Could THIS be the most powerful ingredient for making SERIOUS money....?

Ok.... I am VERY much looking forward to the conversations that come out of this post. You'll see why.

I've been communicating a lot with my own subscribers and many Warriors about where people are at in their business, the kinds of results they are generating, and so on.

In doing so I have noticed a pattern. Not just a pattern but a critical ingredient I am finding in those people who are producing financial results even with the odds not in their favor.

And that ingredient is this:

An Immediate - Potentially Desperate - Financial Need

In my own case I can say honestly that this is exactly how I started in IM. It was early June of that year and I realized that money was dwindling and (due to various circumstances) I would not be able to pay my bills in August without making something serious happen.

I had a desperate need. And that need created focus and execution at a level I had not previously experienced before. The result? Five figures in 59 days.

Is this "normal"? Of course not. But neither were my needs. I'm not smarter than most people here, not by a long shot. In fact it had nothing to do with that.

The situation required that I step up and produce at a whole new level - or create a serious problem for my family. Which would you choose?

It's amazing who you can become in those situations....IF you are clear enough to abandon the victim mentality see that you actually have a choice.

How about another example....

Look what happened recently with Michael Tracey and his serious health issue. A desperate need existed and people produced results that were FAR beyond ordinary to meet that need. Thousands of dollars folks....not in weeks or months...in DAYS. It was unbelievable to watch who people became in the face of that desperate situation.

So here are the questions:

1) Is there something to be said for the fact that a lot of people are simply "too comfortable" with the way things are to take massive action?

2) Could a desperate need - combined with a clear mind - be among THE most powerful ingredients for serious financial results?

3) Perhaps most important, how could the same focus and intensity be duplicated when desperation does NOT exist? Think of how powerful that would be.

What do you think?

The same thing happened to me -- success sprung out of a desperate need. It was make money, or not eat. Make money, or live in my car. You get the idea.

Yes, sometimes people need a catalyst. They need a REASON to step out of their comfort zone. Sometimes they need something painful (there's that desperate need).

It might be money. It might be hating their job. It might be that desperate feeling that their kids are growing up and they're not at home to see it.

Bottom line: When the pain of staying in the comfort zone becomes greater than the perceived pain of stepping out of one's comfort zone, people take action and get results.

    cheers,
    Becky

    Look at the Pacific Islanders.

Their existence was very easy. They didn't have to work very hard at providing or finding food. Shelter wasn't too much of a challenge either, since the temperatures are mild.

As a result, they didn't develop any more than basic technology. Their needs were met, so they stopped bettering themselves.

Need and hardship very often spur growth.

Great post. I was thinking about this last night. There is nothing more powerful that being desperate NOW. I got started in this whole online money making thing because i had a 'power of now' moment.

However, not everyone who is desperate has the ability to turn it around. I wish they truly did.

I think a common trait in people who find themselves in a desperate situation and turn it around, actually have the where with all to get organised and a belief that they will make it.

There is nothing more powerful than the combination of failure, desperation and the determination to succeed.

I like the 'burn the ships' story. Very powerful. I also like what was mentioned above 'finding your bottom' (or something like that). As we succeed and achieve what we want now, we need to have a new 'bottom', ie. $20 a day then $100 a day then $1000 a day etc etc.

I have slipped into a desperate situation myself.

    Homeless for a day.

One day was all I needed to hit my bottom. I started attacking this like an animal. Money is starting to roll in so fast now, I am wondering why I had a problem in the first place.

I believe what you are talking about is that internal pressure. Threshold. Anytime you reach threshold, you "snap", and jump off the fence.

The only reason anyone has not yet made money online is that they have simply not decided to. Period. The word decision literally means to "cut off from"

When you decide on something...you are cutting away from all other options. This gives you the clarity, as you are now focused like a laser beam.

You can choose your bottom. You can cultivate threshold NOW. Read Awaken the Giant Within for a system to do that. It has helped me anyway. I am going from homeless to multimillionaire in 2 years because my bottom was so outrageous. But you guys can do the same...It is all in your head. And you have control over it....if you want it bad enough...

This is the formula I made up:

    Anger + Passion + Belief + Vision + Focus = Magic

I'll expand on this a little more.

    No one likes change.

When we're comfortable, we tend to avoid change - even change for the better. When we're faced with certain hardship (change for the worse), we have to decide which change is preferable - one that happens to us, or one we control.

Very interesting, and true, post, Ken!
And, it is happening a lot. Look at how many new Warriors there are in the last few months. Your item number 2 is most important. When things get desperate financially, clear thinking sometimes goes out the window and it becomes hard to focus...I know!
I am still desperate and struggling...mostly because I'm stuck with dialup which makes everything take about 10 times longer! Hard to get ahead when you're beating your computer trying to get it to go faster LOL.
I, too, am looking forward to replies.

This is spot on! Just think of all the ULTRA successful people out there and their stories....

In almost every case they were down to their very last dollar!

Examples in "Think And Grow Rich" come to mind almost immediately.

One story in particular goes something like this....

      "Burn the Ships"

Commitment is the foundation of all Success

This phrase "Burn The Ships" comes from a historic conquest of history when, in 1519, Spanish Conquistador Hernando Cortez landed in Mexico on the shores of the Yucatan, with only one objective...seize the great treasures known to be there, hoarded by the Aztecs. Cortez was committed to his mission and his quest for riches is legendary. Cortez was an excellent motivator, he convinced more than 500 soldiers and 100 sailors to set sail from Spain to Mexico, commanding 11 ships, to take the world's riches treasure. The historic question is "how a small band of Spanish soldiers arrived in a strange country and swiftly brought about the overthrow of a large and powerful empire that was in power for over six centuries?"

For Cortez, the answer was easy. It was all or nothing! A Complete and Total Commitment. Here's how Cortez got the "buy in" from the rest of his men. He took away the option of failure. It was conquer and be hero's and enjoy the spoils of victory...or DIE! When Cortez and his men arrived on the shores of the Yucatan he rallied the men for one final pep talk before leading his men into battle, and utters these three words that changed the course of history. "Burn the Ships".

He met with resistance from his men. "Burn the ships," he repeated. He then uttered these words "if we are going home, we are going home in their ships". With that, Cortez and his men burned their own ships, and by burning their own ships, the commitment level of the men was raised to a whole new level. A level much higher than any of the men, including Cortez, could have ever imagined.

Amazingly, the men conquered the Aztecs and had succeeded in something where others had been unsuccessful for six centuries. With the victory Cortez and his men took the treasure. Why did they win? They had no escape. No fall back position. They had no choice! It was "succeed or die". Their ships were burned. They had no way to get back. Their backs were to the wall.

To "really succeed" you must have an attitude much like that of Cortez and his men. Cortez and his men did not have a "crutch" or "fall back position". They frankly didn't have any options. It was simply "succeed or DIE". Pretty strong position, isn't it? How would you like to be engaged in fighting someone with that level of motivation and commitment?

This is the level of motivation and commitment you must have. The "BURN YOUR SHIP" level of motivation and commitment. Take away your crutches and excuses and burn the ships that are keeping you from achieving your goals. Identity the ships in your life that are keeping you from accomplishing dreams. I have a saying and it's "Dream Big". I have a new saying and it's "Burn your Ship". You see, whatever prevents you from achieving your goals and dreams are ships that must be burned. Not dismantled, or run ashore...but burned and destroyed.

If we know that our ships are still out there, when things get tough we instinctively head for our ships so we can escape. It's just human nature. The path of least resistance. This level of thinking and commitment sees sacrifice as a positive thing, not something weird or impossible, but something to be cherished and fought for. Cortez didn't allow himself or his men to have the option of going back to Spain. By removing this option, Cortez and his men were forced to focus on how they could make the mission successful. And so it is with you. How can you make the missions in your life successful?

This is really a story about commitment. Commitment is the foundation of success. Not a single accomplishment is ever achieved without it. By focusing on commitment, we seal our future.

And that is why as Ken as so eloquently put it: "An Immediate - Potentially Desperate - Financial Need" is what motivates us to succeed is so true.

I know for me - once i read "Think And Grow Rich" I decided to quit my job. As I lived off savings and slowly they began to fade my motivation grew, and grew and grew.... as did my success.

      So burn your ships....

I just started two weeks ago, mainly just tinkering with the idea of making money on the side with the little available time I had outside my normal job. I wanted to have some recurring spending money for my hobby, rc model aircraft.

Today, due to economic problems, my company had a layoff where my coworker, my boss, and his boss were all cut. Big reality check! I work in IT for a very big Semiconductor company. After these cuts, I am the highest person now at my facility. I may be next if economy doesn't get better!

Now, I am looking at devoting a WHOLE LOT MORE TIME into marketing. I can program anything web or non web based. What I am learning now is keyword research. I am an engineer and seeing that keyword research is not EXACT (no EXACT solution), is really frustrating for me right now, especially after what happened today. A clear mind is a must as you state in your number two. However, I believe my mind is more clear now than before when I was just tinkering. It is not just about myself now, I have my family to take care of. IM is my backup plan. I believe desperation causes one to take focusing on their objective much more seriously.

Everything I read here at WF says it is more than possible to succeed. Desperation causes you to change your thinking from "Will *I* also succeed?" to "*I* WILL SUCCEED!".

Desperation breeds emotion. Emotion breeds action. Action breeds change. Remove the desperation, and the difficulty is in creating sufficient emotion to bring about the action.
    My two cents.

The way I see it is you either get up off the mat and keep fighting or lay down and quit. You only really lose at this game when you stop playing.

I created a semi-successful e-commerce site about a year and half ago and got complacent. Now I'm kicking down new doors and literally trying something new everyday.

I just signed up for a mailing list and email blasted all my previous customers and it's already paying for itself. I mean...I seriously just started learning about the power of email marketing. I can't believe how I ever turned a profit w/o some of these techniques.

    Good post.

Very intersting post and equally interesting replies.

A long time ago I was in that very situation and your point number 2 was a real killer for me until I overcame it.

Desperation can so easily cloud an otherwise clear and logical brain into blind panic and sometimes, without help, support and advice from other people, that is almost too hard to turn around.

I was lucky in that I had a friend who taught me how to set small acheivable goals that quickly build into more significant goals without even realising it.

Sometimes that's all it takes, instead of focusing on the 'oh my god, how am I going to pay the mortgage next month', focus on 'I'm going to make enough this week to pay for my petrol next week' etc. etc.

    It worked for me anyway.

I agree with you. Sometimes people just don't want to get out of their comfort zone and take consistent action because they don't feel the need to.

Desperate need is a powerful thing, but I believe behind that desperate need you also require a certain toughness or the courage to tackle whatever problem you have front on.

Otherwise, desperate need would only lead to despair and tragedy.

Fascinating replies everyone. It's interesting how the emotions of desperation speak to people in different ways.

The key is to figure out how to manipulate those emotions to your favor - and the only way to do that is understand your own self, what your own patterns are (important), and ultimately motivates you to generate a result.

    Keep them coming.

      Great post!

      Here are my simple observations.

I think most people make desperate change when desperate change is the only thing they have left to do!

Desperation tends to trigger something in people's minds that finally convinces them that what they've been doing just doesn't work. They likely know this before desperation kicks in, but they're just too comfy to do anything about it. Desperation gives them no choice.

When desperation sets in, people tend to throw off all distractions in their lives that were slowing them down all along. As a result, they get clearer on what needs done, and they focus on making it happen.

This clarity is like a cleansing process that can transform a persons life.

Desperation can be the kick in the butt we need. As long as we do not go overboard and compromise our values or dreams to get to a spot where we are no longer desperate. Using a negative emotion to spur the positive actions we need to succeed is a useful tool but can often be used without thought or consequence.

I think people are too comfortable with their current situation and when obstacles and challenges face they aren't will to go the extra mile.

Why does 5% or less of the World's Population own 95% of the Worlds Wealth??

    Are they smarter?
    Do they work longer hours?

Why is it that these people have it figured out?

Throughout my study of the Uber successful I have come to find that their are several key components to the success of the Super Wealthy.

I highly suggest you read Think & Grow Rich if you have not already...maybe even read it again.

Remember, in the book her recommended that you come back and read each chapter from time to time. I suggest that you stick with 1 chapter for an entire month. Yes, that's about 30 times reading 1 chapter.

Can you imagine what you will come away with when you read each chapter that many times.

    Success is a Science.

I think that is the main reason why I have not push myself all the way to success. It feels comfortable in my own comfort zone that I might not want to venture out.

Even if I venture out, I will do it for a while and then come back to my comfort zone.

How can we actually have that desperate mindset even though we are not in a desperate situation?

Great questions and observations. If you review the biographies of successful people you will see a recurring theme of overcoming adversity (and bankruptcy before finally breaking free seems to be very common for some of today's new multi-millionaires).

A key factor in the results you will achieve when faced with a desperate situation is attitude. Are you a victim or a victor? Victims will blame everyone but themselves for the situation they find themselves in and will not take action to change. Victors will look within to understand why they are in a situation and will take action and learn from their mistakes to make a difference in their futures.

Right thinking will get you right results.

You've hit the nail on the head.

I am probably in the same situation as a lot of people here. Full-time employment, earning a VERY good living by working for someone else, expensive company car, health insurance, benefits...

My younger brother was made redundant from his job a few years ago. Instead of looking for another 'job', he took the redundancy money, set himself up as a company (doing what he'd been doing in a consultancy role) and he hasn't looked back since. In fact his first contract was back at the place he'd been made redundant from, but now they were paying him 4 times more!

Personally if my job gets made redundant (and who knows given the current economic climate), that would be the catalyst for me to try something different, to make that change.

Working for someone else is a TRAP!

They hook you in with the regular money, the nice cars, free cell phone, etc.. etc... They know they've got you by the balls. Most people are also constrained by huge loans, mortgage, responsibility. Everyone sucks up to the guys at the top through fear of losing their jobs. All this brings is office politics and people talking in this wierd "office speak" ('Businesseeze'?) thinking it makes them sound more important than they really are...

Has anyone who works in an office ever played B.S. Bingo in a meeting? Give it a go.

Imagine how the dynamics of office life would change if suddenly the threat of losing your job (or the need for money) was removed! It would be liberating! Out go the ridiculous processes and procedures which make no sense, but we use them because "we've always done it like that" or just because the man in the corner decided they were great 15 years ago.

Another blocker is that IM, like it or not, is NOT SEEN AS A "PROPER JOB" by other people.

Most regular people do not know other people making a comfortable living off this. It is not a 'tangible', in the sense that being a plumber or an electrician or having a shop with physical products to sell. Thus it makes it difficult to pursue something which your husband/wife/family do not fully understand.

Last week I threw down a gauntlet to myself (well, didn't have any gauntlets but it's getting chilly over here in the UK now, so fortunately had a woolly glove close by), that I would write a report to post as a WSO. My first WSO!

Hell - other people are doing it so why can't I? No reason. I can put something together, which for $7 of people's money will give them a lot of value. I've already started drafting my first chapter and aim to get it out for the New Year.

This has been my longest post to date, so thank you if you've taken the time to read it. My early New Years resolution is to be more active in this forum, because I know a lot of the knowledge I have accumulated in my day job is transferable to IM.

When times are good there is no need to change, you know the old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it.

We are inherently lazy beings and creatures of habit and like death and taxes there will always be ambitious people who want to better themselves despite their circumstances, those people will always take action, and then there are the people that simply don't.

    Nice post.

I got started in IM back in '98 because as a student then, I couldn't get a job where I lived. So, I needed money for food, rent etc and IM helped get some cash at least to tide me over every now and again.

    Then, it became an addiction.

    Then, a career option.

    Then an obsession.

Then the only option. Meaning I won't even consider anything else now.

And I'm loving it money or no money. I think they call that a passion.

This is a great thread guys...

I agree with all of you, desperation is a key ingredient... even though is hard to think when we are desperate, it can become exactly what we need to get ahead. I have personally known quite a few people who, out of desperation, have become very successful.

When we are 'comfortable' we don't want to make any changes because everything is going well; but as some of you have said, circumstances can change any moment and sometimes that is when the 'leader' in us comes out and helps us get ahead.

    Hi guys,

Nice post. But the problem for me is how do I create a desperate emotion? I mean I don't know how to force something like that upon myself...

I'm a starter, but I am willing to try everything I can to be a successful internet marketer and chase my dreams. If you can answer any of my questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

    Ken,

That is so true, when you are desperate, you will do anything to make yourself better.

I know it would happen to me if I kicked my current job to the curb and had no income coming in. I think that is what stops most people from having success. They are comfortable with what they earn.

They don't try to do IM or start a business because it requires to much hard work. It is just easier to work for the money.

    Hi guys,

You know when people get up in the morning to go to work? They invest in a lot of things throughout the month in oder to do their jobs such as fuel, transportation, food, clothings, etc. And they do all this because they know their investments will pay off come month-end...PAYCHECKS! And throughout this process, they behave comfortably because they know the money is going to coming in. I believe IM'ers need to have this kind of mindset too..that if they invest in the right things, their efforts will pay off. Easier said than done because unlike full-time employees, we deal with the unknown. Still, this is the psychology of belief.

      Thanks for this thread Ken,
I've been following you for quite some time.
I deliberately made a decision on September 17th 2008, to quit my dismal dead end job in the aerospace industry to reach out for the goal of doing what I love to do. Be on the internet. My goal is to develop an internet based business.

This is how you go about creating a desperate situation for yourself.
This is my saga in work.

I have spent most of my life bowing to the concept I was taught as a child "get a good job, work hard, be loyal to your company and save for retirement"

      THE PROBLEM:

      Get a good job:
I have had so many "Good Jobs" in my life, that if I were to try and tell anyone how many things I have done in my life, NO ONE would believe me. Seriously, no one would believe me. I have had jobs that lasted 15 years and jobs that lasted a few months. Maybe back in the '40s and '50s that notion was working, but not in today's world. I have advanced skills in many fields but this too has not led to getting that "Good Job". Just look around you at the people that have a "Good Job" and you will, more likely than not, have a hard time finding anyone that can make that claim. Unless, they are doing what they love to do. But then, those people really don't consider what they do as a "job".
      Work hard:
I started working full time when I was 12 years old. I worked 16hr days 7 days a week 365 days a year except when I was in school when I only worked 12hr days during the week but then back to 16hr days on weekends. You see, my family had a large ranching/farming operation (40k acres) that required my help. I was the only son. It wasn't until I was in my early 20s when I moved away that I got my first 8hr a day job. I had never had a "Vacation". I soon started my own business in my new location and my working hours returned to at least 16hr days. That went on for 7 more years. Events outside of my control took place that caused most all businesses in my occupation (construction related) to cease to exist (Building Moratorium). I started another business that required me to have to travel endlessly until I finally got burned out of traveling. Another 3 years of 14-16hr days. No vacations no time off. I finally settled down in my current location and spent the next 20+ years working in the manufacturing industry for someone else. Typically working 10-16hr days. But! I did manage to sneak in a couple of vacations here and there. I KNOW what hard work IS. Hark work only kept the bills paid and set aside a small savings. You can work as hard as you please, but if your not working smart, all your hard work will not make you wealthy.
      Be Loyal:
I have been loyal to a fault with every occupation and job I have ever had. Here's what it got me. I had never been terminated from a job in all my life until my 13 year career with a major aerospace manufacturer abruptly ended in 2000 because my immediate corporate manager was unable to figure out the ROI for the job I was recruited by this manager to do. I had been doing this particular job for several other corporate managers for 4 years without a problem. As a matter of fact, I received the highest awards of recognition that was attainable in this company. Prompting invites from many corporate executives for various Commendations and Achievement ceremonies. that all came crashing down at the height of my career. I came to work one day and was told that I was no longer needed. It was crushing. I spent the next 8 years getting canned from every company I went to work for. Despite my endless work and dedication contributions. Each job would last almost one year exactly. What I would eventually come to understand is that I was brought into these companies to compete for the vary position I was hired for. The competition was based on how well I fit into their "Good 'Ol Boys" club. Not on what one could bring to the corporate table to ensure healthy corporate profits. The winner in each of these cases would play golf, attend sporting events and "suck-up" the upper management to gain favor despite the fact that they had no real leadership, management or skill sets that would make them a valuable asset to the company. Loyalty is a good thing but won't save you in the end. Not to say that you should ever be dis-loyal.
      Save for retirement:
The funny thing about saving is that most people rarely have enough money to make ends meet due the fact that as their income rises, so does the level of their standard of living. That's not a bad thing to a point. There does come a time when you need to evaluate whether your standard of living is based on what everyone else around you has and when you really have enough "Things". There's a growing trend for people to trying to live "debt free". The term "debt free" is really not achievable unless you unless you drop out of society, find a cave (on someone else's property, you know taxes and all) and find a way to live off the land. Otherwise, the closest you can get is to debt free is to stop creating debt and concentrate on eliminating all the outstanding debt you have. When you are at the point you have eliminated most of your debt, you are now in the position to start setting aside money that can be invested for future growth.
With the recent economic crisis many who have relied on those pension and retirement plans to be able to carry them through their retirement years have seen those plans be virtually wiped-out with little hope of rebuilding them in time and in sufficient quantity to avert having to stay in the workforce for many more years. I decided many years ago to live within my means, use credit as a last resort, save religiously, and avoid creating debt. Could I retire today? No. But I have a cushion of finance that has led me to my point.
The only way to be successful is to do the thing you love, do it with all your heart and never give up. Success isn't always measured by the financial return but by the satisfaction you attain from helping others.
"You can have everything in life that you want if you just give enough other people what they want." Zig Ziglar
An Immediate - Potentially Desperate - Financial Need
Back in September after only seven months, I had had enough of being stressed-out, over worked and under paid that I created a situation where there's no turning back. The bridges have been burnt and the only options are success or failure. I have many skills and NOW all the time my bank account will allow me, to make it happen. And since my savings are regarded as "they do not exist for the purpose of dependency" "DO NOT TOUCH" I am throwing myself entirely at IM. Failure is not a option.

I will post back to this thread as I reach my goals. At this point I have no income, haven't made a dime with IM (yet) and surrounded by nay-sayers.

Here's what I have on my side. I have a legal business entity (licensed and everything), the WF is my support organization, I have many skills and software assets, time and most important, the desire to succeed.

Ken, you've started a really interesting thread here.

I agree that desperation is often what brings out the best in us.

A few years ago I had to find another job very quickly. In the legal market I'm in it can easily take 6 months to find the right job. But I was desperate to move and managed to find the perfect job and accepted it within 6 weeks. Desperation made me do things much faster and with more passion than I otherwise would have.

I'm currently not remotely desperate financially and am quite comfortable in my job. And that's the problem because I also want to give it up to spend more time with my family and pursue other interests like...my internet business for example! So I don't spend enough time or passion on my business ideas because of that. Now I know that I would if I was faced with no other choice.

If you can find a way of making me desperate, without actually making me desperate, I'm in!

    Hi Ken,

I've thought a lot about this over the years
and in fact a buddy of mine and I were just
talking about this on the phone 2 days ago.

It's amazing what you can accomplish when
you go all-out with your back against the
    wall.

It's what got me into marketing full-time,
    actually.

I was about to lose my apartment, car, had
$30K in debt, and whooooosh... 30 days later
had an opt-in list that went from zero to 30K
and a launch that generated one million dollars
in a day (in sales, not profit).

I had always wondered if there was a way to
tap into that force at will...

    ... a magic pill?

If anyone has some, I'd be happy to spend
    $1K a pill!

      LOved this thread....................so interesting.

What I have learned from this is that I need to get desperate, I do agree thats when things get moving. Its as if suddenly you are prepared to jump out of your comfort zone and take the action that is needed.

I spose one way of achieving this would be to "pretend" that you are desperate. For instance ask yourself, what action would I take in my business if I was about to be homeless tomorrow???

Maybe now if we apply this technique we can all be a huge success!
