress, then yes.

If you're wanting to retain the same domain name and your search engine rankings then there are some things to consider - I wrote an article on them here:

Migrate an HTML Website to WordPress | Create an Awesome Home Business

Although that article refers to an HTML site the same principles will apply to Coldfusion.

Martin, this is great information, thank you. Your article really lays out a good plan.

However, I'm not quite clear on what must happen once my test site on the new host is all spiffed out and ready to go.

How exactly does the old site get transferred over to the new host with its original domain?

      Thanks again for your help.

I didn't read Martin's paper, just wanted to add that one general case is using a 301 permanent redirect to send all links to an old domain over to one's new site.

I guess in your case, your retainning the domain, you want to preserve existing incoming links be providing them a destination for them, with a site structure matching the original as much as possible, the wordpress addressing scheme can complicate that, you centainly want a permalink setting of /%postname%/ to get seo friendly, normal looking addresses. And you'll want a good 404 error handler, than transparantly sends old link users to your home page.

Most ISPs provide fool proof wordpress installers, like in fantastico.

You'll have to change the nameservers from the old host to the new host - this is done with the domain registrar. It takes about 24 hours to populate through the web and that's it!

Also, while your main domain won't need redirection, many of your pages probably will. You can use a redirection plugin to manage your 301 redirects. Good luck!

I would suggest breaking this into two steps:

        1. Migrate your current site to the new hosting company and make sure everything is working smoothly. I don't know which company you have in mind but many offer to transfer a site as part of signing up with them.

        2. Transfer your current site from Coldfusion to WordPress.

        Cheers,

        Martin.
