twitter question (can't get my head around)...

from a current promo video (part of a major launch)...

"Find out who's big on twitter in your niche, then follow the people who are following them, then tweet relevant stuff (a lot) -- then they (a certain %) will follow you..."

HUH?!?

The internet (+ twitter) is pretty much founded on this notion: *I* (the user) get to determine who I contact -- and NOT the other way around. In other words, PRIVACY.

So, twitter is set up (with a similar philosophy) so that *I* can follow whomever I want (listen to them -- eavesdrop on them, basically) But it is (intentionally) a ONE-WAY "peephole."

*I* get to maintain my privacy (+ annonimity).

So, I understand the first part of that quote from the promo video -- but I do not get the logic behind the last part: "then they (a certain %) will follow you..."

Really?!? -- Says who?

Let's break this situation down, one aspect at a time...

Niche guru, "Mr. X" has (say) 900 followers on twitter.

Ok, now let's hold it right there + clarify exactly what that means...

Mr. X is DISEMINATING info (SENDING tweets). The 900 "followers" are RECEIVING that info. That is the ONE-WAY "peephole." Mr. X is SENDING 100% of the info in question. He is RECEIVING *ZERO%*. Conversely, the 900 sheeple -- err, I mean "followers" are 100% RECEIVING said info, and ZERO % SENDING the info.

Ok, now let's continue...

If niche Guru "Mr. X" has 900 followers, then I FOLLOW (listen to) all of his/her 900 followers, why should I pay any attention to what Mr. X's FOLLOWERS are tweeting (if they are even tweeting at all) -- and even more trivially,

why would those followers even know or CARE that *I* am following them,

how would they even know what *I* am tweeting (since I am listening to them, and NOT the other way around)

what motivation would they have to "follow me back" (listen to me), if they don't even know who I am, or what I am even tweeting in the first place?!?

Analogy:

"How to sell more books"...

Step 1 -- find a bestselling author -- let's call him Mr. X.

Step 2 -- get a list of the people who bought Mr. X's books

Step 3 -- buy the books written by the people who bought Mr. X's books (if any!)

Step 4 -- hope that, by buying the books written by the people who bought Mr. X's books, those people will somehow want to buy the book(s) YOU have written.

HUH?!?

Please advise.

Thanks!

    The analogy is wrong...

Most of those teachings you quoted at the beginning of your post are based on the fact that many twitter-users set their account to automatically follow back all their followers.

Which means, you start following the 900 followers of X... and "they (a certain %)" will follow you.

Yeah, Tim, you're overthinking this. I'll bet you didn't just go do it, did you? Try the advice before you agonize over understanding it. Once you see it in action, it'll get a lot clearer.

    Cheers,

Hi Tim, I just got started with Twitter myself! What Istvan and Charles are saying is right on the mark. Many times if you follow someone, they follow you back, often automatically! And when you get a new follower you get an email letting you know. When I get those I usually take a peek at my new follower's account and generally follow them back, as long as their content looks relevant. Just do it, you'll see!
